I review a new solo deckbuilding legacy game from Fryxgames. I was sent a copy of the game for free but had no other affiliation or agreement with Fryxgames. TLDW; it's fun and cozy to play, cheap, but lacks an ultimate objective (which is maybe okay) and I think you should try it!

Board Game Strategy: Statistics in GWT and Arnak
I have now played this class for 11 scenarios and am level 6 in a 4 player ( melee heavy) party. Its been nothing but pure misery up to level 5. My lifegoal forces me to get perk ✔️ so I often have to play awkwardly on a class that is anything but flexible to begin with. I fail to see what this class does that Kelp doesnt do equally well as a Damage Dealer with much less prerequisites. I have read all the guides for it, almost every recommended item and understand the mechanics by now. It still feels VERY mid at best. I watch my buddy in the oh so maligned Bannerspear (lv7) do a formation attack with upwards of 12 total damage with selfheal of 1 and shield 1 and am left wondering....whats my purpose again? To enable other people to have a good time with spamming brittle while I loot everything with my lv 4 card? It becomes especially tragic when the Meteor just trashes shielded mobs while I wail away helplessly at them or I have to beg for heals because the self heal potential is pitiful if you dont go tank route. This class has all the "magical Christmas land" trappings where it could be great but never is because your elements get sniped, you need a ton of items, mutually exclusive upgrade cards, certain mobs to not be in the scenario, etc. Maybe its me but beyond reading guides, trying different hand setups and hoping that the last two games with the class having reached 6 where its at least tolerable I don't know more to do .
@sphyre1196 honestly, for pure power, I agree kelp and bannerspear are just better. Personally, the fun of this is the challenge of the element manipulation but I agree it's not the class to play for pure power
Allan here. I was fortunate to jump into a big lead early, and I knew Raul was remotely close (was around 15+ points ahead of Angela and JC), so I devoted all energy in denying Raul pharaoh tie/win
The spreadsheet tracking made watching this so much better, especially if you don't watch it all in one sitting. This was a really interesting one to watch since Phil did the thing I thought you want to avoid at all costs (run out of money). Good one to watch for learning the game.
@@Mundungu the wsbg folks liked it so much that they copied my idea in their commentary!

I really like this game IRL. I´ve got to try this version. Have you seen Ark Nova coming to Steam soon BTW, Nick?
@@jankogo I had not heard that! I wonder how it will be different from the BGA version. Thanks for sharing
@@phoenicksgaming designwise it looks a little bit different and you can play against various A.I.
Amazing play through! Very entertaining to watch you play games. Please do more of these the future!
@@surugaya-o3f thanks for watching! I definitely will do more :)
One thing that i missed in Frosthaven is how well some classes synergize with some others, compared to Gloomhaven. F. e. run a negative conditions build, and the "Crab" guy does his Bane one. Have those Steel Automatons drop like flies. Or the Drill ability card that makes a certain mastery possible (and comes with a huge con) doesn't seem so bad. And you become an absolute menace in the process, provided you're careful on your own. So, Pain Conduit is indeed as close to being overpowered as you can get.
@@ΓιαννηςΜαγκανιαρης agreed! And the geminate with putting negative effects on itself
I am seriously thinking of getting this game. I have a lot of other Wallace games and he in the top as designers go for me. Nice to see some high level play.
@jankogo if you love Wallace then I think this is a very wise pickup
If your agent goes to a battle square and you don't deploy troops, but you have cards with battle point effects, do you still take part in the battle via the cards? Or must you always have deployed troops in order to participate in the battle?
@@nickmotion you need at least one troop in the conflict to participate
Thanks for the insights Nick. It was very interesting to see how top players play a game with a very wide appeal in terms of gamer abilities, definitely some tips I've picked up that will enable me to crush Grandma at this next Sunday :)
@@chrisfoot2007 hahhaa, fear me, grandma!

Wow I was not expecting cards 1. I never flip cards 1, it’s usually my last upgrade if I upgrade it. And I think I have the top 20 players stats on my side here.
@Woodflooralchemist yeah this video is pretty old and experience levels have changed drastically. Pre BGA world.
This must be the hardest Class to learn and play. Blink and Geminate is also 5 complexity, but feel easier to grasp. I like the other robot more than hive.
@@Eric-f4b this is definitely a 5+
More cat cameos please!
This was helpful. Thanks!
@@corey3145 glad you enjoyed!
1:21:00 why doesnt he play the city next to the lake and opposite his other city northeast of the board? Creates 2 great spots for greeneries, gets 2M back and 1 steel. Btw, really impressed with how Anthony played it, but Levi's brute force way just barely won it.
I suspect for the immediate plant bonus? Tough to say tho
I've made my own character that's hungry for elements like this. I call him the Quatryl Meteorologist. He brings two new Elements on the board: Lightning and water. And he has an own mechanic called forecast. Those are skills you need to use Elements to bring them into the active area and in three Rounds the effect triggers anywhere on the map. There are also skills that bring the marker on an active Forcast ability forward, so that it triggers earlier.
@@markusjagering7449 that sounds really fun! Do you have it posted.online somewhere?
@phoenicksgaming No. I'm still working on it.
Can't believe no one picked up the arrow head artefact at round 3
@@QuickUnit it's v v good
I think this is the weakest class in comparison to anything I've ever played in all Gloomhaven/Frosthaven, jotl, forgoten circles, and trail of ashes. The amount of effort you need to put in into this class in order to do very mediocre things in unreal :D I've had less troubles playing FH starter class Geminate with the amount of thinking that needs to happen in order to do basic things. When played on higher levels, there is no way either of your pets is surviving an attack from mobs so in order for you to swap back and heal that damaged summon. Even if they had 10+hp each, it would still be super underwhelming. Level 8 card being attack 3 wound in a 3 hex cone is criminal :D (for refference Brute has attack 3 in 3 cone on level 1)
@petarvesovic7253 yeah if there was a place to try out scaling minions, this was it
Hi Nick, Congratulations for winning the Ring Games of Lost Ruins of Arnak and Earth at the 2024 WSBG! I am a fan, watching your channel from the other side of the globe. I am a board game coach in Singapore and I found your commentaries very helpful for in-depth understanding of the selected WSBG games. You are doing a great service to the board gaming community through the analysis that you are providing. You are an inspiration to the students that I show your commentaries to. I hope to meet you one day in person at the WSBG or major board game conventions.
@IBGA191 wow what a cool gig! Tha KS for dropping a comment, I'm glad the videos are being seen worldwide :) definitely look forward to saying hello someday
All these hour long guides and no ones gives a good example of the first two or three turns. I play this class and find it way to slow in a 4 player game. By the time you have enough shadows to do anything the room will be cleared and most of the shadows will be left behind. Gaining XP is also hard and very dark and shadow dependant. Looking forward to retiring this class.
I got this game last year after watching your commentary and got to play 10 or so times. I feel like the first round of this particular game happens decently often that seeing how newer players who are good board gamers react to the shock of a quick round was really interesting.
@brainofjikir agreed! The tempo can really take you by surprise and I think the disciplined players know how to pull the trigger early because of it
@@phoenicksgaming In addition to that, they started playing really fast in the later rounds because of that experience right away, when really the rounds are likely to run even longer since the density of RA tiles in the bag is now lower than the game started with
Hi, Nick. Raul here. Great to hear you commenting on our game. Yeah, none of us had a lot of Ra experience. It was fun playing. Alan did a great job, very consistent in all rounds. I tried to catch up on monument scoring in the end, but not enough. Hope to see you all next year again and have fun again. Let's RA!
@raulcadena2911 congratulations on getting to the semifinals! Super exciting. Sounds like you quite like the game so if you're anything like me you'll be a pro at Ra this time next year ;)
@@phoenicksgaming :) ....will try, will try...
Well done in TTR! Fun games and see you around!
Ra is a wonderful game!
@@jankogo it's been reprinted this many times for good reason!
Maybe Plague Protocol top could have been awesome, if the downside of its mode was "Heals targeting you are reduced by 1 Heal".
45:53 One thing players may not appreciate when evaluating Wracked with Pain is that you can opt to ignore the Wound and *only apply the Stun and Brittle conditions* to avoid the Brittle being wasted on a tick of Wound damage rather than a bigger attack. This makes it a reliable control card that also contributes significant damage provided you meet the health requirement.
@@cryosynthe very clever! It takes discipline to give fewer conditions but that's a great call
44:07 Replace one "+0" card with one "+0 invisible self" card - you can decline to apply the invisibility condition to yourself if you draw this card it at an inopportune time when it would be helpful to tank for the party. It's a broadly applicable rule that you don't have to apply any *non mandatory* conditions from abilities or attack modifier cards to enemies just because they appear on the ability card or attack modifiers you draw. Usually it's a benefit to do so but there are niche cases where it may not be.
@@cryosynthe oooo very good point
28:15 Minor rules correction: The first attack on Tumultuous Panic has a square enhancement pip so you can only enhance it with a +1 sticker, not a poison condition. You can add poison to the second attack though. This is similar to the Geminate card Changeling's Boon. The balance team did this so you can't benefit from the poison damage on the second attack immediately - otherwise poison would be a no-brainer here.
@@cryosynthe thanks for the call out!
The Doldrums of Insanity!
Yes, he should have taken Kwisatz Haderach out of the game.
Same problem with summons again, Isaac. Cant play them at higher levels. We play +1 and +2 and one hit and those summons are wiped. Loss card waste. Bad design. Just up the health of these things.
@@ShaneChristianC summon scaling would be nice
My wife keeps beating me at Arnak so I'm hoping you can help me. Love hearing your thoughts on here and the Friendly Ties podcast. Thanks for making these videos and congrats on your WSBG wins.
@MrJonnyalpha thank you! And yes I have a few arnak videos on here and a grand strategy guide planned for later this year
Definitely NOT a fan of this one...
Since the video does not provide any evidance or statistical data: "My preferred card flipping order" would be a better title, also Upgrading Cards by itself is not a strategy but inevitable embedded part of gameplay, when talking about certain cards changing the prefered order of flipping, that is commonly referred to as tactics, not strategy. Opportunity cost is a missing concept, to get any idea, why flipping certain cards before other is good or not (e.g whats is the average cost in actions and money to play out an animal vs just buying conservation points from the upgraded asociation card?). There should be enough empirical data, what cards highest ranked players flip first on boardgamearena to get a better picture of what works best and it would say a lot more, since the numer of games one can play is quite limited in comparision to that.
@dieterh23 when I made this video i don't think ark nova had been on BGA for very long at all, so empirical evidence was hard to come by. I've also changed my opinions a bit since then but keep this video up as it still generates a good dialogue for folks. Thanks for watching!
@@phoenicksgaming Actually your rankings seem fit quite well to to bga stats of top 20 players presented in another video meanwhile ;-) As Matthias Wigge said, Ark Nova is an efficiency puzzle. That goes very well with what I saw in the data of BGA top players, not reveiling too much predominant strategies.
Hey Nick, love your videos! One tip for future WSBG commentary videos, may you have the video you're watching be at a higher quality before recording? Not sure if its a video capture issue but would definitely make your future videos easier to watch and enjoy!
@AjayDjayLOL totally hear you and I agree it isn't the sharpest. I'll double check that it isn't a download issue but I think this is an issue with the original sourcing of the footage? Appreciate you calling that out and I'll look into other download options if indeed that is the core problem
That was very interesting, thank you for doing this video! And congratulations!

@reneterriet7478 thanks! Yes keep your eye out - I'm hoping to get to it in the next few months
Congrats Nick! Glad you brought a token back from Vegas if this does end up being your last
@chrisfoot2007 given the double rings I do get a subsidized return so I'll have to give it another go next year. Hurrah :)
you had an opportunity being second one to the temple to get an extra 11 points, that would have given you at least five more points then the artifacts that you purchased.
@@torgeirrobertson6615 at which point are you referring to? I'd love to look and see the situation!
Congrats, do you feel like Antoine made a mistake not getting an assistant round 1 to block you?
@laneledge if he grabbed an assistant by going gem and I've have been able to get coins and place my second assistant (which was the original plan). My game may have been horse/airplane pass, which I think would have been pretty cool and guaranteed a site 2 explore. So I don't think it was a mistake from my games perspective. The real question is if it was a mistake for him. I think if I were in his shoes i would have gone for the t1 assistant but it's marginal and close so I didn't think I'd call it a mistake one way or the other
Congrats on the double ring win! It's so impressive that you've won four rings in four different games. Hope you can win two more rings in yet another two new games next year haha!
Love this kind of content! All the GWT strategy I know, I learned from your other videos haha. It’s so cool hearing about how dynamic some of the games were. Game 2 sounded particularly interesting, just wondering, how important do you think getting that early taxer down was in contributing to your victory? Or would you say that the variance (e.g. Jonathan’s bad draws, your great draws) was a bigger factor?
@MostVictoryPoints in most games I would say the taxer is more important but this game was so abundant with cash early on that the tempo of the good/bad draws played a more significant factor than it normally would
Congrats on the great run! Really liked these v-logs. Looking forward to more content and hope you'll do more live playthroughs on BGA!
@v0inier thank you and I'm glad you liked these! I got a good suggestion about where to check out how a professional does this at poker events so something to look into
Nick, awesome job! Really pleased to hear you had such a good time, and all the positive encouragement you got to keep putting out great content. It’s probably easy to forget that a few hundred views on a 1-hour board game video is equivalent to a humongous room full of passionate board game fans each spending an hour in your virtual company. Keep that ball rolling! It’s been fun following your progress this week. What a run. GG!
@@Nialltube2 the math of youtube is indeed pretty staggering!
Thanks Nick for covering several super important topics! I especially enjoyed the stories, and appreciated that you shared a time when you wished you were a better sport. I just got back home from WSBG, and to keep this shorter I’ll only share my perspective on luck. Post-WSBG I’ve changed my mind about the relationship between skill and luck. Coming into WSBG with a “decent” ELO of 350-450 ELO in Wingspan, Ark Nova and Azul, I thought I had a small, but not tiny chance of winning a ring. But experiencing how many high skill players attend WSBG, I now believe my chances were far far lower than I’d imagined! I even told people leading up to the event, “I have an ok shot because luck is such a big factor in board games”. But for my situation, I believe skill was far more significant than luck. And this is clear from your examples: a 0.3% chance is worlds apart from a 13% chance! I’m not saying luck isn’t a big factor, I just think that skill is a much bigger factor for most players, like myself. But when you’re right up there skill-wise with the best, the role of luck grows. Btw I’m Dennis, I only got a super brief chance to say hi to you in the Ring games area on I think Day 1!
