Burnouts and Launches From the 2023 Wally Parks Nostalgia Nationals
He'll Yes that what I like to see all that more Nitro in those earlier model Dragsters and zDon Garlits .. thats it the Fire..
I grew up just down the road from them, and remember my much older brother driving his '56 chevy with a 396 / 4-speed over to have Jim 'tune it's for him. That's was @'66 or so. I went along - I was 6-7 years old and saw their TF dragster sitting in the driveway 😮. That area was very rural then, but the quiet country life, on occasion, would be greatly disturbed by said Top Fuel dragster warming up, blinking the throttle. You cannot imagine how loud that thing was, to hear it like thunder only 1/2 mile away😊. It cemented my disease. Later in life, I had the privilege of working on her daily driver. They are wonderful people😊
Legend!
I was fortunate enough to see Don run several times at the local strip before the greedy developers took it away from us. Glad he's still able to play with his toys. 👍
A teenager from the 60’s am I. Don Garlits was my hero. Never missed a Hot Rod magazine. Went straight to any article on Don Garlits! Thank you Mr Garlits for all the enjoyment you gave me 🙏🏻
Garlits is still looking good!!!! Age, never get old!!!!!
So nice to see 'Big Daddy Garlits' still at it! I grew up in the 60's and we used to call my dad 'Big Daddy' because of him. The *other* Big Daddy was Ed Roth, and this always confused me 'cause Garlits has Rat Fink on his car, so for anyone who was confused as I was, here's the low down as best as I could find: "Millions of Ed Roth's model cars were sold, for which he received one cent royalty for each one, and a corporate publicist gave their 6ft 4in tall inventor the nickname Big Daddy, which he loved. He first became known in 1958 with a car he called the Beatnik Bandit, followed, a year later, by a hot-rod, the Outlaw. Don Garlets Big Daddy came around 1962 Though not the beginning of his story, He was Already married with two daughters, other drivers jokingly referred to him as “Daddy” Don Garlits at the racetrack. Playful joke turned to long-lasting endearment the later referred to him as “Big Daddy” because of all the wins, setting numerous speed records. Both shared the same moniker for different reasons, Ed Roth for his stature at 6' 4" & Don Garlet's for being a father & older than most of the drivers. Roth & Garlets are both giant's in their fields"
Hello Big Daddy "Don GARLITS"...... JP here..., I use to Stage Vehicles to Race at Oxford Plains Drag Way in Oxford, Maine back in the mid 70's....! =) Say Hi to the gang for me.....! Shirley Muldowney too....!!
What a legend I grew up on, Big Daddy, which got me interested in drag racing. I hope we can see John Force one day doing the same.
I went to SIR in the 80s everyone else had these huge semi setups. Gartlits was just a small trailer and he had his hands deep in the block rebuilding it for another pass himself.
A real living Legend
Big Daddy in a SlingShot Dragster! Fricking Awesome!😎👍🙏back in the day, if those exploded, it was like stepping on an IED! YOU WERE TOAST!🙆♂️🙏
Simply awesome car with a great drag racer at the wheel.
He is a total bad ass! I love when they go from alcohol to nitro!
Looking good BIG Daddy
Don was the frist racer to break 200 mph in a quarter mile
I watch Don race years ago when he was in tucson what a guy down to earth when I was there and talking to him
Interestingly it seems that there's only ONE sparkplug per cylinder.
It’s a beautiful thing folks!! 👍🇺🇸
Gghh🎉
For a moment I thought he was going to do one last burn out..
🇺🇸Legend .
Big Daddy Don Garlits!!! The greatest name in drag racing!!
I got his autograph at the 1979 Fall National's at SIR Seattle Wa.
BigDaddy Blasted it!!!😂
You have to love that cackle!
He was the last of the hands-on drag racers who were involved with every aspect of their car
I had one of those in a 17' flat bottomed drag boat. The motor was heavier than the boat. Probably a 9 second boat. It would rock the trailer in a rather threatening manner.
THAT'S MUSIC TO MY EARS
Gator Nationals late 60's big fan of BIG DADDY!!!!
We visited his museum several years ago. It was just past Thanksgiving so they had some Christmas items in the gift shop. We bought some things and were checking out. When I looked up Big Daddy himself was bagging up our stuff. I was in disbelief. I turned to my wife and asked if she knew who this was. He reached across and shook her hand introducing himself. He simply said “Hello Ma’am, I’m Don Garlits”. Always a legend and considering his success and contributions to drag racing, the greatest of all time…ever.
what a go Garlit,,, Don,,, i remember reading a book on Don back in the 50s or early 60s he blew the engine on his race car,, just a regular v8,, so guess what he did ya,, his station wagon had a v8 hemi in it ,,he pulled it out ran and won the race ever since he used hemi s yes
Don vs Tom back in the day was a thing of greatness.
Brings back memories 😅
Runs great. 🎉
Legend 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Big Daddy Don Garlits will always be the Number One driver and race car building of the world to me.
I was only 10 & 11, but my Uncle and I took a cooler and drove four hours to the Indy Nationals in 64 & 65. We slept in the car so we could afford the pit passes. Big Daddy Don Garlits and the Swamp Rat were there both times. So was Grumpy Jenkins, Jungle Jim, The Ram Chargers, Little Red Wagon and Linda Vahn The Golden Girl. What great, tiring and satisfying weekends those were. Now I’m bald and look like him. Haha
Still waiting for the golf cart burnout.
That thing sounds wickedly menacing.
Wow look at that beast race cars have come a long way. But you got to Respect anyone driver racing Back then much Respect
Don was the best of all time in Drag racing with the swamp rat with the baddest Hemi around
92 years old, January 14, 1932
Man this make me feel good :)
392 CID 1 zillion HP.
I am honored to say that I have met him and watched him race. They don't call him "BIG DADDY" for nothing. A true legend.
Could have givin us at least one old fashion burn out ! Geeesh don !😂❤
A True Legend......So good to hear his health is better....
I would Imagine even In 90s the reason He did Not take It out for a run because He only runs rear engine dragsters
The one and only.
One of the greatest ever! I was lucky enough to meet him a few years ago and he was just like talking to one of your best friends! Great Man!!!!!
