Cascade Tunnel Dedication Radio Program (Jan. 12, 1929)
On January 12, 1929, Great Northern Railway opened the nearly 8-mile Cascade tunnel, the longest tunnel in the Western hemisphere at that time, after 3 years of construction, for public travel in the state of Washington. NBC radio, with 36 participating stations, carried a dedication program on the air to commemorate the event live, with host Philips Carlin at the studio in New York and emcee Graham McNamee on location at the tunnel. Guests on the program included Great Northern president Ralph Budd, President-elect Herbet Hoover, and musical guests George Olsen and His Music and contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heink. The musical guests were there to entertain radio listeners during the about 40-mintue inaugural 8-mile journey of the Oriental Limited train thru the tunnel, with Graham McNamee describing his ride when completed. The program finished with a promo for NBC's new drama radio series, "Empire Builders", featuring the Oriental Limited train as it's setting for storytelling, and named for Great Northern's founder, James J. Hill.
Disclaimer: The original live dedication program ran into overtime at 67 minutes. For the purpose of this trimmed video, I have edited the contents down to a more accessible 14+ minutes, with guest speeches shortened. Also, the guest musical selections used to fill time on the original broadcast had to be removed due to UA-cam copyright issues.

This item was listed on a January 1895 list of Gramophone ‘plates' as being "Very Dramatic", and is a goo...

Absolutely riveting in its own way. Sometimes even old news can be compelling. I would love to hear the full-length version if it became available anywhere.

I had an old camera....worked too! You had to stand still for EVER if you wanted a good pic. We donated it to our state museum.
If you were born that year, you will be eligible for army draft in WW1 (24), talk about parents good timing tho
6:46 today is Tuesday July 30th 2024 and I just heard a dead man from Thursday May 17th 1860 (164 years, 2 months, 14 days ago ) singing to me ... Words cannot comprehend this, it's like time travel isn't some scientific theory or fantasy but exactly what I just did
Depending on how old these people were, some of them may have known people who were around in 1776. I also like the fact that it is recorded from the perspective of an onlooker, even though its a studio recording. Hope you have more rare/unusual recordings.
This is amazing. I don't think I've heard any recordings this long from this era.
my god it's like coming back home. ever since i was a child i felt a deep longing for everything concerning the 19th century or more precisely not to sound pretentious, the long 19th century (1780s to 1913) like if there such a thing as a past life i feel i would've been some music critic or something back in that era somewhere. I know it's kinda weird but i needed to let it of my chest and you're channel feels like a safe space to talk about this <3
@@JeanDeBouche Thanks for your kind words. Yes, these preserved treasures can open windows to a simpler and fascinating time, and bring them to life.
True, sometimes I wish I could go back to September of 1857 in france, and meet Leon Scott, myself I wish I could hear more phonaugtoprams…
Nightmare. Fuel.

It’s like when you are frying big ben
What’s the whooshing noise in the back
That’s the surface noise of the wax cylinder record turning as it’s being played
Can you please try and restore this?
If the Big Ben chime was in the Megan movie
Oh wow so heartbeats being recorded isn’t new then it’s been around this the 1800 century it’s impressive of Mr.Legar was able to live so long but still had a good healthy heart and that wrist thing is basically like heart monitor or recording that we use today to record our heartbeat and listening to them

🇬🇧😐
Yep That Empire Is Great Britain And Can Sound Like Old Thing
This sounds 1000x better than the 1860 one.
The fact that this is recorded in 1890, yet i almost understand this man's english.
This is storage oscilloscope in 1800. I am very appreciated what his demonstration.
Why was microphone quality so ass?
It was recorded on tin foil for one, secondly they don't age well either. This could have sounded much worse if it wasn't 100% properly stored. Also, this is probably a recording of a recording.
Harrison's good resolution photo is a masterpiece
Wow a lot of people were alive on that point like Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Pierce, Martin Van Buren, William R. King (possibly) and....... John Wilkes Booth
Total the most great. Only the waves on the piece on paper. He couldn't know, that nowadays the scientsts make it through, to give his voice into the audio format. Great!!
Still beter than my pal's microphone
This is Hell’s version of Big Ben
Ts hard
As argentinian i most say the first sound recorded in 1853 is as old as the constitution of my country.
Me: *trying to sleep* Some random mosquito for no reason:
Since this was posted 10 years ago there, audio processing plugins have been developed that can correct pronounced wow and flutter such as often afflicts old recordings in analog mediums. It would be interesting to hear what they could do for these examples.
I was this video’s 2,100th liker
I don't know why they kept making movies after this, they already peaked
