Rabbi Mary Beth Raskin Receives the Sherwin T. Wine Lifetime Achievement Award - December 6, 2024
Rabbi Mary Beth Raskin is the 2024 recipient of the Sherwin T. Wine Lifetime Achievement Award. Mary discovered Humanistic Judaism at Oraynu Congregation while living in Toronto on a work assignment. Upon returning to Portland, OR, she became involved as a volunteer leader in Kol Shalom Community for Humanistic Judaism. Mary then applied to the Leadership Program of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism and, after certification, went on to complete the Rabbinic Program and receive ordination in 2023. During that time, Mary expanded her leadership role in the Humanistic Judaism movement, serving as Board President of the Society for Humanistic Judaism for four years, leading with grace and dignity. Mary recently established Cultural Synagogue. Mary embodies the Humanistic Judaism values of empathy, compassion, social justice, competence, and reliability. We welcomed friends, family, and colleagues in thanking her and honoring her with this award!

    Rabbi Tamburello, you were my Italian teacher many years ago. If I remember correctly, your were raised Greek or Eastern Orthodox? I remember thinking that was interesting because you were Italian-American and I thought all Italian-Americans were Roman Catholic. You were a very kind, genuine and invested teacher. It’s interesting to see that you converted to Judaism, and also became a Rabbi. I hope that you are well and happy! I still remember you all these years later. 🙏🏼❤️🔥

    I left my father's preferred Jewish community after my Bar Mitzvah because it had no meaning for me. I always considered myself Jewish. I've changed how I connect to it over the years. I've only left behind the idea one can only be Jewish in someone else's mind.

    This is the same idiot who said the idea of hundreds of thousands of isralites passed through the red sea is crazy. Then he states " the bible days there are 603,000 males which means over 2 million people who passed through thise waters" Further states " And most likely would have taken several weeks for all those people just to cross and that the whole idea is crazy" Now just because jesus can turn water into wine how the fck do u turn 603,000 into 2 million?

    Moses climbed a mountain, hung out with God for 40 days and nights while God wrote His most perfect laws on stone tablets (proving that God is a slow writer, since it took Him nearly seven times longer to scribe His most perfect laws than to create the entire damn universe). Coming down from the mountain, possibly sporting horns, Moses had a temper tantrum and broke the stone tablets on which God had so painstakingly written. But God was decent enough to make a second copy. Then, Moses led the Hebrews through 40 years of wandering in the desert, engaging in atrocities such as genocide along the way.

    We Jews are both an ethnicity and a religion. You can be Jewish by both or one. They have found Jewish DNA which is mostly related to Arabs, we Jews have our own language and nation, we are as much an ethnicity as Black or Hispanic. But anyone can convert to Judaism and become Jewish by the religion. They are then a fellow son or daughter of Abram. You can be born an Israelite, or you can be "adopted" into the tribe.

    He's a great speaker but is there a connection between European Jews and let's say the Jews of Libya outside of religion which contains a lot of myths and legends and history. This is the heart of Jewish culture not Yiddish which is what he seems to be saying about his neighbourhood in New York.

    @stenchmachine She knows what prayer is, both in a religious sense and in a humanistic sense. She read the dictionary meaning for the purpose of this video. She wanted to get the point across that her definition of prayer is not hers alone. It's not something she made herself. And the dictionary is a reference everyone can use to confirm that.

  • @BungleZippie
    @BungleZippie 13 років тому

    @stenchmachine You're being disingenuous. Humanistic Jews don't pray to a supernatural being so it's a different way of approaching prayer. There is no single way to pray and there are many techniques and approaches. Do you even know what qualifications and training a Humanistic rabbi needs? Look it up before passing judgement. If you think you could do better then go off and do it.

    @stenchmachine She's basically challenging how 'prayer' is conceived. The dictionary part is to illustrate a literal view against other ideas for the audience. Yes she is a Rabbi - and its fair to say she had come across the idea of prayer before

  • @southernlight6

    @tripletrules Romans was not written to Jews Triplerules. It was written to Gentile Christians whose attitudes and actions were making Christianity unpalitable among other Gentiles around them. You cannot pull one part out of a letter and make a case with it. The entire letter is one whole thing. You are very wrong.
