The Federal Convention Opens
Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress lacked the authority to raise an army without the approval of the states, all treaties had to be unanimously approved, and most importantly, Congress did not have the power to levy taxes. Congress decided to hold a convention of all states in Philadelphia to review how to fix these and other issues. To add credibility to the convention, the primary organizers, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, felt it was critical for George Washington to attend. Washington reluctantly agreed to represent Virginia at the gathering, and was unanimously chosen to preside over the convention, which began on May 25, 1787 in Philadelphia.
Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, discusses the opening of the Federal Convention, and why it still matters today.

General George Washington’s Finest Hour
Переглядів 143 тис.19 годин тому
On December 4, 1783, General Washington gathered his officers together at Fraunces Tavern and bid them an emotional farewell. The next task was to resign his commission, no small matter for the man who had led the nation since June 1775. Washington recognized it was critical to the preservation of our republic that he relinquish his military power to civilian authority. Consequently, on Decembe...

By early 1783, a few high-ranking officers in the Continental Army, then stationed in Newburgh, were considering refusing to disband until Congress fulfilled their promises of a pension for the men. Their leader was General Horatio Gates, George Washington’s second-in-command. On March 10, Major John Armstrong, aide to General Gates, circulated a letter suggesting the Army refuse to disband unt...

In December 1782, the Continental Army had been fighting the British Army for over seven years. With peace negotiations underway, the soldiers were garrisoned near Newburgh, New York. Congress had passed a resolution in 1780 when the outcome of the war was still in doubt that promised Army officers a lifetime pension of half-pay upon discharge from the service. However, as peace talks progresse...

    Spain paid and funded the Yorktown campaign and also paid and refurbished Degrasse's French fleet allowing Degrasse to travel to both the Chesapeake and later Yorktown which Spain also had a huge role in the military planning of Yorktown which is why the Spanish Ambassador was invited to the Yorktown victory celebration in October of last year 2023! Spain protected French possessions in the Caribbean allowing Degrasse to travel to his destination freely without worry! Spanish General Bernardo de Gálvez was kind and generous enough to release his own French troops under Spanish command and ALLOWED Degrasse to take them to go reinforce Rochambeau at Yorktown! Spain paid both the French and Continental soldiers who hadn't been paid for several months and years causing several mutinees! Spain also sent muskets to Saratoga in coordination with the French in 1777! Spain sent weapons and cannons and supplies to the American Colonies inside French ships from France! So when the ships arrived everyone assumed the entire cargo was only French lol! Huge mistake but understandable! The very first foreign weapons arrived from Spain to Marblehead Massachusetts in February 1775 by Diego de Gardoqui! Spanish weapons were there before Lexington and Concord before the Declaration of Independence and before America's so called first and oldest ally France! Spain definitely tipped the balance in favor of the American Revolution!

    One part of the story that is not well discussed or explained is how the troops were provisioned on their long march from RI to NY to NJ and the VA. These were apparently caches of supplies along the way and the troops marched on parallel stream through NJ (for example).

    • @AmericanaCorner
      @AmericanaCorner Місяць тому

      You raise a good point regarding the caches of supplies along Washington’s route of march to Yorktown. Without these mini supply depots, his army could not have sustained their prolonged march. Prepositioning caches of supplies along a planned route of march was the “best practice” for sustaining an army during a prolonged campaign or march during that era. Nathanael Greene did a masterful job of creating caches these during Washington’s retreat from New York in 1776 and is often credited with helping Washington remain ahead of the British. The other option for sustaining an army on a long march was to use a supply wagon train, usually pulled by oxen or horses, to carry supplies with the army. This slowed down the entire column and required soldiers to protect the relatively defenseless supply wagons that were easy prey for cavalry raids. Thank you for your question. Take care.

    I enjoy each of your videos greatly. I wondered about a couple of things: When you started this channel and the videos, did you have a "progression" in mind, or were you choosing "tidbits" of history and randomly producing each episode? Also, as a former classroom teacher, have you considered how a teacher of U.S. History might utilize these segments in their work? In other words, can they be "packaged" into various and related units for use in the classroom?

      I did not have a progression in mind at the start but subsequently decided to post stories of our nation’s past in chronological order. It seems to make sense to tell our story as it unfolded. Regarding packaging these stories and videos, I have given this idea a lot of thought and hope to create a more user friendly and teacher friendly way of bundling our content in the coming year.
