The produce displays should be like a work of art. Like a “still life” art piece if it can. .. It’s been said that. “ We eat with our eyes “ and “ we are what we eat” and instinctively….we hope that elevates us somehow. Department stores made revenue by building value in the product by following specific rules when merchandising. signage….How far away can you see the price from? Etc… no added value language should discourage me from buying fresh produce.🍓🥬🍒🫛🧄🥕

So, coming from the perspective of a LONG time produce category manager for a major food distribution company, one of the challenges with branding at a grower level is product availability based on Mother Nature. Not all fruits and veg are available year round from the same grower. So, the big retail companies that can contract with "packers" to pack and label under their brand is how they do it. For example, romaine lettuce. Half the year it grows in the Salinas valley, then when Salinas gets chilly, it moves to Yuma, AZ. If a retailer contracts with a parent company (ie Taylor Farms, Church Brothers, D'arrigo) they will pack under the store label no matter where it comes from, geographically. Think tomatoes, other than smaller ones, which are grown in controlled greenhouses, "everyday" tomatoes come from various areas of the country depending on season/weather. As someone who who was 25 and waking up to work at hunts point market not too long ago, I have a lot of thoughts on the market hours! Greg has a good point that most food service customers and even retailers would prefer their deliveries early in the morning, but much like how many produce companies have used technology to get ahead of their supply chain planning (and have their buyers working banker's hours) we need to empower our customers to do the same!
