I LOVE teaching high school kids!! Honestly, I am happy to have 2-3 preps (courses to teach) because I like the variety. When I taught only one course, I kept thinking I told a class something, only to find I was thinking of another class. I am still saying "did I tell this to you guys already?" If you love middle school, please stay!!! We are in need of amazing middle school math teachers for sure 💕

It is called a Wacom Tablet. Since having to give up my iPad, this has been an ok solution. It is a little hard to get used to since there is no screen on the tablet itself, but with some practice, its good. The one I have has to be plugged in, so I am tied to my desk/podium area. They do make Bluetooth ones I believe, but I'm not 100% sure. I had to download the driver for the tablet to work, otherwise, you can use it with any program. I am still testing out different programs I want to use it with. I am currently using Annotate.net.

It really was a hard decision, but one I am glad I made. It has not been the easiest transition, but I am happier teaching this year than I was the past several.

I have used both a document camera and a Smartboard in the past and really like the Smartboard more. The reason for this is that I don't feel like I am stuck at my desk/podium while I teach. I like to wander around while teaching, and the Smartboard allowed a little more freedom (in my opinion). I used to teaching with an iPad, which is my absolute favorite way to teach, because I can wander around the room while writing on the board. It is amazing. The downfall to either of these over the document camera is that there is a small learning curve to the technology, and sometimes it doesn't work. My Smartboard is not working well, so I am trying different technology to find something that does. Sometime my handwriting isn't as nice on the Smartboard as with using a document camera, but with practice over the years, there is almost no difference. I think the biggest thing is finding what works best for you and your students.

I am using the SmartNotebook software in this video. It is a free download and is great! I have used it for about 15 years.

This is a great idea! I may have to look into something like this if I am not able to tweak my current solution. I have changed to have students turn in their work using their phones into Canvas and it is already SO MUCH BETTER!!!

So glad to hear that's working. My students are using phone or Chromebook camera to turn in on Google classroom. After a 2-week grace period I started closing the assignment submission what's the due date and time passed. Now I have some kids who are consistently failing to remember to do that. But I have to close the submission or else some students will just copy the answers from the posted key when they come in.

That's what I would do! Great idea!

I thought about it, but I am up and down the stairs throughout the day, and the elevator is not close to any of the rooms or office, so I am not sure if this would help or make things take even longer. Definitely still something to ponder.

​@@KateDean-SecondaryMath could you get TWO carts with the same supplies to be kept in the rooms you use, one on each floor?

My school used "AirServer" to connect our iPads to our computers. I believe you will need something similar (apple tv, airserver, or similar) in order to connect the two.

I share my iPad screen with my computer, which is them projected onto my whiteboard through my projector. I don't use a mic when recording, I just use my phone or iPad. There is some background noise with my Logitech Crayon, but my students never complained about it being distracting.

The puzzle activity was SO fun and am planning on using it again next year!! I LOVE my Lego flowers! I have a few more, but keep forgetting to bring them in 😂 This is the first time having a department office like this. In the past, I have had a math office, but it was much smaller, and only for us to eat, and a place for our copier, supplies, and 2 desks in case teachers wanted to work in there. This is a huge change for me.

How do you have students turn in their homework? I am STRUGGLING this year!! My students have Chromebooks at my new school, so I have abandoned the method I have used for the last 8 years. It is taking way too long to check every students homework every period, and I feel like I am making mistakes when recording grades because I am trying to get to 32 kids. I can also see there is going to be a huge issue with absent work vs late work and keeping all that organized.

I have small classes, but I just do a quick visual check of their papers. I project the answers on the screen at the beginning of class, and as they check their work, I walk around and look at everyone’s paper for just a second or two.

I had the "normal" iPad, and didn't really ever feel the need for a bigger screen. It was a school iPad (and I no longer teach at the school), so I am not sure how much memory there was, but I know there wasn't a ton. I would annotate the PDF, upload it to my Google Drive, and then delete it from my iPad after teaching that lesson to all of my classes. This definitely helped keep the memory free.

Yes, I LOVE the groups!! It was amazing to be able to provide binders for all kids. Now there is no excuse not to be organized.

I have to keep reminding myself that I won't have it all 100% done by the start of the year, and that's ok!! Thankfully I was given a desk and found a working copier 🎉

It really depends on the kids. Some kids LOVE the couch area while others really hate it. The same goes for the tall table. Many of my short kids don't like the tall table. I would say the plastic stools are the least desired choice, and kids will often say "I need something with a back because I need back support." I am not sure how much of that is because they just want to slouch and how much is because they really need it haha!

I do not screen record while teaching. If I want to make a video for my students, I use the app ExplainEverything (it may also be called ExplainEDU).

I have taught on a variety of class times - 75, 50, and 90. I honestly liked the 50 minute periods best only because I saw the kids every day and didn't feel like I had to rush as much to get everything in! How do you handle homework in your class? I LOVED having my students turn in their homework as a PDF from their iPads! I know students can take pictures with their Chromebook, but I am not sure I want to go that route.

@@KateDean-SecondaryMath right now, students have their homework out at the beginning of class and I walk up and down the aisles. I take perhaps 2 minutes. It's a completion grade. Usually 10 problems or fewer. If all are attempted and work is shown, 5 pts. 3 pts for halfway. 1 pt for no work shown, just answers. If you can come up with a virtual turn in for Chromebooks, I'll probably copy that!!

That is how I used to check homework before my students had iPad, and it probably the way I will check homework. I may change my mind after talking with other math teachers in my department to see how they handle homework. I will be sure to update on how I deal with homework sometime during the school year!

I wanted to update you on what we're doing after 3 weeks of school! I switched to having students take a photo and submit the homework on GC before class. So instead of posting my daily materials as quote material, I post them as an assignment. There were a couple of days of learning curve. Students can take a picture with the Chromebook camera and submit those files, and I encourage them to use their phones at home and go on to Google Classroom because it is much easier to take a picture or even scan to a PDF and submit from a phone. Some students figured it all out right away and they helped the others over a couple of days. Now we're all on the same page. I'm grading within Google classroom by clicking through, seeing that the work is shown and the name is on the page. Takes very little time, and I learned how to sync the assignment to my assignment in our grading portal. When I go to the portal, I click Google classroom sync at top of the assignment and grades populate. I just have to make sure I clicked return within Google classroom!

And what I forgot to say just now, student enter and take out HW, check against the key that I project on the board, and I may only answer 2 or 3 questions once the bell rings. We are definitely gaining back some time at the end of class to start homework in class

Great question! I have slides that I put up when kids walk into the room. There are different sections on the slide (Do Now, I Can, Today, Meme of the Day, Upcoming Dates). I have a different side for each subject, and this is where I put their learning targets (we call them "I Can" statements). If you watch any of my Day in the Life videos, I typically show them and have a link to the one I use.

@@stacyr4768 I do not. My admin knows this is how I post them and can share the slides with them if they want to see them. Having 3 different courses that I teach and one whiteboard, there is no way to have all of this up all the time. I would definitely talk to your admin and see if this a possibility for you. I used to have a list of the standards above my board, and would Velcro a start on the standard I was working on that day, but after moving classrooms, I decided to use the slides instead.

I laminated the labels first, then just used tape to stick them to the drawers. Even with my move, they have held on strong!!

I just used regular scotch tape - probably an off brand as my school didn't buy anything name brand 😂 I imagine double sided tape would work well too!!

Just moving schools. I don't intend on leaving teaching, and I truly LOVE it! Despite all of the negativity you might heave about teaching, it still is a great profession. If you do decide to go into teaching, I wish you the best.

Welcome to my channel! It really was a tough decision, and I already missing those I worked closest with, but I know it will be better in the long run. I have no ill will towards the school or the people, and if changes are made, I could see myself going back years from now. But for now, I have made peace with my decision and am ready for my next adventure.

Congratulations on moving up to teach PreCalc and Calculus! I will definitely continue sharing my journey as I move into my new school. I have spent some time over the summer looking over the material for my school school. Thankfully PreCalculus is PreCalculus no matter where you teach (for the most part), so I don't have a ton of work to do. I have been working on creating new resources for my students, so we aren't using the book the entire time.
