I completely agree! I've read Anna Karenina and love it. Since then I've made it a point to read more long classics, the most recent being War and Peace. I love your insights about long-term concentration and how our opinions shift as we grow.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH ❤. When I read it high school I skipped the peasant parts because they were boring. I re-read it in my 60’s and still like Anna and Vronsky but also Kitty and Levin. Karenin is a saint! It’s great on audio too.

My favorite long book is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Try it you will love it.

Miz Anne! Mysteries are more than plot! Criminal behavior makes for complex character studies, and crime is - ironically - the best literary insight to a place. Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins in Black Los Angeles, the great Elmore Leonard's legion of cops and crooks in Detroit and Miami, and James Lee Burke's appreciation of the antediluvian beauty of Louisiana, Texas, and Montana combined with his ruined choir of characters with barbed wired souls are all worth reading. Sometimes you don't even care who did what to whom!

Oh, that happened to a friend of mine! He’s a priest and went to read to the school children and they gave him The Velveteen Rabbit. He was sobbing at the end and all the children ran up to him saying “Don’t cry Father, he’s real now.” which made it worse.
