Fluval Stratum Substrate Long Term Review and Koi Angelfish Spawn
Sharing my experiences on using all Fluval Stratum as substrate for freshwater planted tank aquarium and first koi angelfish spawn. Fluval Stratum is easily found at Petco, Petsmart and other large retailers in the United States and it is probably the most common aqua soil available.
Really happy and surprised to see the firstborn of the angel fish today, I’ve had these angelfish since they were about the size of a US quarter coin and they’ve grown steadily since March until clearly they’ve reached maturity and are able to spawn today. These fish came from the Aquarium co-op store in Edmonds Washington and they were bred from Dean’s fish room who is local to this area.

Koi Angelfish First Spawn #short
Переглядів 913 роки тому
Very first spawn of Koi Angelfish in freshwater planted tank today! Bought three of ‘Dean’s Angels’ at the Aquarium Co-op a few months ago, and they were dime sized, and have been growing steadily, and surprised today with their first spawn on an Aponogeton leaf. Substrate is Fluval Stratum, heavily planted aquarium and is community tank with tetras.
Top 5 Substrates for Planted Tanks and 1 you should avoid

Walk through the pros and cons of Carib Sea Eco- complete, regular gravel, ADA Amazonia version II, Fluval Stratum and sand. My recommendations for substrate if you are a beginner to planted tanks versus more patient/experienced hobbyist.
Setting up new 50g SeaClear Planted Tank Beginner Aquascape (Fluval Stratum, ADA substrate) Part 1

Set up for new beginner aquascape planted aquarium, SearClear 50g acrylic freshwater fish tank, with ADA Power Sand Advance, Bacter 100, topped with aqua soil from Fluval Stratum and ADA Amazonia version 2. Love the driftwood, it inspires my aquascaping and Aquarium Co-Op sponge filters! #plantedtank #aquascape #hardscape #freshwateraquarium
How easy is it to assemble Imagitarium 40g metal aquarium stand from Petco for your new fish tank?
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
Let’s assemble this Imagitarium 40g breeder aquarium metal fish tank stand together! This stand is made for 40g breeder which is actually 47g capacity. I bought this at Petco and I will be adding a top on it too for my SeaClear acrylic aquarium.
Final hardscape decision in 50g aquascape for planted tank

Building out new planted tank, using dragon stone and spider wood, after learning more about aquascaping and aquascapes, decided to use rule of thirds and came up with this design. Had to accommodate for the sponge filter too - fishkeeping maintenance practicality is important as well as aesthetics 😁
Feeding Nano Planted Tank Rasboras, Tetras, Pygmy Cories Repashy Soilent Green

Wanted to share my Cories, Rasboras and Tetras enjoying instant baby brine shrimp and Repashy Soilent Green #aquarium #plantedtank #nano
Hi subbed to your channel, supporting you from my channel in NY@ joy of fish keeping. Thanks for this video. Have never tried other than inert substrate. Want to do a 20 gal nano and considering stratum maybe som shrimps. Wanted to experiment. Thanks for the great insights
Your video helped me decide on this one
Using course sand is no problem. Filter sand for example. Just avoid builder's sand, play sand, sand from a beach, etc. And good old natural soil should have a place in the top 5 for planted tanks - it's going to be way better than that gravel.
Koi's ph scale is so high, I cant wait to see this
U dont know what U are gagging about
👎👎👎
He mean had email me.I don't has small tanks go some where got small aquarium. I go aquarium are generous
Thank you for the video and information! Question: what are your thoughts on capping the stratum with either sand or gravel?
I know this is an old video so I doubt this will be seen but I have a question. Would 60 pounds of eco complete with. Root tabs under out 3/4" of sand be good?
How much water change will I be doing if I use gravels instead of sand and which one will be easier? Let’s say I don’t know anything and I got 2 fish tank 2 bags of sand and 2 bags of gravels and ofc I do over feeding my fish now I’m in brink of getting blue green algae which is not algae and it stink and now I need to do least 50% water change will sand will be easy to use vacuum and try get that fish waste less work for me or going through gravels inch by inch will be easier?
Wonder shell is rubbish use coral or lime stone u won't have any more problems
Is this better with dirty under the fluval???
Garden soil capped with sand is still king.
Did you have to rinse it before adding it to your tanks?
I didn’t rinse it before adding it. It’s volcanic soil so it would very muddy to rinse I think. Assuming you are setting up the tank, put the stratum in and then carefully add water, you can use a plate or something like that to pour the water in on so that the substrate doesn’t get displaced and make a cloudy mess. Hope this helps!
Did you have difficulty in putting plants into the stratum?
Thanks for posting! I enjoyed the video and the one about the different substrates which is the first video of yours I came upon. One thing about feeding my fish that stresses me is putting some food in that sinks too fast for the top feeders. Then I have some real slow eaters who get out competed by the fast eaters. It just requires some extra effort. Then there are the fish that just have the notion to get food from the top and can chase down the food that starts to drop...the easy ones. One thing I have been trying is to use a pepper/spice grinder to make pellets smaller and then they won't sink, at least so fast. Anyway, I am happy to find another woman in the aquatics category on UA-cam. I've recently discovered Fish Geek Girl and Tiny Menagerie and now your channel. You all make really quality videos with good visuals and real information too. There seems to be a very strange lack of women in the hobby that present themselves. I am sure there are plenty of women who are aquarium/fish keepers out there. Not to get preachy but in this day in age, I really have a problem with this.
Very good information. Thanks.
Fluval stratum in my experience doesnt leach ammonia, if anything its so little that my tests doesnt show it.
What soil is used here???
It’s an aquasoil - I think I used Brightwell Aquatics in here - Rio Escuro F or ADA Amazonia.
so... if i only have gravel but want to add fluval stratum... and 8 fish... I can't... ? or can i add it slowly over time?
Setting up a tank with aquasoil if you can get filter media from another tank it will definitely speed up your cycle process
Thank you!!!
That drift wood is perfect
followed just to listen to your voice. but a very good vid learnt a lot
Looking good....
@naomiwaters longtime no see !
If you want to keep snails and other invertebrates I highly recommend Salty Shrimp brand remineralizers. Your crushed coral and bone do help a bit but the dead inverts are a clear sign that they just can’t keep up. Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ would work beautifully as it takes care of your calcium and carbonates as well as all the other trace minerals.
Uns controsoil is good
I’m trying this for the first time in a new tank - but I wish I had chosen a finer grain one - I got the Normal 5mm size, but found it difficult to plant into
Is this the driftwood tank from the previous video?
Thanks for the informative video. I'm planning a very planted tank and also use "Stratum". 💕💕💕💕
Sand is absolutely fine. Especially as a cap.
Can you mix some of the substrates instead of just layering then add a cap on top?
Probably ? 🤔 Some of it's going to mix together over time anyway. 😉
fluval stratum is very light. every time i plant, it will float up. i don't have much budget to increase the thickness of fluval soil. can i put thin layer of small gravel (5mm) on top of the soil?
Yes u can, I also don't like how stratum with no cap and gets my water black
Can you put stratum over sand
You ever use crushed coral as a base for the soils to bring the ph up naturally?.
I'm gonna go with the eco complete I'm kind of impatient..haha
"Patience" is the Primary Key to success with planted aquariums ! Never "React" to problems... Think your way through the process slowly and deliberately. 😌
informative, thanks
This is why I want to release my betta back into the wild, the price of baked pebbled dirt is killing me and I've not shopped for plants yet 🤣
Unsubbed, no content
Sorry! I need to get back to it for sure. Thanks for the reminder!
Are you using c02?
No this tank doesn’t have CO2. It has Fluval 3.0 light on it.
People keep saying eco complete is inert but cribsea lists eco complete as basaltic volcanic soil. So how is it inert?
I think your aquariums are amazing and your videos are very informative. I am trying myself to set up a 20 gallon tank and i would like to have the same look as yours. Also, in terms of substrate I like the fact that you mixing them, is there a particular order for example: 1st layer sand , 2nd up aqua soul and top layer gravel?. Also, I am willing to wait 5 to 8 months but don’t know the process.. Is there a book that you recommends for beginners like me? I would like to know about water changes and water test during the beginning stages. I can wait to see your 50 gallons Acrylics tank that you were setting up.. take care, any help will be greatly appreciated! ;) thanks!
Which one should be avoided?
Eco Complete... 😝
This is one expensive video, deserve more appreciation.
You've got the most confusing accent I've ever experienced.
Haha - I’ve lived in many different countries that’s why 😀 hopefully still understandable and not annoying tho
@@naomiwaters - Lol. No... Not annoying. Just couldn't tell from sentence to sentence if you were British or American.
All good then - some South African in there too 😀
I'm so glad I stumbled onto your channel, Naomi. The layering of the plants you have in this tank is really dreamy, adding you to my inspiration list ✨
Helpful, thank you.
Hi! I already have some substrate- white sand (sansibar), and 2kgs of aquarium gravel (I'm planning on having a low light low tech tank. It's 16 gallons / 65 litres). Can I plant some low-light plants directly in the sand? There isn't enough gravel to cover the tank. Thank you!
Yes, you can plant into the sand for sure. Depending on the plants, you might need root tabs. Anubias do better attached to wood, and crypts would need root tabs.
The back of 'eco complete" whish reads on bag as eco planted says on the back that it raises ph.
HI thanks for your vedio I have a question please I am going to plant a 300 L aquarium 120×50×50 I want to do easy to medium planting ( heavy plant) I have on hand now inleart substrate is called dennerle depo mix 10 in 1 And I have gravel . I am thinking to buy 1 active soil ADA mix it with the 10 in 1 substrate and on to I will put some gravel Is that ok about ammonia I do have filters and will deal with it. Thanks
Thank you for this info!
