BOP - Knowing God as Almighty 2- The Covenant Lifestyle (Synopsis) Text: Gen 17:1-3 Almighty is that attribute that reveals God as Preeminent and All-powerful - the Ultimate King over all creation. Abraham was born under an idolatrous culture, yet he found God and got intimate with Him. Abraham was not the only one that knew the true God in his time, but he was the only one who developed such a unique personal relationship with God. Act 10:34-35; 2 Chron 16:9a. Abraham had many previous encounters with God. But the encounter in Gen 17 made great impact in his life and lifted his status as God’s friend and covenant partner. The covenant had barrage of blessings for Abraham, but also had responsibilities. The responsibility was clear - a demand for a separated life, a life of holiness. Abraham’s worship signified absolute submission to the covenant and triggered the activation of the blessings of the Almighty. The token of circumcision which Abraham and his descendants had to observe was hard and painful, but Abraham promptly obeyed, with his entire household. Note the remarkable things that happened in Abraham’s life soon after: Gen 18. God gave Abraham an angelic visitation, and Himself was in the company. He speeded up the promise to give him a son through his wife Sarah and gave him access to Heavens classified information (Gen 18:17-18). That meant that Abraham was now in God’s inner circle. See: Amos 3:7; John 15:15-16 That offered Abraham an opportunity to intercede for Lot and Sodom. Gen 19. The same God Almighty who visited Abraham with blessings visited Sodom and Gomorrah with wrath and utter destruction because of their sinful and abominable lifestyle. Gen 19:24 See: Heb 12:29; Heb 10:31. Observe the differences in the testimonies of Abraham and that of his nephew Lot, both of who were recognized in Scripture as righteous (2 Pet 2:7-8). When God encountered Abraham, he worshipped and absolutely yielded to the will and commands of God, but when God encountered Lot he lingered in obedience (Gen 19:15-17). Satisfying God’s demand was hard and painful for Abraham, but he promptly obeyed, bringing his entire family along. But when God gave Lot a hard task as His perfect will to secure his full safety, he complained and argued, and settled with God’s permissive will. Lot’s testimony demonstrates a lifestyle of carnality which is a contrast to the spiritual lifestyle we are called to live as Believer (Rom 8:6-8). the l Abraham life and that of his descendants prospered and flourished, while that of Lot ended in shame and misery (Gen 19:30-38). Pray with James 4:8; Phil 3:10: Matt 5:48; 1 Pet 1:16; Psa 143:8-11; Psa 63:1-2.
