How does the BoreMaster measure the minimum wall thickness further down/along the barrel? I understood minimum wall thickness measurements taken 18 inches from the breach were necessary and important to have.

up to what distance is the laser beam seen
it depends on the color of the background and the ambient light conditions. Under a typical daylight situation and against a whiteish wall you could easily see it 100 feet away. At nite maybe several hundred feet depending on the wall color ( reflection ability). Lighter wall color is better then dark.
