JUDY GARLAND 1967 rare costume test and song
Original 1967 stereo studio test mix of Judy Garland singing I'll Plant My Own Tree from Valley Of The Dolls. Judy's recording is accompanied by footage of her costumes tests for the film. Thankfully, she was spared the indignity of appearing in the finished product. I do not own, nor do I have any claim on this video. No copyright infringement is intended.

    It's probably for the better she was let go from the film. The final version would have humiliated her. Just the scene alone where Helen gets her wig ripped off and is bald underneath (original script version). Not to mention the gay slurs peppered throughout the film.

    Her poses were awkward, as if she were terribly self conscious and had never been in front of a camera before. The giggling, joking and goofiness seemed inappropriate during costume tests as the director is trying to get her to cooperate. Another channel has the audio of them speaking to each other. She appeared drunk or high. Unprofessional.

    The story goes that Judy took some if not all of her costumes when she was let go from VOTD. All I know is, when I saw her live on the Boston Common (I was there all day long to get a good spot), she was wearing that sequined pants suit.

    Love Judy but this was not a role for her. Suffering from drugs and alcoholism it was best she sat this one out. But again too old to play the ingenue. But the role of “O’Hara” suited Judy 45 yo at the time. Of course Judy a seasoned actress could of pull off the role presented to Patty Duke. Either way you look 👀 at the decisions were correct. Valley of the Dolls was not suited for a beautiful star 🌟 like Judy who life had different levels of tragically events. Judy stay in her dignity. A STAR 🌟 THE BRIGHTEST STAR ❤

    I have a gut feeling she didn't really want this role, because she didn't fit the character nor did she feel comfortable playing it. Fear and guilt took over.

    I was there. All of the other nights Judy came down the center aisle singing "I feel a song coming on". And that outfit !!! It must have been made of some indestructible material...she wore it for the last years. For those who don't know, she was supposed to wear it in "Valley of the Dolls". They let her keep it, since Susan Hayward took the part. Gee, I miss her.

    A very silly song, but the lady made the best of it. I remember from a biographical film that an early vocal coach scolded her for fluffing a song. I think she never forgot that lesson and put her heart and soul into every song ever since. She becomes the song, unlike so many who merely use a song as a showcase for their voice. I think this is why she remains the best. And they say she was expert at performance. They'd run her through a routine just once and she'd have it down, including those extravaganza song and dance numbers in her movie musicals. These costumes were okay, except for that white gown. That one distorted her figure, making it look out of proportion.

    She gives it a Broadway feel and her age really comes through. I prefer Susan singing, but I like how she looks better than the other actress. If only Judy wasn't so broken at the time, she really could have been wonderful in the picture.

    She was awfully thin I don't think she even ate but she waited all day long even though she recorded the song for the movie The director or the producer whoever it was made her wait all day long and just said tell her to try the costumes on and then she didn't get the job this is how you treat a legendary woman but she was spectacular and I love the fact that Lorna said she walked off with that last outfit and wore it at the palace

    • @CharlieChilders-wm9gb

      So very very sad. This great icon should have been treated with respect , patience, love and understanding. She was trying her very best and trying to make a comeback. She was there early and was treated like crap , making her wait all day till around 3 or 4 o'clock (clean and sober .) She was trying her very best but later, after all this time and very nervous, she began to drink (etc) to calm herself ... After only a week they fired her. She truly didn't deserve this. She knew this was going to be the end of her film comeback. So very humiliating for a star of her caliber. Then came the London fiasco-printed world wide. This was probably the final end. She was dead 6 months later.😢😓😞

    These costumes are for a tall person, not a petite... except the pant suit... song is terrible... not in the right key for garland... holding words like tree, plant or grow are just terrible.... but susan hayward looked passable delivering the song with yet another voice doing it. I just don't think the public would accept garland in this bitch role... hayward was suited for it.

    Patty Duke has an interveiw with Bruce Villanch talking about the Judy situation. Substance and some horrible enabling sycophants helped Judy disintegrate before she could even make it to the set. As Patty says in the interveiw she should not even have been hired. She was also so erratic during the I Could Go On Singing shoot that the crew referred to her as "It". She was a great Hollywood talent that was destroyed by the system and her own poor choices.

    • @CharlieChilders-wm9gb
      @CharlieChilders-wm9gb 4 роки тому

      I saw that short interview also. Patty's character (as everyone already knew at the time) was loosely based on Judy Garland as a star during the late 40's at MGM. This was a very awkward and precarious situation for everyone involved-especially Judy. This was the reason thatPatty said she should never have been hired-out of proper respect for Judy Garland,! Sadly, she was homeless with no money and desperately needed the job. It must have been humiliating for her to have to accept a job that was so unworthy of her.

  • @matthough3590
    @matthough3590 6 років тому

    Yes, she's thin, but apart from the white gown with the excessively dropped waist which swallows her, she looks fine in these, and notice that costume designer Travilla didn't change a thing when Susan Hayward took over; she wears these same designs in her four sequences.

    WTF were they thinking casting her in this film? Even Patty Duke (who adored Judy) said she was so incredibly ill at the time and obviously could not even function. She loathed the director (whom she refers to as the meanest son of a bitch she ever worked for) for often (publicly) humiliating Judy.
