How to join velvet & Pile fabrics
Velvet can be tricksy because of the pile pushing and pulling as you sew. Knowing how to add tension and slack in all the right places to achieve a flat, even seam, is a game changer.
.
I have a video tutorial showing and explaining how I do it in the free area of my new website at www.Windmillcurtainroom.com or click the 🔗link🔗 in my bio 😀

Trade Preview | Start to finish making of a bonded interlined roman blind

This is a trailer for an extensive two hour tutorial video that is a pretty accurate representation of the real time making of a lined and bonded interlined Roman blind. I make up Roman blinds using several different methods depending of fabric, linings, finish or whatever my customer may request of me. However, left to my own devices, this is my go to method and shows how I calculate the cutti...

    Oh you are a gem! I was almost in tears when the curtain man delivered my brand new curtains with pressure marks. I thought they were ruined however I will follow your advice and give this a try. Do you know if a microfiber or soft cloth would work? Thank you so much for posting this.

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 4 дні тому

      It's almost impossible to pack velvet curtains without them getting marked, especially if they've been packed for a few days, so I'm not surprised. The marks may eventually fall out, but sometimes they need a bit of encouragement 😉 Yes, definitely try a microfiber cloth. Anything with a bit of a pile will work or a really soft clothes brush or one of those velvety lint removers. Just make sure the microfiber cloth has been washed so there's no chance the colour can run. Good luck 🤞

    would buckram be ok for washable curtains? I am worried it will be wavy after 30% wash

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 16 днів тому

      The buckram used here is not designed to be wet washed. Hand-made curtains like these should only ever be dry cleaned. If your fabrics and linings are washable though, then you could use a synthetic heading buckram like the type used for eyelet curtains.

      I can't say I've ever charged more for velvet. There was a time in my early career when every other pair of curtains were probably velvet so I had lots of practice making it up. Very occasionally I've charged more for other fabrics, usually slippery cheap synthetics as they don't make up very well 😬

    Do you always interline your blinds? And what interlining are you using? It looks a lot thinner than the one I use for curtains. Also if you were using blackout for curtains would you use the same method and have four layers of fabric?

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom Місяць тому

      Hi there, I use different linings and interlining for different jobs depending on the finish required. I usually use bonded interlining, but I didn't have any in stock when the client made a late change, so I had to use separate layers, which totalled 4 instead of the usual 3. However, not all are blackout lined, and not all are even interlined, so it can vary enormously. The same goes for curtains but what I would never do is use bonded interlining in curtains. Normally the interlining in curtains varies from std synthetic to the heavy weight cotton bump.

    Does this work for dog scratches on a velvet sofa? What if I don’t have a matching fabric?

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 24 дні тому

      Hi there. I'm so sorry for the delay replying, I missed your comment originally. It certainly can work, yes. Although sometimes dog scratches can pull or some of the pile to leave a little bald strip or leave the pile threads at different lengths which at hide to correct, so it depends how bad the scratches are tbh. If you don't have any of the same velvet you can use any piece of velvet but you MUST make sure the colour won't transfer. A light colour is best. You could also use a microfiber cloth or even one of those velvety lint removers. Good luck.

    This tutorial is wonderful, so much detail, love it! Thank you Justine. I’m about to embark on sewing sheer wave curtains for many windows in my house, so I have a few questions regarding sheer fabric curtains, as I have never sewed curtains or used sheer fabric. 1. Does a hidden stitch wave header work best for sheer fabric curtains with no lining? 2. Do you still need to add a stiffener tape (or wide fusing tape) at the top, similar to how you used the buckram for a clean crisp header finish? 3. What style hem would you suggest be stitched down the sides, the fabric already has a manufactured weighted hem, at the bottom, I was thinking French hem? Would love a tutorial on any type of sheer curtain. Thankyou for sharing your wisdom around the world. (An Aussie, who loves watching your videos.)

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 2 місяці тому

      Hi there down under 👋 and thank you for your lovely comments. Hidden stitch Wave works very well on sheer fabrics with no lining and the method is pretty much the same. Just make sure you allow enough fabric at the top to wrap around the buckram twice so that it runs down the back and back up the front inside.

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 2 місяці тому

      You could try it without any buckram in the top if the sheer is very light but tbh, it's better with some sort of stiffener. If you don't have access to buckram a heavy weight Vilene works well.

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 2 місяці тому

      I find a simple 1" (2.5cm) double turned hem for the edges is ideal for sheers. Not sure why you would do a French hem unless you were adding a trim to the edges..... or the meaning of a French hem is different for you. Hope this helps 😊👍

    Cannot express how much I appreciate this video! I’m a complete beginner and every tip has been stellar. I’ve been dreaming of black and white suede curtains, and I’m so much closer to that dream being a reality, so thank you!! 🥹 After watching this several times (and after several prototypes), I’ve gotten to a nice near-end product. I’m struggling with one thing though… when I go to see what the curtain looks like on the hooks, the face fabric seems to pull away from the lining and it ends up sagging down, and I’m not sure what step I’m missing. I’m hoping for a pure hidden stitch, but I may just need to sew a line to bind the face fabric and tape together… any thoughts to what I may be overlooking? Thank you in advance 🥺

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 2 місяці тому

      Are you adding buckram? If so, is it fusible on both sides? When you hang the curtains are you intruding the Wave effect or just hanging it flat? The permanent Wave status gives the heading structure so it needs to be tested like that. Are you also using a track/pole with Wave system gliders?

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 3 місяці тому

      Ah OK, that makes more sense. It sounds like the timing is out so it's hitting the wrong part of the bobbin case (rotary hook) underneath rather than the gap in the bobbin case. It is possible to reset the timing but it involves loosening the screws that hold the bobbin case in place and they can be a bit tricky to get to. You'll need to remove the plate and the feed dogs. You then need to position the needle in the right place before re-positioning the bobbin case so that the rotary hook is lunged up with the middle of the needle. If you're able to click this link it'll take you to the manual with a description of how to set the timing. www.manualslib.com/manual/482501/Brother-Db2-B755.html?page=12#manual

    Hi, I've been trying to remove the plate but the screw is not moving, any recommendations? I've sprayed a bit of DW40 to loosen the screw but no joy

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 3 місяці тому

      Hi there, and thank you for your comment. It can be a real challenge getting those screws out, not least because it's hard to get a screwdriver in the slot completely straight. That also makes it difficult to turn the screw which can often lead to damage of the screw head. I recommend using a long screwdriver making sure it has a good sharp end. Also make sure it's not too small and fits the head of the screw snuggly. WD40 can help but it needs a bit of time to work it's way in so maybe add a little each day and give it time to penetrate then clean the WD40 off before you try again to undo the screw. You could also try putting the screwdriver in place and then hitting the top of it with a hammer. This can both re-establish a good slot for the screwdriver and 'crack' the threads of the screw in the hope that it loosens slightly. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Justine

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 3 місяці тому

      Well.... most custom-made Roman blinds would be dry cleaned, so shrinkage isn't a problem. If, however you propose to wash the blind then yes, make it wider and you may want to use a different stiffening material in the return as that may not wash very well either.

    Would this work on a silk/rayon velvet jacket that is dry clean only but was put in the wash? It looks like crushed velvet now which I hate, it previously was a smooth velvet jacket.

    • @WindmillCurtainRoom
      @WindmillCurtainRoom 3 місяці тому

      Oh blimey, this seems to happen a lot with velvet jackets. In principal, yes it should work very well but I would suggest testing a little bit that isn't that visible first and don't use too much heat as rayon can be quite sensitive. It may be a bit tedious to get it all done but it should certainly improve it. Good luck 🤞
