Keepers of one of the last matriarchal societies in the world, Mosuo women in a remote area of southwest China live beyond the strictures of mainstream Chinese culture - enjoying great freedoms and carrying heavy responsibilities. Beautifully shot and featuring intimate interviews, this short documentary offers a rare glimpse into a society virtually unheard of 10 years ago and now often misrep...

May Taliban insects suffer in hell for eternity
I'm curious as to why this was a surprise. The previous administration's deal with the Taliban called for US withdrawal by early May. That was know for many months. It is heartbreaking that this site is likely to be erased. I suspect the Chinese copper mine nearby will be full steam ahead now.
It was a surprise in that it happened overnight without letting Afghans know about it. The US withdrawal happened so suddenly and was terribly mismanaged abandoning and betraying the Afghans who worked with the US.
Save Mes Aynak.
Thank you, Brent, for sharing this story and perspective, that many people may not realize to consider.

Hi. Can you give us an update about the site. This looks absolutely precious ..
The film is now complete - just google Saving Mes Aynak to see it!
“There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery.”
Buddhism was destroyed by Islam. Westerners like you should just keep quiet and LEARN about Buddhism, not try and teach it.
the buddha existed in Bamyan during the muslim time except for when the taliban came so dont blame all and China is not a blessed country at all!
For more info, please check out The Buddhas of Mes Aynak on Facebook.
I wish, I could be there help digging and saving the the site....
The Taliban already attacked the site multiple times - they have fire rockets into the concession area, close to where the workers are housed. It became so dangerous that most of the Chinese workers were pulled out for a while and only returned when increased presence of Afghan security forces made the area safer. I think MCC should revise their plans and abandon the open pit excavation plan they initially had.
I know that the site is safe for now until at least the end of 2014. This is because MCC (the company owning the concession) has adopted a wait-and-see attitude - they do not want to sink more money building infrastructure and start excavations if Afghanistan is going to slide into war again after the ISAF leaves. However, if open fighting does occur, then the site might come under threat from the Taliban, since Logar was a Taliban stronghold (Aynak even had Al-Qaeda training camps).
Buddha is not China's god per se - Buddhism is simply one of the many streams of religious thought that has prominence in Chinese culture. At the core, most Chinese are Confucians. They might then be Buddhists, while also practicing other religions such as Taoism, and then on top of that monotheistic religions such as Christianity or (more rarely) Islam. I think one reason for the lack of objection from Chinese is that they are not informed about it - the state media there does not report it.
China knows alot of their people will die trying to take the copper i guess they dont care about their people
its true the Taliban are bad people and without them our country could be a better place but after finding out the Chinese are going to do this to my home i want to protect it with force. if that makes me apart of Taliban so be it.
im a muslim and i dont know what happend ages ago with the muslims and Buddhists and what their goal was but now why is china destroying a part of their own and our history over some money. think about it the chinese who dig the copper out will eventually die and after living a rich life the money will be passed on to their family members, eventually they will die too at the end there will be no money and no history of Afghanistan or Buddhists. i thought budda was their god why distroy ur god?
Buddha was never a god. He's just a enlightenment one. The most important thing he taught us was middle way.
