Comparison: Berg Larson, Retro revival Fla., Morgan Fry Lg. Chamber, Ted Klum London

I just acquired a vintage Berg Larson refaced to 110/2 by Doc Tenney, a fantastic Morgan Fry Rhodium Large Chamber 8*, and have added my other favorites to the mix… a great playing off the shelf Retro Revival Florida Super D 8, and a spectacular bare brass (with my antiqued finish) Ted Klum London Precision 8. In this recording I’m playing all 4 played using the same Ishimori Woods-tone 3 reed,...

Nice backdrop. Great sound.
Wow! Thanks - and yes Roland was amazing!
I studied saxophone at VCU with Roland, he was head and shoulders above the rest of us. Amazing command of the instrument. Thank you for sharing this, it brought back memories!
❤❤
Had one a couple years ago, it worked really well, But they absolutely will ruin your day if you pull it around the yard and you DONT latch the lid down,
Beautiful articulation, beautiful harmonics, just old fashioned tenor madness! Happy with aged 40-50 years cane. I may try a two Venn for heck of it! Synthetics used to make lip bleed 40 years ago.
Thanks, but I’m no longer playing synthetic because it cuts into my lip too much. Playing BSS Silver cane. Also, no longer playing either of those mouthpieces, now I alternately use Klum London Precision and RR Florida.
I think it's all you ! Very subtle difference with those pieces. Bravo
Can you tell me more about those WALL SAXOPHONE HOLDERS? Thank you.
What a great sound you have, could listen all day to you my friend!!!
Sounds excellent !
I prefer the Link. It's got warmth, depth and richness and makes me want to sip on a 12 years old Scotch and enjoy a good cigar. The Lawton is very nice too but more clear and crispy. Not as layered as the Link though. Somehow the Klum is the least appealing to me. I am missing some mid core in the sound.
Link and Lawton!
Nice. Would love to hear it without all the reverb. 👍🎷
Sound nice and dark n beautiful
Do you use Pam or something like grape seed oil?
You guys sound great.
Thanks!
That Lawton 9 sounded great BUT it really was a chop and wind hog!
You must have chops of steel. I can't use synthetic reeds at all.
@@dangutwein Yea, they do run stiff. I currently have a Venn G2, 2.5. It sounds good when I can hold it together. It wears my chops out. I may try another one, lower strength. But at $30 a pop, I'm in no hurry.
@@dangutwein I agree and may try another one soon. Several years ago, I had one that I used for 4 years with a Berg Larsen mouthpiece. It was pure gold. I damaged on a gig one night and never found another that worked quite as well.
I just discovered that the Venn reed works great with my Vandoren metal V16
You sound great on all three. I do like the second one you played the best, the Lawton.
Otto link the best
I'm liking this!
Wow. You guys had me at about 5 seconds in.
I got a link and a Lawton should I get a Ted klum which sound really nice
Thanks for this video Dan! I'm heavily considering picking up a 9 for myself that I found on a website. Im only worried the tip opening is too big, I currently play on a 7**. Any advice?
Kamado not Komodo
All Nice ! the Link
Gorgeous and captivating........many thumbs up!!!
For me the Ted Klum had a sharper response giving it more flexibility and it also had great projection throughout the ranges.
Thank you!
The Ted Klum is sexy
As a past student of Joe Allard and othe notables, and as an astute individual, I enjoy seeing/hearing an older person laying it down. The Link and Lawton have integrity and character, they enhance your playing. The other one.......don't.
Prefer the Otto Link!
Hello, could you help me choose a mouthpiece Otto link stm? such as yours Thank you!my email nickmiro777@gmail.com
I am siding with the Lawton, closely followed by Klum's New London.
Great video. This akorns can really get away from you fast and they hold temps amazingly well. Start slow and don’t let it get away from ya. Cherrs
What lig are you using on the Klum ?
Frida is a actual MPC o vintage? Good sound thank
The Link & Lawton could be considered vintage.
Nice comparison video, and great sound on all of these!
Ted Klum!!!!!!
yo tengo una 8**BB para tenor hace 25 años, no la cambio por nada. bañada en oro
Hey man, thinking of getting the lawton. do you think i should get it in bronze or stainless steel?
Remy Dharmaraj I can only recommend the pieces that were made by Geoff Lawton, and they’re rare vintage pieces in great demand and you probably won’t have the luxury of getting one of those in the tip and chamber you want as well as the material too! I haven’t owned or played any of the pieces made by his son Jason that are currently available for retail sale. I’ve heard that he, Jason Lawton is not the master craftsman that his father Geoff Lawton was.
@@apistosig4173 incorrect. I have both and the difference is clear. In fact I regret getting the Jason. I was OK with the Goef only the tip was too small
@@MrObadee2000 thanks for that - very interesting
what places do you recommend to try/purchase a Geoff Lawton Steel Tenor mouthpiece? Thx. (sounds great)
John Sterling from The Jazz Hole - New ones are made by his son and are readil available retail and online. Vintage ones made by Geoff are hard to fine. I bought mine from a friend and since I posted this, I sold it and have been switching mouthpieces several times in the unending search for “greener grass on the other side”
@@dangutwein Thanks Dan! I will keep looking and in the meantime practice I guess. :) Do you have a specific source/shop you recommend as a starting point? I got my 6 from USA Horn many years ago and after seeing James Carter recently wanted to try the Lawton.
Great sound! I like tone of Ottlink. But as you have your own tone, mouthpieces do not give the fundamental effect.
The timbre of each mouthpiece is significantly different. Don’t confuse style, playing attitude, the effect of the overall performance, the musicality, with tone color. This is not to say that those things are not important. It is not to say that tone color is not important either. Generic terms such as “fundamental effect” aren’t meaningful without breaking them down into components.
I've got the exact same mouthpiece. Mine's working best with Hemke 2 1/2. Thanks for sharing.
Is this just a vamp or a named piece ??? thanks.
Ed Schoeb - It’s definitely a named piece, but Rog players it as part of what I call a rock surfer medley. Rog would know. Just copy the link to this and ask him via Messenger.
Roger, it was a pleasure to re-connect with you after 38 freakin years!!! You and your posse swing daddy.....love it!!
Benzel from Parlament Funkadelic on drums!!!!
I know those dudes....
Awesome
That slide-in D# @ 1:03 just blows me away. Like a sign saying," Hold my Wine and watch what's coming in the next few bars." lol. GOD I LUV IT !!!
