Graham Irwin - In The Pines - with lyrics in the description

A traditional song from the southern Appalachian area of America.
There are numerous variations of the song and several titles, including: Black Girl, My Girl, Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Some versions are an amalgam of this song and another entitled The Longest Train.
In 1964 the British pop group The Four Pennies had a chart his with a version of the song under the title Black Girl. However, perhaps the most well-known versions are those by Lead Belly, and Nirvana.
Image: Mountain Pines by Alexandre Calame, 1840, etching on chine collé
LYRICS:
Hey girl, hey girl, don't you lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night.
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And I shivered the whole night long.
Tell me where did you get them high-tone shoes
And the dress that you where so fine.
I got the shoes from an engineer
And the dress from a man down the line.
Her husband was a railroad man
Killed a mile and a half from town.
They found his head 'neath the driving wheels
But his body ain't never been found.
Repeat first verse

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking
👍🏻. Thanks Graham for recording and keeping these traditional old songs from being lost forever👏🏻❤️
Thank you, Carole. It is a lovely song.
I wish I'd found this sooner. What a beautiful version. I particularly love the chorus
Thank you. I'm glad you like it <3
I recognise the accent of irwin. Well done. I remember the old 12 string acoustic you had from 50 years ago!
Thank you. And I still have the old guitar!
Nice.
Thank you!
Beautiful song and well sung too. However, very, and I can stress this enough, _very_ unfortunate use of Ai for the image, however. That is baaaad practice, and I urge you to refrain from abusing that most amoral of technologies
Great description and song thanks for taking the time to explain
Many thanks! I'm glad you liked it. 😀
Thanks for the memories, retired postie
Thank you. It's a great job!
Great song! Thank you for it!
Thank you 😃
What an amazing masterpiece 😍👏
Thank you for your kind words.
It really has nothing to do with 'a pagan fertility rite'. This is a May Day Garland custom as would have been found all over England - with added hobby-horses (they probably originally came out at Christmas but moved to May at some point in the late 18th century).
Well done C B.
Was looking for a video with lyrics thanks for posting them
Glad you found it! 😀

Thank you, Lumbani!
Well sung Graham, if it was me singing I’d need to wear tight underpants to get the registers you do…. All the best from sunny Stretford,Manchester UK
🤣 Thank you, Paul. I appreciate your comment!
hello; I am writing a folklorist's report upon the submerged bells, and I would like to cite your work as an example of contemporary interests. are the lyrics available any where?
Hi. I'm not aware that the lyrics have been published anywhere, but I will PM you.
Thanks Graham! This will be a great addition to our playlist for our senior/assisted living gigs.
Thank you, Keith. I'm glad you like it.
what state is this?
Umbria, Italy
Wow!😍
:)
Love this Graham.😍
Thanks, Carole xx
From what I understand this album contains a song "Mister Major." I heard Dave perform this song in a club back in '79. I can NOT find this song posted ANYWHERE. If someone reads this, has this album, and can PLEASE post this song I would really appreciate it...if only for reviving an old memory. Thanks!
You might find someone with information for you on mudcat.org
One night when travelling sheep, my companions lay asleep There was not a star illuminate the sky I was dreaming I suppose, for my eyes were partly closed When a very strange procession passed me by First there came a kangaroo with a swag of blankets blue A dingo ran beside him as his mate They were travelling mighty fast but they shouted as they passed We'll have to jog along, it's getting late The pelican and the crane they came in from off the plain To amuse the company with a Highland fling The dear old bandicoot played a tune upon his flute And the native bears sat round him in the ring The drongo and the crow sang us songs of long ago The frilled necked lizard listened with a smile The emu standing near with his claw up to his ear Said, Funniest thing I've heard for quite a while Well The frogs from out the swamp where the atmosphere is damp Came bounding in and sat upon the stones For They each unrolled their swags and produced from little bags The violin, the banjo and the bones The goanna and the snake and the adder wide awake With an alligator danced The Soldier's Joy In the spreading silky oak the jackass cracked a joke And the magpie sang The Wild Colonial Boy Some brolgas darted out from the tea-tree all about And performed a set of lancers very well The parrot green and blue gave the orchestra its cue To strike up The Old Log Cabin in the Dell I was dreaming I suppose, for these entertaining shows But it never crossed my mind I was asleep Till the boss beneath the cart woke me up with such a start Yelling, Prithee me, tell me where are all your sheep. These are the lyrics I learned. Can't really say what's right with these old ballads, but this one feels more Australian with references to more Aussie wildlife and the old language. Nice singing anyway.
Thanks!
This is lovely...
Thank you
Hope all goes well for her at the vets Graham🙏🏼🐾❤️
Thank you, Carole xx
Glad to hear this gentle rendering of a great trad English song I've not heard since I myself was a boy - did it use to introduce a BBC radio farming programme too? Maybe that was The Curly- Headed Ploughboy, anyway, thanks, and for the print lyrics. I had holiday jobs on market gardens and used to think of this in all sorts of condtions- planting spring cabbage in the heat, sickling round young Xmas trees in the wet, heaving grain sacks and sweeping elevators.
Thank you, Andy. It's one of those songs that I seem to have known for as long as I can remember. Maybe it was from a radio programme in the days of yore! lol
Very nice. Maddy Prior should be paying you royalties.
Thank you Bill. If only ... lol
Luvvit
Graham my husband used to play and sing this to me in the 60’s. Thank you. Brought back poignant memories.💕

Hey, whats the chords?
C, D, G and I think that’s an A7 but I am not sure on that one.
Hey John. I've added the chords to the lyrics. Hope that helps! :)
I met his wife over here several years ago she was on holiday. She introduced us to transcendental meditation!
You've just reminded me I met Donovan once, many, many years ago. He came into the store where I worked asking if we had any Victorian pennies in the till. :)
Fun Graham thank you! 🍥
Thank you, Sue :)
