Let's Talk about Delta-8 with Dr. Matt Rossheim
My guest for this episode is Dr. Matt Rossheim! Dr. Rossheim is an Associate Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and a leading researcher on the impact of drug policy on public health, particularly as it relates to teenagers and young adults. The past several years he's turned his attention to derived intoxicating cannabis products, the most common of which is Delta-8 THC, and the tactics that the industry has used to market to youth and evade effective regulation.
I talk with Dr. Rossheim about a range of topics from his recent research, including:
- How do derived intoxicating cannabis products differ from traditional cannabis products?
- What products are the most common semi-synthetics? And which are the most concerning from a health perspective?
- How are these products marketed to consumers, and are there particular groups that appear to be targeted?
- What tactics are commonly used in industry-funded studies to spread misinformation about intoxicating substances? And how can we keep industry honest?
- Given the lack of regulation, is there any way to purchase these types of products safely? And where can someone go for reliable information?
And more!
To get in touch and learn more about Dr. Rossheim, visit his website at www.unthsc.edu/college-of-public-health/dr-matthew-rossheim/

On the latest episode of Let’s Talk, Dr. Garland and I discuss the psychotherapy he’s developing called MORE - Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement. MORE is a psychotherapy specifically designed (and being validated) for treating opioid use disorder (OUD). This is more rare than you might think: most gold-standard addiction psychotherapies (like CBT) show far less efficacy for treating OUD...

Addiction Psychologist explains FDA Vape / Vuse decision
Your presentation was excellent. It was the first time I've seen one focused on an adult audience. I'm a mindfulness facilitator in schools and with younger children, we add the idea of a small caterpillar climbing up each finger as if they were leaves.
Parker Park
Did the cali sober thing for years while on methadone. I don't consider methadone part of Cali sober but i only smoked weed. It's best to be completely sober no weed, nothing. Been over a year of no weed and it's a game changer.
happy to be a guest anytime to talk about local prevention efforts, etc!
My husband didn't smoke but when the vapes came out he started using one. He even has nicotine added to it because he thought it would help his anxiety. Now about 8yrs later he has no desire to stop it no matter what I say.
Your husband is an adult, the reason this vape ban is being pushed is “think of the kids”. Some politician found her kid with a vape now all of us have to suffer
Nicotine is not that physically addictive.
How to bay
I've been on just prescribed suboxone and weed for 4 years, I don't even think about opioids anymore, even though suboxone is technically one, its not a drug that gets me high.
Works for some, worked for me on methadone and just smoking weed for years. Still stuck on methadone though, havn't smoked weed or anything else for a year.
An actually very helpful, science based, and non-moralizing take. Thanks for this! What I needed to hear today :)
Thanks for your thoughts! I'm glad you found it helpful 👍
@weinerphd Convinced me to ask someone to be my sponsor and not return to smoking all my nights away, haha. I'm meeting with him tomorrow morning, so we'll see how it goes.
Immediate difference!
I'm just finding about California sober and didn't realize alcohol was included. There's nothing sober about that.
Do not stand up while doing this!!! Sit down or lay somewhere
Why?
Thank you so much!
Didn't realize that for her "cali sober" included alcohol, which is a hard drug. Ridiculous. I have never been addicted to anything but still use the term to specifically describe my rejection of alcohol and other hard drugs for weed only, which I genuinely do believe to not be very harmful. Still wouldn't advocate it for kids. Cheers.
Great interview!!! I just watched episode 1 (The Spark) yesterday!!! Absolutely mind boggling the effect this industry has had and continues to have on our teens our country and the world.
Thanks for the feedback Rodney! I know - it's incredible...it's amazing what just 6 months of advertising can do when you're funded and your intent is to make it go viral
Mmj can be dangerous for people with mental health conditions, but this woman wrote a paper claiming mmj killed her son. This is an incredibly controversial, and frankly after reading her story insanely unethical, stance to take. In her, God knows how she got it peer reviewed, paper she does not list any of the other factors in determining a cause for suicide (family history genetic or personal, failures of mental health professionals to adequately treat his issues and most importantly wether her political and social stances had negative effects on her children. Frankly as someone who uses mmj for medically caused nausea and has seen it effect others negatively I was hoping to find real research on the topic. I wonder what causes a publisher form the deep south might have to publish something clearly political and unscientific in nature? There's no red state blue state bs in our country is there? Noone from MO has an interst in dunking on mmj for political purposes? Come on. I'll take a listen but I suspect Karen who thinks she's a scientist. Using your sons death as a political jumping off point is fing low.
Tried to listen, this is a fox news interview for 40 minutes. Def not for me.
I’m glad I came across this comment because I was thinking the same thing. I was doing my own research on cannabis and dabs and came across her article which stood out on PubMed because of its very unprofessional “article like” title, for lack of better words. In reading it, there were tons of accusations and claims with no basis, no proof, no studies, no surveys, I mean literally nothing, it read like a Facebook post. I can’t see how she possibly god such an article peer reviewed and on PUBMED
Two weiners having a discussion . . .
Thanks for explaining
And all these bans and junk regulations are getting getting pushed through at the state and federal level while theyre legalizing marajuana at the state level in multiple states. "Lets demonize Nicotine"(shown to be neural protective) while legalizing THC(the vape that actually made all those kids sick a few years back, they were to scared to admit that to mommy/daddy and the local news) so they all cried that nicotine vapes made them sick
Also authorized devices only owned (atleast partly) by big tobacco companys theyre killing an industry when they could have made a law only allowing vape shops to sell the products because lil Jimmy,Bobby,Billy and Mandy aren't getting their disposables from a vape shop theyre getting it from gas stations and bodegas that have no problem selling to people under 18/21
"Open the door a crack and you may get a flood" sounds like the perfect analogy of the FDA and vaping regulations. Its aggravating they still say thing like youth smoking/vaping epidemic(you know because a focus group responded most to that phrasing). Kids are always going to rebel/partake in risky behavior wouldnt it be safer if they used products that are proven to be 95% less harmful than smoking, also most of the people ive talked to mention how its easier to quit vaping than smoking. On the other hand i do believe they shouldnt be vaping 50mg salt nic if they were never a smoker. Vaping also tends to be much much less expensive than smoking which can help people save money and attain a better quality of life, i can vape all month for the price of a pack of cigarettes if youre just starting it'll cost a bit more because you'll need a device which thanks to our lovely goverment will cost you more than it would have a year or 2 ago
I'm sorry about your loss. But your opiins are not fact. Marijuana does not cause schizophrenia. Or any of your claims. Clearly hecwas on something else or had underlying conditions. You tried to cure something that's not addictive and brainwashed him which caused him to give up.
Brilliant and common sense. Pot smoking was a gateway dope road for me that ruined a great music career in country bluegrass. The lyrics are clear in the Billy Strings/Wille Nelson version. The term "California Sober" has been around a long long time. Its clearly indicating that smoking dope is a break in hard liquor use. But the final verse makes it clear she fell off the wagon numerous times and the devil always wins meaning she has lost the will and hope in life. I truly hope Billy Strings disent go down the road always traveled and ruined many great legions. Some made it, most did not!
Weed is definitely a gateway drugs. I knew a lot of people who were smoking weed in the late 70s and early 80s who eventually started smoking crack.
What if your kid-friendly logic is wrong? Seeing that risen teen use correlates with the eradication of smoking (more harmful & addictive), is *all* youth NVP use non-beneficial? And if the magic deterrence from synthetic "tobacco" flavours doesn't hold true, wouldn't you actually be lobbying for smoking habituation?
Thoughts off the cuff are that smoking rates were in steady decline since the late 90s, long before the advent of vaping. Data also points towards kids who vape being 3-4x more likely to initiate smoking in the next 12 months, as well as vaping itself having carcinogens, lipids, and numerous toxic chemicals. We don't need vaping to keep kids off tobacco - they were doing that already. Statistically speaking, vaping actually makes it more likely we'll see a rise in teen smoking again, not less.
@@weinerphd Is cohort overlap the same as causation? The gateway hypothesis sort of seems to be less of a fear, and more like a fetish at this point. Some people seem so married to that idea, they almost seem to desire it. (Doesn't look like just a lobbying pretext anymore; given the observable outcomes of moving teens off of substitutes.)

Everyone has to draw their own line in the sand as far as what sobriety means to them. I personally don't think people are as sober as they lead on, particularly while they smoke/vape nicotine, and ingest caffeine. Both are mood altering substances correct?
When you've been in therapy for years, tried all the medications, and yet nothing works and this is all you feel you can turn to. Psychedelics truly are a life saver. Lsd saved my life when nothing else could and for that I'm truly grateful. It taught me how to love myself for all my flaws, it taught me how to teach others to love themselves. And it's been teaching me how to be a better person. Truly these tools must be utilized, but that isn't to say that they don't have their downsides. My sense of self has been fractured, I've been laced and caught addictions, I've had to deal with real psychosis (mental hospital type beat) thanks to this stuff yet I truly wouldn't be here without it. Just know that the reason people self medicate with this stuff is because they are tired of being a victim of their own circumstance and they want a change in perspective. These are the perfect tools to give that change, and in fact they are the only tools that have actually worked (for me at least).
The problem is that "vuse" is put out by a big tobacco company. We should be able to look at history and see where that will lead.
Thank you for this video. Sam Quinones has a message about the "new meth", i.e. P2P meth so-called; yet very few people understand the importance of this message. Let me start with some preliminaries. My son (1993-2019) became a meth user. His behavior was such that I thought he had been sniffing airplane glue or solvents (huffing). But his problem was primarily meth. The meth subculture is full of experts of deception; there is no group of people whose individuals are so prone to tell a lie, even if it is a bald-faced lie: that is, catching someone using a drug then having the person vehemently, even aggresively defending the lie even in the face of irrefutable evidence. My son's mother and I (we are separated since he was very young) both suffered through several years of my son's meth addiction, and didn't know what to do. He spent several months in jail and was jailed several times. The financial impact alone of that was horrendous: lawyer's fees, bail bonds, fines, the cost of an ignition interlock, and the usuric fees charged to make a phone call to an incarcerated loved one. Not to mention basic support, for due to his addiction, he could not hold a job long and any extra money went to drugs. Christmas presents or other gifts were sold for drugs. When my son was brought into court, I saw him in leg irons and manacles. Sometimes he was sent to "rehab", which as far as I can tell only served to placate the court and give my son eighteen days away from access to the drug. 12-step programs were, though promoted to some extent, ineffective, because meth users are too paranoid, and too know-it-all, to reach the level of humility required. Outpatient treatment requirements, another financial burder for the parents, was seen by my soon as an obligation only. The fact was, he just wanted to get through the legal requirements in order to be out in the world again where meth was universally available at affordale prices. One of his girlfriends, a few years ago, chose meth over safety, sanity, and security, and is now most likely in a tent encampment where she can get more of this poisonous substance to inject into her veins, though she doesn't know what is in the drug she prepares for the syringe. My son became increasingly dishonest, unruly, and even violent, though he had been brought up by two pacifists who do not ever resort to violence to decide issues. The P2P meth made him insane. This was complicated by benzodiazepine use, chiefly Klonopin, on which he overdosed at least twice (that I witnessed; I assume there were other overdoses). My son died three years ago in July. He was driving a motorcycle and while attempting to outrun the police, who wished to pull him over for reckless driving or speeding, he went off the road at high speed, hit a tree, and died, on the weekend of July 28, 2019. At his funeral was his ex-girlfriend (with her daugher- so I knew she was temporarily straight and was allowed visitation). So that was in August 2019. Eight months later she came to see me and we became involved again. But she would come to see me, and then disappear for months. The call of the drug, and the lifestyle of doing whatever was necessary to get the drug, was too strong. I assume, now, she will either die of a drug overdose or from some drug-related cause, or will continue as a prostitute until she completely loses her looks, and then still continue, for there are men who will pay any woman, no matter how sick she is or how desperate, in order to have sex. That is a whole other issue. A year ago she came to see me. She had been living in a tent encampment. She had nothing, not a phone, not a dime; nothing. She slept for two days here and then went back to the drug world. Believe me, having meth as a rival for your affections is a losing proposition for any man. A woman on meth is enslaved by, and devoted to, the drug, to a degree which no man however decent and good can overcome. P2P meth is a drug straight from hell. My whole life is grief now for what meth did to my son and to other people who I met as a result of his addiction. Thank you, Sam Quinones, and keep up the good work.
