Check your cam position sensor. It is a cheap fix. Also take the care to your local Auto Parts shop and ask them to hook up the code reader to it. You can google the trouble codes. I replaced the cam position sensor and the knock sensor and my Son's neon runs like a dream now. 186,000 miles and she still runs like new. Use Mobile 1 5W-30 fully synthetic oil. It will fix a ton of engine vibrations, noises and rough idle. YES oil can make a huge difference! Trust me on that.

hey my neon does the same thing did you find out what it was? i think mine is an alternator problem. but check your exhaust, sounds like its kinda loud, leak, or aftermarket, because if its a bad leak back pressure will not be correct and could cause sputtering, if not tended to
