    Wow...who made that giant Masonic chopper...does that say "Shaw & Sons"? I have two big 8/8 Greaves wedges that look very similar!

  • @Master...deBater
    @Master...deBater 25 днів тому

    Hi Joseph. Nice little stubtail. I need to draw upon your vast knowledge and exposure to vintage Sheffield razors. I have a beautiful early stubtail that I need help identifying. It's an 8/8 wedge with a spine thickness just shy of 1/4". The shape is similar to your Rutherford but with more swoop to the spine and blade. The maker's mark is either: G.R , Q.R , G.B , Q.B...over "BEST.STEEL". I'm guessing G.R for George Rex which would fit stylistically its likely production period prior to 1820. It still has its original nearly straight (just a hint of swoop) cow horn scales. Below is my best attempt at recreating the primitive stamp. Any help would be greatly appreciated...as I've been trying unsuccessfully to ID this blade for almost a decade now! Thanks for all your great content! G.R BEST.STEEL

      Could it be G.P for George Palmer No.1 st. James's? He used the G.R Crown. I read that his razors were actually made by John & William Ragg. Food food for thought.

    I use glycerin and water on my Arks as well. Acts like oil but without the mess! the last 50 strokes per bevel, I use dish soap and water with light pressure. A trick my father taught me 40-some-odd years ago. Leaves a very crisp edge...and cleans the stone at the same time.

    Great skill to shave with that little blade. How fiddly was that? Making your own razors sounds challenging for sure, not to say pretty expensive too. Are you planning only wedges or will you have a bash at framebacks too? Best of luck, T

    • @EdgeDynamicsEnglishRazors
      @EdgeDynamicsEnglishRazors 2 місяці тому

      Hi, These stones are sedimentary and can be unstable to a degree. Sealing the stone stops water from soaking in at the sides and it also creates a protective case. Untreated, pressure at the sides can cause layers to separate. Thanks
