3rd baron gisborough is apparently still alive according to Wikipedia as of Oct 2024. Amazingly he was only 41 in this documentary!! Fun fact: Wikipedia says he was the only peer who was a peer at both Elizabeth ii accession and Charles iii accession.
The REAL laugh is that today the Town of Palm Beach is flooded with new money poseurs. The really sophisticated rich of old money wouldn't go near the current ilk of the Town of Palm Beach.
Birth control and a virtual lack of STD's while the few could all be treated. Yea, our parents/grandparents had it made.
I felt almost sorry for Lord Faversham having to write his novels in a Dorick temple that was under a low flight path...
Robert-Jean de Voguë 1896 - 1976
Remarkable piece of history.
A really noisy program, hardly worth watching at all - and with that arrogant "here I come" Mr. Wickers.
Wow, this is how they used to make tv programmes its in a different universe to the Crxp on tv these days. Whicker was a legend at these types of programmes. Thanks to property prices the aristocracy is still thriving and these people's children are still at the helm of the estates. Accents have definately got less posh over the years. This programme would never have been made 10 years preciously say 1958. Then no one questioned the the authority of the ruling classes. The 60s changed all that.
That's probably the most fascinating episode I've seen. There should have been very much more of it! Girlies accent is so interesting, being able to pick out whole phrases in a thick west country accent that abruptly go north and then softer tahian sounds. What a treasure. I wish he'd done more, met more people. Such a long way to go!
Of course, he might not have been "hunted all his life" if he hadn't kept robbing trains and banks...
My father was at Anzio, captured with thousands of others, and ended up in Stalag IVb near the River Elbe. I so wish he could have seen this. He died in 1997.
This is only half of the documentary. I have the DVD and there are two discs. Please post the rest!
"straight-laced, catholic city" as an Austrian living in Vienna, I vehemently disagree. Vienna is basically the NYC of the German-speaking world.
Whicker is a legend l am seeing this for the second time in my crumbling palazzo which is ten or so miles from the British landing beaches on Sicily, which happened six years to the day before my birth in Britain, Yet the crowds on the street below my window at nearly midnight look and sound almost exactly like the jostling sociable Sicilians shown in this film. It s a reaffirmation of the Allied sacrifice and the blessings of peace won by that blood donation and the testament to the spirit of Whicker.
You might think that the store detectives might remember the female shoplifter who draws her eyebrows down the inside of her nose! They're pretty distinctive! 😂 Nine children ! I wonder what happened to them all.
Very good documentary. Well doneSir
Alan Wicker was the best documentary maker of his time. I watched everything of his that I could get my eyes on. This, I thought was one of his best. It took some balls.
Fabulous...I am watching this at my palazzo in Sicily ....a temporary late, late life gift ...I am as old as Wicker is in this marvellous documentary meanwhile making my own and comparing and admiring of his talents .
Class.
That German princess speaks the most amazing English.
I know for the name of free speech and exposure to the media, I get all of that but the interviewer is like really annoying and too disrespectful to the Sultan.
I saw the rubble on my first flying visit in 1968. My favourite French town.
NB When Victoria Farris (inventor and organ player) died in 1985 he left wife Celia $100 million.
This is more or less as shown in tv series Palm Royale (wonderful, for most of its length, do watch it.) The rich at play is a hugely entertaining spectacle. And fancy the Duke and Windsor charging $4000 to attend your party. (That is huge, converted in today’s money.) That was new to me.
It makes sense his family hated the Nazis. Who likes competition?
“Why do you believe that Thai women make such good business men ?” Reference to lady boys ?
Grace Robbins, the second wife of Harold Robbins, wrote a memoir titled Cinderella and the Carpetbagger: My Life as the Wife of the “World’s Best-Selling Author”. Released in 2013, the book provides an insider’s look into their glamorous yet tumultuous life together. Harold Robbins aka Harold Rubin. The Great Deceiver.
Thank for upload. It a great video and lot helpful information for happy friend. Thank take care friend
I think this German man took advantage of this child .I find him disgusting.
looking at those grubby hands at 8:25 does make you stop & reflect for a moment. I know bacteria of *that* kind can't survive say 10% alcohol
everyone thinks they're infallible drivers, dangers always from "the other guy". What an amazing interviewer at putting his subjects at their ease to talk freely
Always Yorkshire Television
He was absoutely insane.... Untreated bipolar maniac.
Worth it just for the priceless accent
Fuck them. Americans will never understand Monarchists and Deemed "Better Than You' by mere Birthright.
When Los Angeles was like Dubai today.
I’ve always been fascinated with Haiti’s history becz my father is Haitian American, sadly my father hides his Haitian roots when he obtained his citizenship.
Robert Redford has just told us of his meeting with Lula. This is an authentic story, confirmed by him and Paul Newman during the making of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Got to admit, the French government didn't f... around !

Bummer............S
Such a lot has changed over the years. Love the wisecrack about smashed coconuts creating a Milky Way.
She is scary.....kin-ell.
I'm thinking about that show on Netflix...about that mob up in Oregon .
Absolutely captivating. It seems that this journey beckons to nearly everyone at some point in their lives. Maybe it’s something cathartic, or perhaps a deep yearning for closure. I always vowed never to traverse south of Ascension again, unlike many of my friends who have dared to make that journey. Yet, perhaps as we reach a certain age, there’s an innate compulsion to reflect upon those who were less fortunate than ourselves. Could it be that this reflection offers us a type of resolution, or perhaps a sense of peace?
This is the scene that makes you think of Monty Python.
Opening shot that is..
