How To Do The German Smear (Schmear) Brick Fireplace
This is a demonstration video of the German Smear/ German Schmear technique of our brick fireplace. You can read my blog at www.storypeaceblog.com / fun with fireplaces.
*so sorry the video soundtrack is off a few seconds on here - don't know what happened, if anyone knows how to fix, I'd appreciate a tip. My first time to post on youtube. I'm a rookie

Try taking ur time and doin it right next time. Too much white and not enough brick
this is not german smear, more like a lime or white wash....
I was gonna say the same thing!
If you let it set for 5-10 minutes after application it will be easier to take off and you will get the same look
Sheri and hubby thank you for showing this technique. I only live 40 minutes from Texas and did this to my exterior
The only thing I didn’t do is scrape or wipe off . I like it slurry
Sheri! Thank you for showing this because I love the way you did this! I did go to Texas and purchased 12 bags for my exterior brick I’ve done the back of the house, our home is 79 we bought 2 years ago and the inspector never told us about how bad our bricks and joints are. This technique saved us sooooo much money and it looks amazing! Thank you 🙏🏽
How many bags of Mortar did you use for the fire place sq ft ?
We bought two but only used 1 and half
Great job. That looks so much better.
I love it. I am trying to talk my hubby into letting us do this on our fireplace
Hi sorry just seeing this. Yes just white mortar mix type s No paint and yes comes out off white beigish hope that helps. We love it so much
Sheri Langley I am at Home Depot now. Just to confirm you did NOT add any paint/tint/coloring ❓ yours looks a pale tan or beige. THIS is exactly what I want. Thanks again! Great video
Seeing it against the white items in that area, bucket, your shirt it really is a beigey color. Unfortunately Home D. doesn’t have that brand here in Ohio! So that really added to my anxiety lol. I ended up googling a lime wash too, just painting and sponging off extra,.... I was at that store for 4 hours lol lol! Because what they had in mortar was white I purchased paint in a shade I liked. That took forever too. My color is Dutch boy called subtle Peche. So.... I am considering just adding that to the mortar or just doing a white wash or Peche wash! Uggggg
I suggest you turn off the music in the background as it drowns out your voice making it hard to understand what you are saying. Also, the screen is blacked out on either side only showing a narrow frame of video. Thanks.
Shouldn't you have started from top to bottom?
Did you add any color/tint to your "schmear"? We have perma stone siding on the bottom of our house. We'd like to make it more neutral and I think this might just work! Thanks for your video!
You forgot the bonding adhesive.
You make a great team! Easy to understand, as well explained. Thanks for sharing. :)
German for smear is schmier, not schmear.
This is the anglicized way of writing it. At least the pronunciation is spot on! :)
Best German shmear video hands down!!!
Y'all did great! And your music is the best! =)
tonya can we not?
Gorgeous!!
Great job! Thanks.
I’ve watched several videos on this technique and I really like the way yours looks! Great job and thank you for sharing!
It's a Schmiracle.
