Gen Z asks: what is school for? Plus, rebranding gentrification
It's September, which means millions of young learners across the country are dusting off their backpacks and heading back to school. But a new study from Gallup and The Walton Family Foundation has shown that students are less engaged, and feel less challenged than last year, and about half of them have no plans to get a Bachelor's degree right after high school. Host Brittany Luse is joined by Karin Klein, education reporter and author of Rethinking College: A Guide to Thriving Without a Degree (www.porchlightbooks.com/product/rethinking-college-a-guide-to-thriving-without-a-degree--karin-klein/isbn/9781400334476) , and NPR Education Desk correspondent and Senior Editor Cory Turner (www.npr.org/people/349625027/cory-turner) to parse through what has next generation feeling despondent and if we need to rethink the purpose of high school.
Then, Brittany is on the housing hunt, but she's found that even outside major urban areas, small cities across the country are rapidly gentrifying. Richard E. Ocejo, author of Sixty Miles Upriver: Gentrification and Race in a Small American City (press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691211329/sixty-miles-upriver?srsltid=AfmBOop5TyfAzcXJkikh9UIdg4VqDTJjvgzX-rGheR6hsUsjAGtThu5I) , joins Brittany to look at what happens when big city gentrifiers move to town and how some of them have rebranded gentrification.

The rise of the Pumpkin Spice Latte
Переглядів 249День тому
It's been 21 years since Starbucks debuted the first pumpkin spice latte in 2003. Since then, it's become a cultural phenomenon greater than itself: it's shorthand for fall, for basicness, for femininity, and even for white culture. In this episode from last year, we explore why the PSL became so powerful - and how food trends garner so much meaning. Host Brittany Luse chatted with Suzy Badarac...

Does 'weird' work for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?
Переглядів 37821 день тому
Ever since Minnesota governor and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz called Republicans "weird," (ua-cam.com/video/tviViJqpgpY/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared) we've seen other Democrats embrace this name-calling strategy and deploy it in interviews and in memes online. We've also seen Republicans lobbing the "weird" moniker right back at Democrats. To get into how "weird" this all is, Brit...
Code Switch: Do we need to stop using the word "felon"?
Переглядів 314Місяць тому
Ever since Vice President Kamala Harris entered the presidential race, things changed. Her campaign almost immediately started framing the election as: Harris, the former prosecutor - vs. Trump the felon. And that word - "felon" - is one that our friends over at NPR's Code Switch (www.npr.org/podcasts/510312/codeswitch) have been thinking a lot about since former President Trump was convicted o...

In the latest revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, there are no singing cats. The actors have basically ditched the furry ears and velvet tails and reimagined the characters as competitors in the ballroom scene (www.npr.org/2023/06/14/1182123852/strike-a-pose-ballroom-culture-since-the-70s) , vying for trophies and a new chance at life. The rise of the AR-15; plus, why do comedians play so many cops?
Переглядів 337Місяць тому
Last Saturday, former president Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania when a gunman shot at him - killing one spectator and clipping Trump in the ear. The response? Outrage, condemnations, and prayers on all sides... but there's been less chatter about the gun that shot at him. And this gun has a lot of symbolism: The AR-15. Host Brittany Luse is joined by The Wall Street Journal...

Felon is a label that sticks to people who work jobs…rent holmes apply for mortgages… non of that applies to Trump… felons are you and me… felony doesn’t touch the .05% of wealthy individuals in this country.
100%
I love pumpkin spice latte,
Kamala is trash bro, good viseo tho!
A felon sounds too innocuous for Trump. He should be called a CONVICTED CRIMINAL!
How many movies has she directed again - 3? 4? I prefer a diva.
Great interview
Kamala-nominon 😂
Never heard of IBaM before. It's pretty interesting. Good job, y'all!
I love my AR-15

🏳️🌈It was neither her child’s death nor her husband’s assassination that drove MTL mad. It was this production. Happy Pride!🏳️🌈
Step 1: It's not really happening Step 2: Yeah, it's happening, but it's not a big deal Step 3: It's a good thing, actually Step 4: People freaking out about it are the real problem
A brilliant artist.
Can we talk more about how the app is bad
It's alright. Certainly not worse than HBO or Amazon. And they have 1% of their budget.
Love her music, but her political opinions are like an AI-generated caricature to see how many woke buzzwords she can cram into a sentence.

DEI is the new “N” word for the Republican Party presently.
It’s a slur geared towards black Americans who are in higher positions. Yes. 😢😢😢
Why even mention separate the art from the artist? That implies that Michael Jackson is guilty. The courts found him innocent. The majority of people who have closely followed the case found him innocent. Look at the videos of him responding to the accusations. He’s very believable. I believe him.

Ask Brennan Lee Mulligan if the point is not to win.
*I* ..... CANNOT WIN!
I only subscribed to Dropout 5 weeks or so ago and the stuff on it is so good that I've done little else with my free time. Even if I finish watching everything I want to watch, I'd still stay subscribed because they actually deserve the money.
"Men are emotionally stunted" as per the type of men you somehow always end up messing with. Wonder that the common denominator is here
NO
Maybe there’s a point. But the progress of men that are not emotionally stunted is for sure connected with a critical examination of the social behaviors encouraged by patriarchal systems
It’s hard to avoid emotionally stunted men when they make up the majority.

Love sam and love hearing him talk business. He did another interview against the creator of the Curiosity that is almost as good as this one with similarly interesting insights in business and the current field of streaming. Great interview, great questions here!
_"Almost as good as this one"_ is a great advert for this interview, the Curiosity CEO one was such a wonderful insight into their worlds
In the UK these would be called "Panel shows" not game shows. A recurring group of comedians using a "game" format to riff and be funny. EDIT: I guess I just needed to listen 10 more minutes.
Hah! Serves you right for trying to share your knowledge with others!! 🤣
Im a day 1 dropout subscriber and I guess also day 1 British person yet never made the connection between dropout and shows like WILTY and Mock the Week.
@@deadfr0gthey should’ve said “um, actually!” before adding that knowledge, or else they wouldn’t be awarded the points they correctly deserve
Um Actually, Game Changer, and Make Some Noise are all a tad more "game show" than "panel show" - there are prizes (in some cases) and the game is the main event. I'd argue that many of the British panel shows are also just game shows but with celebrities. That's the main difference anyways, but those exist in American game shows too and are just called "celebrity editions".
Interviewer is a Whitney lol
Unfortunately, I've been hearing a lot of anti-Semitic rhetoric on NPR lately.
