I create videos with the goal of getting more people outdoors and on the water, and to help make those experiences as great as possible. My other UA-cam channel is @PaddleTV, and it focuses on instruction and gear reviews. This channel shares my paddling adventures. I hope it inspires you to try paddling for the first time, to pick up a paddle that hasn't been used in a while, or simply stokes the fire if you're an obsessed paddler like I am.
I love all types of paddling adventures, including kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddling, whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, and packrafting.

7-Days Kayaking Down the Petawawa River | Special Director's Cut
A Director's Cut of my solo kayak camping trip down the Petawawa River from Cedar Lake to McManus Lake. In this version, I give more insight and information about what's happening, why I made some choices, and about the Petawawa River itself.

Kayaking Lake Superior | Strong Winds, Big Decision - Ep 2
Переглядів 7 тис.3 місяці тому
Part 2 of my sea kayaking adventure on Lake Superior, along the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park. After a challenging 2nd day, which involved strong winds and big waves, I'm heading into one of the most difficult sections of the trip. It involves paddling along the most remote and unprotected shoreline of the Park. To complicate things, the wind has become even stronger, and my shoulder i...
Kayaking Lake Superior - A 5-Day Solo Kayak Camping Adventure - Ep1
Переглядів 15 тис.3 місяці тому
Kayak camping on Lake Superior has been on my bucket list forever, and I finally got to do it this season - a solo trip along the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park, from the Agawa pictographs and Sinclair Cove, to Rock Island Lodge in Michipicoten Bay. To say that it didn't disappoint would be a huge understatement. Lake Superior is beautiful, challenging, and unpredictable, and without a ...
I love watching these types of videos. Living in constant pain is something that really effects ones physic...been there and it took a life change to get past it. Take care of the issue and move on.
Torn potatoes suck. In 1992 my shoulder surgery took over six hours, so I've Ben in your shoes/shoulder. Beautiful video and take care of your shoulder!
Great video, Ken. Very well shot and produced. The video quality with those new Go Pros look really good. Loved seeing those big swells from the angles you got. Your worried face during that was cracking me up. Sorry for your shoulder issues. Glad you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Cheers! 🍻
Hey Ken...I use a Coleman Stadium seat that rolls into a nice little package for sitting on when taking breaks from paddling. I did not bring it one day and sat on a log for lunch...my butt hurt for the rest of the day, no bueno when paddling about ten miles!
I really enjoyed this video and got a lot out of it. Great to see the paddling and surrounding nature - and also gain from learnable-moments along the way. I like the pacing, plenty of paddling footage - and inspiring to see you accomplish this trip. I also find value in your not leaving out the things that don't go so well, and dealing with injuries, etc.
Beautiful. No mosquitos? Just wondering. Do you have a Washington state San Juan Islands adventure? To recuperate, you could do a bicycle, or even recumbent bicycle, tour of them using the ferry system.
Ever have a bear encounter on a kayak?
All about weighing out your risks and good decision making.Great video,God Bless ya man!
Watched through, really enjoyed this style/in-depth commentary. Also just generally, really appreciate what you do - I can't imagine how much more work it is to document all of these trips. Appreciate you, take care!
I didnt know you where the same dude as paddling tv thats cool I just started back up with the hobby but too chilly here now in jersey
I never realized how beautiful the water and everything was on that lake unreal man..thanks again for the production.
Hey Ken you think a Feel Free Adventura V2 125 would be good for me on small day trips.I just a have a few big reservoir's I like to paddle coast line?
Awesome adventure dude love it! I tore a cuff and it took 18 months to heal..now its better than my other shoulder. Definitely worth subbing this channel my kinda stuff! How did ya injure yourself, you should be ok just take it easy for a while.mine is all scare tissue now.
Nice video!
Thanks for this Ken. Some great camera work and always interesting. I'm from Australia and as you say, it has the ook and feel of the coast. I've always valued your information and reviews on Paddletv. It's great that you disclose any financial interests and I find you very trustworthy.
What a beautiful video. It's a great way to watch and learn how you navigate it all. A day like that deserves a good ol' fist bump. ;)
Great video, I loved the format! I was really kind of sad when it was over! Hope you do more like that in the future.
Incredible adventure Ken ❤ loved watching you being not worried but alert 😁👌👏
How does KW paddle with so much stuff on his front deck? A big deck bag and camera would get in my way and if it's rough I think it would be an unacceptable safety risk. He is also wearing NO neoprene top or bottom. I have paddled on Superior in the summer and even on a warm day a Short John 1.0 wetsuit or neo shorts and a top are do-able. When I am paddling on potentially rough waters like this ... especially solo, I have my deck clear of everything except spare paddle and compass which are low profile and secured. I am sure KW has done lots of trips and I am not just critiquing for the sake of it. If I saw a noob out on the water attempting these reaches solo dressed like this etc. I would be concerned about their safety/skills. Just saying. Take acceptable risk.
A few very good points and questions Jon. Regarding the deck bag on the front deck. It looks bigger than it is, because the Gearlab Deckpod Pro has a semi-rigid frame to support the action camera. It's far enough forward so that it doesn't impact my strokes in anyway. It also wouldn't have any impact on my ability to roll the kayak. Now, the bag on the back is a little different. Even though I only put light and bulky items in it, it will have an impact on how easy the kayak is to roll, but it's not enough for me to worry about, as I've got a strong roll from 30 years of whitewater paddling. I needed the bag in back because of all the camera gear that I was carrying inside the boat. As for what I'm wearing... I totally agree with you. My choices are not necessarily the choices that everyone should make, because everyone's choices should be guided by their own unique experience and expertise. That being said... let me explain my decision for wearing what I did. For me, prolonged immersion wasn't a major concern on this trip, because I've got an extremely strong brace, and an extremely reliable roll as a backup. On top of that, I was there in late July, when the water is the warmest on Lake Superior - around 66F/19C. 66F is still chilly, but it takes at least an hour or two of immersion for hypothermia to become life threatening at that temperature. The fact that it was sunny and the air temperature was very warm (27C / 81F) meant that I could also warm up very quickly on the rocks once I did get out of the water. These two factors, combined with the fact that the wind was blowing me to shore, dramatically reduced the risk of hypothermia on a lake that typically has a high risk. When you add paddling experience and skill into the equation, which impacts the likelihood of a swim, the result was that hypothermia was not a major concern for me. In fact, over heating / heat stroke / dehydration, was a significantly higher concern, which is why I didn't wear a paddling top/dry top.
Great journey and an excellent video. Thanks for taking us along. I need to add Lake Superior Provincial Park to my kayaking todo list.
Thanks! It's definitely a bucket list trip. I can't wait to go back this summer!
I remember watching a VHS copy of your How To Kayak video that was filmed on the B.C. coast so many years ago. I have always enjoyed your easy going style of teaching/educational film making. It isn't work if you love what you do.
Thanks! I haven't seen that video in years... I'm going to have to dig that up one of these days! :)
super cool!! these views!
I very much enjoyed this trip with you. It was long and it took me a couple days to watch it all. There was so much more to this trip than people think about because you are alone. You have to make decisions that could affect your personal outcome and safety. Plus, you are also the videographer which means it takes lots of extra time to set up and film certain parts. I admire your adventurous attitude and skills. I would never have run this trip, camping and alone. I could tell how heavy your load was by how low that Remix sat in the water on some of the flatter sections. I’m impressed and I’ll be watching more. Yes, I liked the directors cut because I learned a lot of background things that are important plus we all make mistakes and it’s good to see the ones you make and how you handle them. Merry Christmas!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Hope your Holidays were great too!
Hi Ken, hope your shoulder is healing fine Merry Christmas to you and your family. Take care Ken.
Merry HoHo to you as well!!
Ken, job with the back stories. Love the behind the scene talk. Have you ever done a WhiteWater 101 video? I watch your whitewater intensely to see how you pick your lines but understand what I'm seeing. I dont do whight water but I did get cought up in a class2 once. Was short lived but I made it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Regarding whitewater 101... I actually haven't done a UA-cam video of this nature in ages. I'm overdue. I started off my 'career' writing and publishing a number of whitewater instructional books and videos, and so there's some old stuff around... but I'm due to create some new content about whitewater for beginners. I will definitely keep that in mind for this coming season. Cheers!
Thank you for this great video !! I have to ask what the tortilla/bread you keep eating. Looks so good for camping! It’s winter here in Colorado . These are inspiring!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! That's Naan bread - an Indian bread that you can find in most grocery stores. Much tastier than tortilla's or pita. :) Hope you have a great ski season!
Aqua-Bond- Best paddle money can buy. My Mata-Ray fiberglass reinforced ABX. That paddle has gotten me into & out of place where no kayak has been.6yrs! Scratched, discolored & nicked. I would never part with it.
I gotta say that, mostly I just wanted to find out what you did at Crooked Chute and The Temptations.
:). Understandable. Two great sections of whitewater. The Temptations in particular... that's one of the most beautiful sections of whitewater in the world.
As already said, beautiful footage. And answering your questions: more long videos, more director's cut. I think you manage to put a good balance between the footage, "let it run", and meaningful infos -- options and decisions (what, why and how). Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi Ken, I just finished watching your video end-to-end. It did take me several days, a few minutes at a time. As a long-time kayak tripper, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your in-depth insights. I think this format is excellent for folks that want more than a cursory view. I can only imagine how much work you put in to produce the video. Many thanks.
Don't blame you... it's a LOT to take in all at once. I had to edit the video the same way... in small chunks. Cheers!
I like the director cut. Do one for Superior too.
:)
How in the world did you get all that gear into a XP10. Did you stuff some dry bags in front past your feet? It looks like you have as much gear as I get in my Tiderace Pace tour 17. lol.
Ha! Yes. I had the front of the kayak filled with dry bags as well. It was my lighter stuff (sleeping pad, camp chair, camp shoes, etc...)
What year was this filmed?
This was June, 2024.
Such a great video Ken, thanks. My buddy has a Jackson Karma RG. It's a couple of feet longer than your boat. Would it make life easier for this kind of trip?
I'm dying for a whitewater tripping kayak with that extra length. The XP10 was nice, but I would have preferred another 1-2 feet in length... and a few other changes too. I haven't found the ideal whitewater tripping kayak yet. In fact, I don't think it exists yet. Hopefully it does soon!
Great video! The petawawa has been on my bucket list but you may have moved it up a few spots.
:). You might see me on the river when you go. This is a trip you can do again and again...
Excellent video, super interesting commentary, and wonderful trip Ken! Thanks for making this and sharing. I enjoyed the entire thing.
My pleasure!
Thank you for sharing your adventure and providing some behind the scenes looks. Glad to hear that your shoulder is getting better.
Cheers!
I watched the previous set of videos before I went on a September whitewater rafting trip on the Green River in Colorado & Utah, which I mostly did in a tandem or solo inflatable kayak (a much more forgiving craft, of course!). It was really useful preparation to follow along as you chose your lines. And I also really found your "no need to paddle hard into that next rock you're trying to miss" approach to feel right -- I was paddling stern in the tandem and I definitely passed that word to my bow paddlers. 🙂 Thanks for taking us along on this beautiful river and providing the additional commentary as well.
Great to hear the 'stop paddling' tip was helpful. I'm jealous of your trip down the Green River. It's been on my list for a while. Cheers!
Loved this! The extra info about the trip was awesome! More please!
Glad to hear it Ryan!
Well Ken two cups of coffee a packet of biscuit and two and a half hours later and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this again. It was so interesting with your commentary I particularly enjoyed the parts where you were telling people about what you would run what you wouldn't run and what you would run if you had somebody with you. I have to say I agree with you 100% about paddling alone so you really don't know what's coming next which makes the adventure even more exciting. However some rivers you can paddle a thousand times and you always see something new. You should do more of these videos with even more commentary. 👍👍
Ha! I'm glad it only took two cups of coffee to stay awake for it :) Great to hear you enjoyed it again George. I enjoyed watching it again while I was making this version. :)
Really inspiring, makes my wife and I want to get back out paddling. Happy to hear you shoulder is on the mend
Maybe we'll see you out there one day!
I’m really enjoying this video on my tv…puts me right in the action. On a par with Bill Mason’s videos from 40 years ago.
Thanks!
I saw the other videos but loved this one. Thank you again for sharing. I wish I could go there but no whitewater for me for now..lol.. I am living vicariously thru you! I have a request for a video topic. Maybe explain your paddle strokes sometimes and why you do them. I notice you dragging the paddle sometimes and I know there is a good reason. I just don't know what it is. Yes. I'm a beginner..lol. Been loving flat water kayaking since I think July or August.
Glad you enjoyed it! Good idea on the paddle strokes tips. I'll think about that one...
Very enjoyable way to watch the whole trip in one video and with the bonus of your insights that you added in along with your explanations on the water or looking at a section of water and weather it was safe to solo that section. Only tried Whate Water once and in the wrong boat. Will try it again in the future, but in the correct boat for the conditions. Oh and more skill to deal with it.
Ha! Yeah, paddling whitewater in the wrong boat is a lesson you only need to learn once, isn't it? :)
@ yep. Especially when you’re told that it’s a grade one/two. Then you have massive downpours and the river is then in flood. I am just glade I took a Dagger Stratos 14.5L rather than my own Wave Sport Hydra that isn’t very manoeuvrable as it has very little rocker. My new Scorpio HV is a dream to manoeuvre. Just need to sort the seat out to make it as comfortable at the Hydra.
You are such an inspiration. I just recently had my leg amputated and this last summer I just got back on the water and watching your videos gave me the motivation to do so. Not just that I also filmed my experience with lots of tips from your instructional videos. I am hoping to move to S.S.Marie area soon and I really want to follow your adventures. I just love what you do. Keep it up!
That's amazing to hear! I'm actually working on a video about 'How to film your paddling adventure', and so stay tuned for that one. Likely won't release until the spring though. Enjoy SS Marie! So many great places to explore from there...
I'm sorry to hear about your amputation. However, it sounds to me like you have unshakable determination to do what you enjoy, and that's amazing.
I like the format…
Cheers!
What backup paddle do you use, I checked out your great video but didn't see it.
I had an Aquabound 4-piece manta ray paddle stowed inside the stern of the kayak. Fortunately, I never had to pull out.
@@KenWhitingAdventures I like to be ready for everything and that's the one thing I don't have a backup for.
Loved and I would love to see more.
Thanks Gerard!
Yes really enjoyed that. The director cut idea is great. It helps as you explain why you are doing certain things. Good job. My hats off to you ,having the confidence to be out there alone having a real adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah welcome back
Thanks! Now it's time to get back in a boat! Just got the thumbs up from physio, but also just 4cm snow. :)
It's been raining here for a month @@KenWhitingAdventures
