My friend and have just got a pair of Empress 16SPs both with the Tecumseh BVS 153 with electric start. Amazing mowers. He's also acquired an Emperor 21 which is a monster for a restoration.

Hey, I have this exact model as has worked like a dream! Though today was mowing the lawn and the roller disengaged and stopped working. Engine works fine, blade is spinning, but does not engage the roller, I don’t have that handy access hole that this one does where the dog clutch is so have to flip it to get in there, chain is intact and the handle still moves the dog clutch but is not engaging with the engine, any suggestions? Many thanks!

I spoke to a car booter last week and he had one of these for sale at a car boot. He had it lit. And a member of the public walked over and lifted it by the hood which of course was red hot. Burnt his entire hand and fingers. If selling one of these, A) don’t have it lit. B) don’t let anyone handle them either as the fuel could be under pressure and shoot out if it doesn’t have a hood.

You say that getting the reverse light bulb and holder out of the plastic back plate can be tricky because they stick. You then don't show close up. It actually turns clockwise to come out which isn't intuitive. Not to me. That would have helped. But thanks: Very helpful vid. I hate these modern plasticky things. When I started motoring it was all brass and nuts and bolts. Once these plastic tabs are more than a couple of years olf they snap off so easily. Moan groan. Old man stuff.Nostalgia isn't what it was.

I have one question. At 9:16, when you put the stick in reverse there is only one bulb lighting up, the left one. Shouldn’t both light up? 9:18

I bought a Workzone one about 10 years ago, and it's still going strong. I also bought one of the type you are reviewing, just to compare them. The old one is (and always has been ) much smoother in operation. The new one feels quite rough and gritty, when you open and close the jaws. The only difference in them, with regard to features, is that the old one doesn't have a circumference function.

Great stuff! I've got one of these and service it myself every year. I find I need to 'prime' it with 4-5 gentle pulls before it will start, but thereafter it's great. Still got the original manual and tool kit that it came with when my Dad bought it in about 1980!
