I like the sound a lot. I'll give those ones a try. Thanks!
@johnmayer still waiting for you to leave a comment. #johnmayer
You’re close, but you’re still playing it wrong.
@@METHODMAN4EVA thanks for the feedback. What do you suggest is wrong? Again I try my best when making these tutorials it’s tough when all you have is a blurry video of him playing.
@@mattdomonkos my apologies, I didn’t intend to imply that it sounded bad. It was very close, and sounded good nonetheless, and you did a wonderful job! The main thing that I noticed right off the bat is the alternating thumb pattern. He fingerpicks and alternates between the E string and the G string with his thumb back and forth instead of only hitting the E string each time. The only reason I mention it is because that alternating thumb pattern is the structure and basis of the majority of the song. Otherwise, your shapes and chords are pretty spot on! (Also just a little fun fact, he uses only his thumb and his index finger while fingerpicking this song. But of course as you mentioned anyone can do it however they feel comfortable with as many fingers lol) great job either way!
@@mattdomonkos ua-cam.com/video/Nt4D-t5TCUk/v-deo.htmlsi=YuAOTOItvl88IY8Z He fumbles his chords once or twice in this video link, but this video is a good example of the alternating thumb patter that I am referring to. Looking only at his thumb may help you perception of the song a bit. Again, wonderful job!
I miss Texas, sometimes. Reminds me of happy times.
I still love this performance after years. Gus was grooving

wow, sounds amazing!! 😍😍👌🏻 great stuff! 👍🏻❤️🥰
ayy, love this! 😍😍👌🏻🫡
Thank you!
Can you please do a cover of Drifting?
Great video! Please post more videos regularly
Person singing in the crowd ruins it
Thank you so much man.
The only right tutorial on UA-cam, you explained it very well, nailed it!
Thank you! I always try to learn songs exactly how they are played live. More John Mayer content coming soon!
Thanks bro. Much appreciated
Super helpful!
Glad I could help! I may post a more in-depth video discussing tips and tricks
Two weeks imma see this guy for the first time. I hope the show is good. Smaller venue. I’m unsure why I like this music so much but I do
That Orangewood 🤘🏼
You should start your videos by playing the song first then explaining it because it’s too stop-start
Auto tune and set band on keyboards
Lmao I think you've commented this on a couple Gus videos. What are you meaning?
@@Mattizfatt the truth
And I love Gus !!
I was there!
Shout out from Lubbock
Great tutorial!
oh my God it's beautiful! I'd like to hear him play a cover.
Thank you. Btw, I only know of Drifting and In the Neighborhood. What is the third one? Thanks again.
Glad I could help! The third one is called why anyone has to go. I have a tutorial on my page If you’re interested 👍🏻
@@mattdomonkos Thank you, I'll check it out. By the way, I was curious about one other thing: why it is that you made the choice to leave out the ending to Neighborhood (absoulutely no shade, just more curious than anything). The ending where it's pretty fast paced and he sings "Might as well just be myself then." Then he goes back into a faster version of the chorus for the final ending? Thanks again for the lesson here. 🐱
@@angelinainhollywoodland9023 I always appreciate the feedback! When he plays these unreleased songs live they lack a structure usually. At the time of recording I may have watched a different live video and didn’t see the ending you’re referring to. I try my best to give people the chords and techniques necessary to go back and follow along to figure out any other small parts they wish to learn. I am a huge fan so expect more content in the future!
Playback for the chorus and the synthes parts

Thanks bro !
Killer video Matt. I actually learned "Why anyone has to go" from you! Loved the detail and breakdown on that video and this one. Bumped to check out drifting as well!
Talk less, play more. Clicked in 6 different places, just talking. Suggestion for future.
Thank you for the suggestion, this video in particular was having a hard time explaining. Will do! 👍🏻
"Talk less, play more"? How about you comment less and play more you knob? Love the rudeness in the comment and then disguising it as a "suggestion." That said...@Matt, thank you for making this tutorial my man! You took the time out to make this in depth and I appreciated the extra context.
@@apwithease I’m glad I could help. When i learn songs I like to learn all the little parts. Mayer plays w ton of improvisation and learning those techniques can enhance your guitar playing. 👍🏻🫶🏻
@@apwithease First of all, my comment was a healthy criticism. I have not insulted anyone, I have not called anyone names (unlike you). Second of all, criticism is a great way how tom improve. If everyone around you will tell you how great you are, you soon will end up where Russian president Putin is right now. Third of all, it's sad to see how everyone is hyper-sensitive nowadays, and cannot handle different opinion. The moment you get vocal and express your thoughts without insult (unlike channel91), you get called EVERYTHINGphobic, knob, etc. Sad times for society. Fourth of all, just subscribed to your channel Matt to support it 😉
@@stasiso You see how much thought you put into that comment? That's what REAL critique looks like. Not 4 words "talk less, play more." That's just lazy. Some critique for you: Put more thought into your comments if you're going to give a suggestion to someone who is putting together stuff for free so people can learn. Critique is great but it's an art form, and to do it right requires effort and time. Saying so little isn't helpful and provides no context. Call me sensitive all day long - it's not my video? I have nothing to be sensitive about... I agree, everyone can improve, just put some thought into it because feedback as it is an art form.
Thankyou
👍🏻🫶🏻
Nice shirt🤘🏼
Hey! Nice job!
Nice job! I was looking forward to you playing it in full. Post that cover this week bro!!!
hey man, great tute, one recommendation in the future open with the song at start of video.
Thank you! That is a good idea I’ll have to do that next time. I’m still new to the whole UA-cam thing but I really appreciate the feedback. 👍🏻
Thanks for posting this art
“there’s no need to talk, I’ll read your palms.”
Thanks dude, that's really good !!
Thank you, glad I could help!
hahaah
You should definitely do a full cover of the song. You gotta good voice.
Thank you! Just got over a cold hopefully a cover soon 👍🏻
On the last chord it’s 2 on the low E
I thought so to, but I looked closely and it doesn’t look like he he moves his thumb to the low e on the 2nd fret. Hes mostly focused on the D shape notes rather the bass.
@@mattdomonkos look closer, john has big hands
@@ThePineappletrees69 thank you for the suggestion. I still don’t hear that bass being played and through consulting with other people we all agree that the D shape is primarily focused as the last chord. We compared johns hand position for a D sus 2 and this chord and they don’t match.
@@mattdomonkos all of you disappoint me then, john adds his thumb into everything anyway pause a 0:11 and zoom in. ua-cam.com/video/Hwx7N5TNF34/v-deo.html
Please post a cover where you play and sing the whole song
Great video!! You and John both rock!
