Addicted to getting high
Buffalo Straya day 25
A Rough day with westerlies, 2 themals were enough so I bailed from 6500ft to be on the ground.

A very hard day indeed , very little lift around and an inversion at 4500ft so never got above take off height . Just saved the landing as my feet failed to cooperate with each other as usual !

Another Easy day , straight off launch into a thermal to 9000ft and as Lucas , Dan and I climbed out a Convergence line formed all the way from Mt Bogong to Gundowering . Lucas and Dan headed North for a 4 hour flight , I headed south to Mt Bogong and Big Hill but with lack of clouds towards Feathertop I just flew over town .

Easy climb to 9000ft , just cloud hopping around for a couple of hours, flew down to my house and still arrives there at 6000ft for an effortless flight in smooth cold air , then landed perfectly in a rough air approach although the camera didn't last long enough to capture the landing. Took off about 3pm , dan landed about 7pm and I landed about 5.30 ...

Flashback to Dan's last visit in 2020 with Harley Pete . 5 of us all made it from Mt Buffalo to Mt Feathertop , then onto Mt Bogong and landing at Mt Beauty Airfield . A flight of about 3 hours over 100 kilometers .

Nice climb out off launch after inversion broke , but little lift over valley floor . Dan had another good 4 hour day and I was happy to scratch back to the airfield .

A Rough Day off Emu , more like a passenger and not even game to thermal low deep in trees . To top of a thermal triggering as landing so south west prevailing and tail to north on approach added to a sketchy landing over bitumen.

Was strong and from the south west ,, so went to the far side of the ridge and found a nice smooth launch location , soared for about an hour or more in patchy lift and landed in light to no wind, was really smooth last arvo flight.
Still gives me butterflies!
Never seen anyone climbing out straight above Mount Buffalo launch. Great work and thanks for the spectacular view of the flying.
Beatiful place and fly ;)
I'd recommend to get a little better camera and mic. Thanks.
Why isn't the wind noise clear enough or do you want to hear the vario ? I use a sessions 4 all the new gopro are bigger , it does 4 k but realistically it's nor worth uploading higher than 1080 , most people only watch a minute , I only really upload as a flight log nowdays 😅
@@ThePatMach The colors seem washed out, and yes, the wind noise is annoying. And the video is jittery. (I use large mini led monitor) I don't mind the usual video quality on most youtube videos, but I was looking forward to seeing your video with higher quality. Perhaps 60FPS with better color, even at 1080P, would have been nice. Good luck with your videos. I think the genre has a potential.
OK, I'll do my next at 60fps and 4 k , see how you like it 👍
@2:00 'speckled potatoes' 😂😂😂
Super ramp
Epic!!!
Hey Bob , I'm actually in Australia , North East Victoria ! You have plenty of great sites there , and a big country to explore , it's all pretty flat here except the East Coast . Thanks for your support bud
hey Pat been enjoying your vids NZ is a beautiful place looks warm there now cold and snowy here in western north carolina we do get to fly thru out the winter cheers
Nice launch and excellent landing Pat!
Sweet landing in really difficult air. Just a stone's throw to a coldy too!
yes , rodeo air till the ground effect helped out .
Thanks for another great video of the Mt Beauty area Pat. The take off at Tawonga is sooo much bigger these days - wow.
you'd be suprised at what AI can do for lens correction now days eh
We used to do lens correction with triggernometry on computers Dad would do it with 2 airphotos and stereo glasses with pin markers haha
i''ve fixed the problem , just another flight log now !
the launch looks a lot tidier than when I last launched there in about 1992!
Yes new astro turf
fantástico !!!
cheers !
bit of a rough landing there bro happy new year!
Nice flight and great landing Pat!
Cheers Dave , hope to see you soon
Where's that site?
Mystic ,, North East Victoria Australia
@@ThePatMach Thanks, looks like a great place to fly
Looks like you and Dan are going to get plenty of flying together over the next few months!
Awesome 🤤
Wow
Cerna Hora????
No lift riding here 😅
If God had wanted us to ski like that he would never had invented ski lifts. 🤣🤣
nice seeing your vids again gotta wrk on those landings cheers
I was more concerned about the GA plane lined up at the end of the strip, landed cross tail
Awesome stuff Pat....
Thanks for the vid Pat! Buffalo launch scares me… even on video! Great to see you on top of the stack once again!!!

Publishing it in slow motion is one way to mitigate the appearance of pound down.
Nice flight. Strong lift and turbulence at times from the look of it. What time of year?

after starting the left 360 you probably could have continued the left circle and land into the wind but changed your mind and reversed the turn right to a downwinder. I try to setup my approaches the same way if possible so each one is similar with slight adjustments as needed. I only use 'S' turns if it's blowing like stink otherwise it's all geometry in a continuous turn to manage energy state. Seemed very strong at launch, where is the primary LZ? Glad it was all sand at the end..
I flew straight past the perfect opportunity to land , topless gliders don't turn tight ! Always land early , just stupidity , wind dropped off and was crossed , better tail on sand than ocean or slippery reef was my thinking , walked away unhurt
@@ThePatMach like they say, we've all been there. Once I have a plan I try not to deviate (too much, no turn reversals in other words) from it. showing up high enough to have time to formulate a plan doesn't hurt. I prefer the continuous turning approach (with adjustments) to an aim point on a short final. If it were easy, right?!
@@ThePatMach topless gliders? NO gliders turn tight when you cross-control.
@@darrellhambley7245 the glider went exactly where I wanted it to , the cross control was to see where I wanted to impact, dragged the right wing as much as possible to slow . If I'd finished the turn into wind I'd end up in the drink ! If I'd landed into wind on the reef I could have snapped my ankle , all bad choices, considering I just flew past the perfect landing opportunity into wind trying to scratch up .
@@ThePatMach did your right wingtip touch the ground? which spot was the perfect landing opportunity you mentioned. they all look bad, may turning right into the valley and back into the wind for that sand patch.
Downwind landing was an excellent option. Rocks hurt!
Thanks for sharing and respect for your courage of posting. It will help others to learn something
Low speed ?
Crossed wind , thermal on left side
@@ThePatMach ok
oO
Ouch…. apart from the A-frame, is everything else ok? Are you ok?
An old video , walked away , just a few parts haha
@@ThePatMach I thought I recognized this from some time ago but it never hurts to re-post as a terrifying reminder of doom that awaits the unwary pilot. :-D
@@GlideLA if you notice I fly past a perfect landing option to do the worst setup for a topless glider , my fear was it would be easy to break a leg on slippery reef or end up in the surf .....momentary lapse of reason is all I can say !
@@ThePatMach I make many mental errors then try to catch and reverse each in time. Some slip though.
Nice !
Thanks!
Sweet!
I’d find a new hobby! ⛳️🏌️
Nice landing, well done
Nice one Pat. I’m interested in what conditions you use Tawonga Gap in. Is it just a valley wind that you launch into, or is it an overall prevailing wind direction you wait for? Cheers!
Most Mornings in lighter winds
Fully in the zone :)
Nah its just winter, mellow and cruising !
Approach 78kmph over Dam wall
Approach over Dam wall at 55kmph
Nothing wrong with that at all! Great job!
Thanks 👍
It always seems so damn fast on go pro until you touch down, then you realise it couldn't have been as fast as it looked
I just checked my GPS and i was doing 78kmph (50mph)as i crossed the dam wall.
