Why didn't I see this before ❤❤❤
Great podcast!! You are so right about artists. I will keep making art even if I need to find another job outside of art.
Congrats!!! 3 years is a great run!!! Keep it going!!!
Thank you! Will do!😊
So great discovering this podcast and hearing your stories. P.s love your accent Olga 🙂
'Promosm' 👌
John is the Best!
💯
Thank you so much!!! I am working solo at the moment, but it will be so much more comforting to be represented. Thanks for the tips and knowledge.
You're so welcome! Good luck with your agent search.
Great podcast. I like your thinking and approach to the whole business.
Congratulations! It's really cool to have my art teacher be a soon to become famous author!
I am definitely reevaluating what I am spending time on. After having two kids in 2019 and 2021, I stopped working but now I am slowly looking at jobs because this publishing dream is fading for me a bit and that's okay. I still love to draw but it doesn't put food on the table.
Also, I wanted to say that it is good to step back and take a look at one's priorities. Anything you need Sunny (and Olga) we are here for you.
Thank you that's very sweet of you.
Sunny!!!!! Best of luck on everything!!!! BUT PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE US!!!!
Aww, thanks. No worries I’m not going anywhere.❤️
Thank you so much for talking about leaving one's agent. We usually hear about how to get one, but what happens when it doesn't work out and then you have to move on. Great podcast ladies!!!! Happy summer to the both of you!!!!
I am excited about summer folio! The first prompt sounds very funny.
This is so inspiring!!
Here I am, with my BA in arts, with a few published books waiting when I will have time to do art, because I have children and wondering if it won't be too late. Panicking even a little. So happy to know it won't be too late, I just have to work on it eventually :)
It’s never too late. Do what you can when you can. Life gets in the way but that doesn’t mean you have to give up. Just keep at it.
All that info on Scbwi was super helpful! Thanks!
Congratulations Olga on publishing your book!!! Winter 2023! so we are not quite there :)
Lenny is one of the best illustrators! What a joy to watch this wonderful conversation and find out more about Lenny!
My jaw dropped when you said you bought Anooshas book, she's is one of favorite illustrator too! You ladies are always saying out loud things I've thought to myself but haven't been able to express because I'm not in an artist community currently.
There is so much that goes into illustration. It’s fun to see those choices in real time.
Thank you so much ! I really enjoy your talks and find them very helpful :)
Having a catchup today on missed episodes! Excellent advice in this one (as always!) Self doubt is a pain in the creative butt! Forever struggling with it myself 😊
Thank you for sharing these portfolio reviews. Amazing opportunity to learn from you and keep improving 💜💜
You're welcome! We're so glad you find them helpful.
Thankyou for another informative video! I'm listening to these while drawing...Always find it helpful and encouraging to listen to your tips and advice on children's illustration, cheers! :D
Hi Lou! Thank you. ❤️ We’re so glad you find our videos helpful. Happy drawing:)
Thankyou for another very helpful video! I always enjoy listening to you ladies. A tutorial on book dummies would be great...formatting, sizes and dpi, all that fun stuff :)

I love hearing people story 💕. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for listening,
This is so helpful. Thanks for doing this!!!
You’re welcome! We’re glad you find it helpful.
I haven't really tried getting professional critiques before. The field of freelance Children's Book Illustrations is a bit new in my local area (probably even in my country). But now I'm actually more excited to get me some portfolio critiques to get me going and to find the things I still need to work on! Oh and a question. XD Do you happen to know any free online critiques from professionals? If not, it's fine as well. Thank you again for the amazing video!
It’s funny you should ask. We just announced in our newsletter that we’re planning to giveaway a free critique from Olga and I this December. If you’re following us on Instagram you’ll see us announce it. I don’t know if any others that are free. Usually you have to pay or be a member of an organization that offers them. But it never hurts to ask.
@@illochat That sounds amazing! I've already followed Illochat on IG but I don't think I have joined your newsletter yet but I'm checking it out now! Thank you so much for the opportunity! And thank you as well for the advice! I'll be looking up upcoming art conventions near me and see if anyone there also offers Children's Illustrations critique. Hope I find one! Thank you!
Maybe I need to get out more, but I’ve been working as an artist for just short of 20 years and I have never, ever seen a friendship/partnership like you two have. But I have seen a lot of ego, a lot of reluctance to share and a lot of reluctance to constructively help or mentor. I think it’s really cool that you two are in a mind space where you’re able to always keep your end goal in mind and not let money, competition or other insecurities get in the way. It’s to be admired. I think we need more friendships/partnerships like this in the artist community. BTW, I thought Olga’s fidget might be a tool she uses to draw with. 🙂
Awwwww. Thank you for the kind words. I wish everyone could find a critique partner/ mentor/ creative partner like we have found. It helps so much in your creative journey. This is a lonely job. it's easy to work alone and stay home and not reach out to people. I'm so grateful Olga reached out to me and struck up a conversation. It's crazy to think that we have only met in person one time for 15 minutes. But sometimes that's all it takes.
Hi Ladies, so happy to have found your chats here on UA-cam! 🙂 Like Sunny, I’ve been drawing since childhood, but it wasn’t fostered or supported so I grew up doubting and not believing in myself or my talents and abilities as an artist. Even so, I went to art school and graduated from The Art Institute Of Portland with a degree in Graphic Design in 2003. After that, I didn’t take the path that I’d hoped. Instead of freelancing or getting a production or art direction job, I took a couple totally unrelated jobs at some non-profits then didn’t work for a time. I started a Zazzle shop in 2013 and have been doing the POD thing ever since. The commercial art things I’ve created have been my best sellers, but folks aren’t really interested in my cartoons - which is a bummer because that’s where my heart is and has always been. Ever since I’ve been young I’ve had this dream of drawing characters akin to Strawberry Shortcake or the Care Bears, and using them to create greeting cards or perhaps bring back old school fun stuff like the magic slate or coloring, activity or paper doll books. But, like you two, I’ve had trouble making the right connections and reaching out. That’s what I feel like I need - a step-by step guide for how to do everything. I’m a “show me then I can do it” kinda person. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say in your next podcasts. I’m glad you both are doing this. 👍😎👍
Hi Juliet, This is Sunny. That happens to so many artists and designers. We get degrees and if you don't go directly into that field it becomes even more daunting to try and break into that field. If you want to go into greeting card design follow artists who are successful in that field. They will give tips and tricks on how to submit to companies and possibly find a licensing agent. What's cool is that many of the tips we give can be applied to most art related fields. You just have to find your creative community. I hope you find our videos helpful. Thanks so much for watching.
Great video! Thanks for sharing all these great tips
Thanks for watching Audrey! We’re glad you liked it.
