BattleTech: Getting Started
Переглядів 6 тис.6 місяців тому
In this video, we will go over the supplies needed to play a game of Classic BattleTech, as well as how to set up a game, and give a brief overview of a typical round.
Just found your series- this was a great primer for me as I'm starting out. Thanks! Sub'd and liked. o7
I'm very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the Sub!
Locust pilots are either speed freaks, adrenaline junkies, or batshit crazy. The greatest Locust pilot ever was Winston Nearon of the mercenary unit Snord's Irregulars. He was able to overheat a Locust and shut it down in combat...let that sink in for a minute. Since he also collected guns, he simply poped open the canopy and fired pistol and rifle he had stored in his cockpit until he ran out of the ammo. He didn't affect the battle outcome, but it was said he had a grand time doing it.
That is just awesome!
Very cool series, subbed for more. You should take care to add the newest video to the end of the playlist instead of the top, makes them flow better for people watching later.
That's a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to implement that, as soon as I can.
These little 'mechs are great in 3025, but by 3050 the proliferation of pulse lasers, LB/X autocannon, and targeting computers makes it likely they will be disabled easily by their larger brethren. Just one more reason 3025 is the best era for BT. Light mechs remain relevant.
3050 is kind of a bad time for light mechs, especially inner sphere ones. However, with the late 3060's variants and especially the more recent ilClan variants they do regain _a lot_ of usefulness, primarily through speed upgrades.
The Commando is one of my favorite light 'mechs. If you've got a fairly light lance, the COM-2D should always be on it. Pair it with anything from a Wolfhound to a Panther to a Vindicator. Use the big guns to open up armor, then run in hard with the Commando and start dumping missiles into those critical slots. Works like a charm.
The ability for most Commando variants to just pepper a target should not be underestimated. Last time I fielded a 2D at an intro game, I managed to get two head shots and two TACs, in a single attack, with one of its SRMs with one of the luckiest series of rolls I've ever had!
the 10srm commando is one of my favourite mechs. A single full backvolley can make it worth its bv.
I enjoy the format of your videos. Working through the variants chronologically makes me feel like I understand the entire history and design direction of the mech.
I am glad you like it! The next video, where I cover the Shadow Hawk, goes even more in-depth than the previous two.
@@12crit Can't wait! The Shadow Hawk is one of my favorites. 😊
There is a joke in here about lubricant and right hands…
Coolant, you mean to say. Right? Right?
😰
I like this light mech. A good low BV initiative sink
This is the EXACT type of mech breakdown Ive wanted, please continue for the rest of the 800 mechs please :D plashman next?
Making a list of 'Mech requests for after I cover the AGOAC box, Beginners boxes, and Clan Invasion boxes. Your suggestion is added to the list!
once again, fantastic stuff! to the point and throrough! i´ve been into the lore for ages and only now consider getting into the actual game
this is great stuff! thank you very much!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Good stuff!!😊
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just started and these vids are really helpful. Thanks!
I'm glad they are handy! Thanks!
Good job, well thought out and well done.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Very important tactical note for the LCT-1M: It has literally a single ton of armor, that's 16 points total. Do not get this thing anywhere near an enemy. Stay at the absolute outer limits of your LRM medium range whenever possible. Because a single medium laser hit can cripple this Locust. The arms and legs each have a single point of armor, but more importantly they only have 3 and 4 structure, respectively. So a medium laser will remove that likb with a single shot. And if that's one of your legs? You're done.
Absolutely!
Seeing what 1 ton of armor looks like on the record sheet is a little disconcerting.
Loved the very in depth review.. for sugestions outside of the box.. Id say Archangel.. or maybe for something more "tame" marauder
Might have to splurge on an Archangel model now. It's a fun design!
Series should be perfect to get the non battletech fans of my friend group involved. Thanks!
Awesome! My intention is to use this channel to make it easy for newcomers to get into BattleTech. Hopefully it helps!
Super cool. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Oh hey! This is an excellent series idea!
I knew I wanted to do some videos covering BattleMechs and was struggling on where to start, then I just went "where did I start?"
As a new player to Classic these intro videos are great.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Im curious with the insertion of definitions into the sourcebooks you need to remember we couldnt pull out our phone & Google the term, & while you may have had a physical dictionary or encyclopedia set you may not have or weren't the type.of kid or person to take the time to look it up. Funny how we take that for granted here in the future.
Oh, I'm not young at all and grew up before the Internet age and frequently had to dig out our dictionary. What I was meaning to call out was the phrase itself, along the lines of "the dictionary defines "x" as..." rather than a more natural way to insert the meaning :) Not saying it was a bad idea to define a notably uncommon word, just a minor critique on the way they did it. Even my English teacher from back in the day would call that out. I'll try to do better in the future!
I'm new to Battletech. I really like this format. Thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
A well-thought-out analyzation of the Locust! I look forward to your next video.
Thank you!
I dig you vids but man it's pronounced Co--Nope--Sss
I'll make sure to fix it for next time!
Thanks for making this. I've always wanted to get into this. I think you nudged me in the right direction!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thank you for tackling this project.
Thank you so much! I'm really enjoying working on it.
I am so glad I found this!! Also, I hear the "in our next episode" bit read by the voice from Robotech. The next thrilling installment of How to Play Battletech. [Bwah bwah bwah buh buh buh bwah thud dud dud dum]
Oh no! I better watch out for Harmony Gold! 😉 I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Can I get you to do all my overly complex board games? This was so good!
Thank you so much! Might branch out once my BattleTech rules are finished.
Thanks for this great video. Helped a lot. Also nice job on the video improvements. Keep it up.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
This was great Once again I learnd something never caught while playing. The leg mounted machine guns on the Viking have fire through alot of partial cover and height 1 terrain. Gott to apologize to some infantry.......
I keep learning as well as I go through making these videos. I'll regularly find a rule that makes me stop and go "oh...oops."
I just came across your channel & was glad you mentioned using bottle caps as stand ins for mechs. While the rules can get rather crunching (something I love), it's really quick & easy to pickup & you can add the advanced rilules if & when you'd like. The fact the rules have barely changed in the forty years this game has been around only adds to the appeal & keeping the barrier to entry extremely low. I enjoyed 40k twenty years ago, but now you'll spend a mortgage payment or more just to buy a single army the next rules update may just ruin. You can even download the basic rules & I even believe a hex map from Catalyst Gaming Labs website, & after that I recommend the A Game of Armored Combat box set as you get rules, dice, maps, plastic mechs & some cardboard mechs just to give you even more. It is a fantastic way to get your feet wet & will give you mechs you will continue to use in the future.
Yeah, I learned how expensive and frustrating an edition change in 40k could be and it REALLY makes me appreciate how consistent BattleTech is, as well as how flexible force building is ("it's salvage!"). Plus, big stompy 'Mechs will never NOT be cool.
1:04 sounds like a discord ping lol
I would *never* forget to mute my computer while recording... ;)
Great content.
Thank you!
Perfectly awesome series so far! Can’t wait to watch more.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! More videos coming soon! Next one is for this series.
Thank you, learned somethings I didnt know. That you cant run in to water but have to walk.Would love some more of this tutorials 👍
Thanks for watching! Hoping to get another out within the next couple weeks!
I want to start Battletech but my question is, how many miniatures do I need? I saw a 5 pack but do I need more?
Most players play a 4v4 game. The smallest force pack they sell is 4 models. So if you are just looking for some models to get started, pick whatever pack has the 'Mechs you like the look of. The packs with 4 models will usually run you around $25. While a single pack comes with 4-6 miniatures, keep in mind each of those miniatures have multiple variants to choose from in-game when selecting record-sheets, so there a ton of variety. If looking for a super solid recommendation, I would start with the A Game of Armored Combat. It comes with a good variety of 8 models that will allow you to switch things up from game to game, plus everything else you need to play full games of Classic BattleTech (for 2 players even!), all for $40-$50. If you just want to just dip your toes in, the Beginner Box is a good start. Only comes with 2 models, but it comes with a map and a simplified version of the rules as well. That box runs about $20-$25. Both of those boxes also come with cardboard standees to proxy for 'Mechs as well, which is legal and legit when playing, too. So, you can actually play with no models as long as you have distinct proxies to play with, but a good place to start, model wise, is 4. Hope that helps!
Super helpful, clear, and concise stuff, keep em coming!
For tge greater good you got a chuckle outta me with that one. Wouldn't be the first time BT or GW "borrowed" from other IP.
Definitely not the first time! Thanks for watching!
Easily one of my favorites. Great coverage!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Please, don't abandon this series! It's how I'm convincing my board game friends to get into crunchier wargames!
I promise I'm not abandoning it! Trying my best to make as good a Weapon Attack Phase video as I can. No promises, but I'm shooting for the end of the month!
@@12critshooting 😂 I see what you did there.
@@erickmain Couldn't resist.
Just getting into Battletech, didn't know about this kind of book, I love how detailed it is!
There are so many options for supplemental books, all with different intentions for players. I am trying to get as many different kinds of books previewed so players can have a good idea on what they are purchasing before they pull the trigger.
Bring on the drama! Name the other game. :)
If this book was accurate to the other IP, it would be Era Report 40,000!
Once again really helpful for getting started and cery much appreciated
Working on the next rules videos l. I'll try to get them up soon!
This is really helpful to get into the game thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Ive been playing a ton if Battletech and MW5 and think it was high time to finally dive into the tabletop game, so thank you for this! Time to add to the checklist.
Welcome to the Classic BattleTech community!
