      Same for me. I enjoy a good high-fidelity module as well but it's really nice to be able to get some quick carnage in with minimal retraining after a long layoff, and the FC3 modules fit the bill perfectly for that. Thanks for watching!

      The "Outremer" user-made campaign for the Su-25T is next. That one is short with some humor. The first mission is really difficult but I recommend the campaign nonetheless. After that it's on to the FC3 Su-25.

      For sure. I played for months and learned a ton without buying anything. Between this stuff, the trial program, and the great community mods for the A-4, UH-60, and C-130, there's really no reason for anybody interested in DCS to hold off for financial reasons, at least with respect to DCS content itself.

      @@funky-sim Understood, I'm busy with work and home life as well. I can realistically can play DCS 6-12 days at most per month depending on how busy I am. Funny thing about DCS for me is I went all in at the beginning on the F-18, then went onto a lot of different modules and circled back to the SU-25T and the A-10 A. I've realized I have the most fun blowing stuff up in the simple to use planes vs. the complex modules. I have a hard time finding other people to play with since I only sim part time. I enjoy your walk through videos, I think your skill level is really good.

      @@blakedelaney1951 I totally get what you're saying. When I'm well-practiced and have plenty of time, a good sortie in something like the Hornet is really satisfying. But a lot of the time I'm rusty and those sorties turn into debugging sessions for some weapon I haven't used in awhile, and in moments like those the FC3 ground pounders have a strong appeal via instant gratification.

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim 12 днів тому

      I haven't played it recently, but I just popped it open in the mission editor and it looks fine to me. The win trigger, loss trigger, flares trigger, late activation trigger for one of the tank groups, and a bunch of others are there. All the groups called out in the win trigger are present in the mission. When I start the mission and fast-forward time all the groups that are supposed to be moving are moving and the late activation trigger worked as designed. What are you seeing that makes you think it's bugged? Maybe you need to do a repair on the DCS installation.

      @vascomferreira 13 днів тому

      @@funky-sim on every attack run even after i stop de convoy. i try to fly in the direction the convoy is and then look into the Shkval targeting system, what usualy happens is the plane goes way up becouse i trimm it bad, or goes to the side and then when i find the convoy and turn the plane in direction of the convoy again they are already firing at me again :p its like i need to put in active pause to gain my situation awareness and only then get out of pause. i think i need to pratice more :)

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim 13 днів тому

      @@vascomferreira definitely practice more. Based on what you're saying, I can guess at a couple things going wrong. First, you may not be flying far enough away from the targets before turning back towards them, leaving you little time to lock them up and shoot. If you are actually getting plenty of distance but it just takes you a long time to find the targets again, then it sounds like you're flying around without any sense of where you are. You should be able to quickly look around, spot some landmarks you studied before the mission, and know where you are and where you expect to find the targets. Then you point your jet at the targets, slew the Shkval pipper in the HUD into roughly the right spot, and only then look down to the TV screen to try for a lock. To help with that, you can try using a consistent approach vector for each attack run so that the sight picture is pretty much the same each time. For example, if you spotted the targets while flying north and shot at them and got them stopped, don't try to fly past them, turn around, and attack again while flying south. Just turn around immediately after your attack, get plenty of distance, and come in on them the same way you did the first time. That'll help you find the targets much quicker on each subsequent run. Later on when you get more comfortable and have better situational awareness with respect to your position, you can start attacking from multiple directions. To help control the jet better while you're heads-down in the TV screen, you can try putting yourself into a shallow descent and cutting the throttle to about half. You'll lose a bit of altitude this way but you'll probably be less surprised by what the plane has done while you were staring at the TV screen. Leaving the jet in full throttle while you're distracted will often end up with the nose going way high and you losing the target lock you worked so hard for. The TV screen also has indications for your plane's attitude and altitude but it can be hard to remember to look at those while you're searching for targets. You can also try using the attitude hold or straight-and-level autopilot modes while you're searching for targets in the TV screen, but then you have to remember to turn off autopilot once you've found your target and need to steer towards it. All of this is going to be much more difficult if you're not using VR or some sort of head/eye tracking. I played for quite awhile using a joystick hat to control the view, but I found that I was often very disoriented. Even if I did see a target, I would struggle to figure out how to get the jet pointed at it without losing track of it because I didn't have a good sense of which way the jet was pointing. That improved dramatically once I switched to TrackIR. If you'd like to post a video of your troubles, I'll gladly take a look and give you my thoughts.

    You make it look so easy :) I still haven't flown anything in DCS. The button setup, keyboard, HOTAS and flightstick is daunting to begin. I've been looking for some premade setup for various aircraft to load and take it from there.

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim 21 день тому

      Don't procrastinate getting in. If you can find somebody's pre-made control profile, that's great. But if not, just get started flying around. You'll only need pitch, roll, and throttle for that, and even just a keyboard will suffice. Then start learning one small thing at a time and add in the controls for that. Over time you'll get a sense of what things are important to have mapped and where they should be. Managing control profiles for all the various aircraft is a mini-game all on its own. Nobody ever stops fiddling with it.

Once I instructed him to attack the primary target, he was about to do something useful but then the helicopters showed up and I had to redirect him to deal with that. I'm guessing he probably took a hit while engaging the helicopters. Once the AI wingman takes a hit, he usually refuses to do anything useful after that.

    Hi, i have been following your campaign Cyclone 3 videos on the SU-25T and its a joy to watch how smooth it all runs, both visualy and also how you use the controls, congratulations. I have been learning DCS for a few months, and i have been. using a webcam with AITrack and OpenTrack to use as a trackir, and it works but not as smooth as your videos, i have a problem on the limit as i turn my head, and depends on the light i have in my room. Do you think is worth to invest in a TrackIR Camera with a IRTrackStar RS Ultralight? Also what do you use for the zoom? I have a X56 HOTAS and use the throtle Joy_ZAxis for zoom but its a bit clunky, and some times it flickering and i have to zoom a litle in or out to stop moving. Did you had any similiar problems with zoom? nice videos of the campaigns again been learning some new things, thanks :)

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim 24 дні тому

      Have you tried adjusting the curves for your head tracking? If it is losing tracking as you turn your head to the limit, I wonder if you need to increase the sensitivity so that you don't need to turn your head so far. Ambient light can always be a problem with these head tracking solutions. I make sure to have no light sources behind me when I'm playing. I love my IRTrackStar from RJSimTech (rjsimtech.com/). I tried a few of the other headpiece solutions available and this one is the best I've used by a wide margin. If you're looking at buying one, take a look to see whether it's likely to attach to your headset without issues. If you have any doubts, the guy who makes the RJSimTech stuff is very responsive and helpful. I haven't used any of the camera solutions other than the TrackIR so I can't recommend anything else based on my experience. That being said, RJSimTech has recently announced their own camera, the IRCam. It's not much more expensive than the TrackIR camera and it looks to be much higher quality. If my TrackIR camera were to die today, I would almost certainly buy the RJSimTech IRCam. I know it seems like I'm pushing RJSimTech, but I really am just that impressed with their quality and customer service. All that being said, I'm hesitant to recommend you just throw money at the problem. I think you should spend some time adjusting curves and settings and figuring out what is happening when things go wrong and whether you can fix that with your current setup. Once you understand what the problem is, you might have a better sense of whether buying a better camera and/or headpiece will fix it. For zoom, I use my ring finger on the slider on my Virpil CM3 throttle. If you watch closely you'll see that sometimes the zoom jitters a bit even though I've got the smoothing and dynamic dead zones maxed out. I've seen some people recommend opening up the throttle and cleaning the potentiometer for the slider but I'm a bit scared to do that. So far the jitter doesn't bother me enough that I want to risk breaking something.

      @@funky-sim Thanks for the good advice. Yes its a good update, i have to measure the pros and crons againt investing to a more advance trackir system, good to know RJSimTech is a good investment. Another question about pedals, for what do you use then on the Su-25T? Do you use it on the air for example? Is it a must have to flying helicopters? i have made some good improvemnts on my flying and with the campaign, going for mission 5 at the moment :)

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim 19 днів тому

      @@vascomferreira I use the pedals quite a bit in the Su-25T. Obviously they're handy for taxiing as well as takeoffs and landings in crosswind. I also use them in normal flight for making coordinated turns so that I'm not slipping so much and the turns end up tighter. In combination with the maneuver flaps, the coordinated turn makes a pretty big difference. They're also handy for adjusting aim when firing weapons. That can be pretty small adjustments when firing the cannon or rockets. Or it can be pretty drastic when I'm looking down locking something up on the Shkval and then look up to line up the Vikhr reticle. Sometimes I'll stomp pretty hard on the rudder to get that alignment right. However, none of this absolutely requires pedals. If you don't use the rudder at all in normal flight, you'll just need to plan for wider turns and be a bit more careful about your alignment while lining up shots. Takeoffs and landings with crosswind are going to be ugly but you can still get it done with the keyboard rudder buttons. For the Su-25T, a stick with a twist function is plenty good enough to use the rudder effectively even if it's not quite as nice as pedals. It'll be hard to fly most helicopters well without good pedals, although the Ka-50 is very flyable with a twist stick because of the contra-rotating rotors. For other helicopters, holding the twist for pretty much the entire flight will get uncomfortable quickly. If you do invest in pedals, I would recommend skipping past the cheap stuff like the Thrustmaster TFRP and Logitech G-Pro. They aren't smooth enough for flying helicopters well. The TFRP pedals were the first set I had but I pretty quickly stopped using them because they were more frustrating than not having pedals at all. The price jump up to stuff from Virpil, Winwing, VKB, MFG, or the Thrustmaster TPR pedals is significant but well worth it.

      It's set in the same fictional conflict. I'm guessing the Ka-50 campaign came first and there's some pretty heavy re-use for the Su-25T campaign. A lot of the missions have the same basic structure but the mission goals and triggers are different. Obviously the play style is going to be pretty different but you'll rely heavily on the Vikhr missiles in both.

    are you landing with air brakes deployed for a specific reason?

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim Місяць тому

      Yes. It may not be realistic but it works well for me in DCS. I like to keep the engine RPM high on landing. There's a couple reasons for that. First is that the engines in the Su-25T feel a bit more responsive when they are already at a high RPM. I'm terrible at staying on glideslope so it's nice to be able to goose the engines quickly when I get a bit too low. Having the airbrake out lets me keep the RPM high without getting too fast. Second is engine damage. The way it's modeled in the Su-25T, an engine can take some damage but still be capable of operating at something like 95% RPM. But when it's like that, there's a chance that if you throttle back to low RPM, the engine may not be able to come back to high RPM at all or without a long delay. I've crashed a bunch of times because I couldn't get 1 or both engines to come back to high RPM when damaged. Having the airbrake out on landing lets me keep the RPM higher without getting too fast and reduces the chance that I'm going to effectively lose an engine or 2.

      @@funky-sim I think you can achieve the same by flying an appropriate AoA that gives you 260-270kph, you'll need above 85% N1 to hold a 3 m/s descent rate, with much better control. If you try a stabilized approach a few times, you'll get much much better at controlling the aircraft. The Su25 is a superb aircraft to learn to fly, it's basically a high powered cessna, everything manual. It doesn't even have a rudder corellator, as you can tell by the adverse yaw when rolling fast. For approaches, it's worth remembering: pitch for speed, power for rate of descent. Trim it for 270, add power till 3m/s down, should work every time. If heavy, add 10-20kph. Watch your AoA indicator, you should be close to stalling, but not quite. As you pass the threshold, cut power and effectively stall the plane into the ground. Anyway, that's how I learned it, lol. Nice flying btw, good work.

    any general tips that helped you get through the campaign?

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim Місяць тому

      The most important thing is to study the map in the Mission Planner really well before starting the mission. Identify landmarks that will help you know where you are at all times and where the targets are as well as any AAA and SAM you'll want to avoid or kill. Have written notes or map printouts or whatever you need to help you remember those landmarks and your plan. Once you're in the air, you should be able to look around and know exactly where you are and where you expect to find targets. You shouldn't just be flying around randomly killing whatever you find. After that, it'll be helpful in a bunch of the missions if you can keep your wingman alive long enough to help you destroy the targets that contribute to mission success. To do that, you'll often want to anchor him well away from the action. Then go alone to kill the AAA and SAMs that will threaten your wingman. Refer back to the planning you did before the mission. Once the anti-air threat is adequately neutralized, bring your wingman in to kill some targets. Lock something up on the Shkval and tell him to attack your target. Keeping tight control of him like this helps to make sure he won't fly off to random parts of the map seeking out more AAA and SAMs to kill and probably just end up getting killed instead.

    Wait, P9... How long is the campaign?

    • @funky-sim
      @funky-sim Місяць тому

      It's complicated. I don't want to get too deep into how DCS campaigns work in general. This particular campaign has 25 phases (A1-A9, B1-B7, and C1-C9), each with 4 possible missions, so 100 missions total. This mission, C.P9.1, is the first of four possible missions you could get assigned in phase C9. The campaign starts on the third phase (A3), so if you completed each mission successfully on the first try, you'd fly 23 missions. If you don't succeed in a mission, then you'll either re-fly that mission or get dropped back to a mission in previous phase, depending on the mission design and how you failed. Combined with the randomness built into each individual mission, this gives the campaign tons of replay value. You can pop the .cmp file for the campaign open in the Campaign Builder in DCS to see how it's put together. The last mission in this series is C.P9.4, so we're almost there.

      There's a lot of experience involved, but there are some graphics settings that play a big role too, though I don't remember which ones they are. Try setting up a little test mission in the mission editor and maxing out the graphics settings. Find out if you can get a clear picture even if the framerate is unplayable. Then back off the settings one by one until you get back to a playable framerate and maintain a clear picture. Beyond experience and settings, the time of day, time of year, and weather conditions are big factors too. For example, when I go after the first group at 7:50, it's really hard to see them. If this were a winter mission in the middle of a sunny day, it would be really easy to spot those tanks. To counter the conditions, you need to study the map in the mission planner really well so that you know exactly where you expect to find targets. You shouldn't rely on the waypoints too much. You should be able to get up to about 2000 meters altitude and know where you are and where the targets should be just by looking around and spotting landmarks you've studied. Have some written notes or map printouts if you need help remembering the landmarks and where targets should be in relation to them. Then it's just a matter of starting from far enough away (15 km would be plenty), getting your camera in the right area as quickly as possible, and being patient until the targets sort of magically pop out of the background. Once you see them it's almost like you can't un-see them. If you still don't see them and you've gotten too close, just turn around, get some distance, and try again, perhaps from a somewhat different angle. It's amazing how sometimes things are really visible on the second pass that you never saw on the first pass. Once you do see something and blow it up, you've usually got a nice fireball or smoke cloud or big smudge on the ground to help you out on subsequent passes. If you're playing with labels, I'd recommend the dots at most. I find that even the abbreviated text labels make it hard to tell where the target should be in relation to the label. I really do recommend setting up a test mission in the middle of a sunny winter day. Plop down some tanks on a small island or an open area between a couple forests or something else easy to recognize. Start 20 km or so away and practice spotting those targets. Then try playing with time of day, time of year, and weather conditions and see how that changes things. If you don't want to do that, you can try the "Close Air Support - Easy" instant action mission on the Caucasus. Visibility is pretty poor on that one but at least it's a really low threat environment with a variety of targets you can practice spotting and engaging with various types of weapons. If you pop that one open in the mission editor, change the date to something in the middle of winter, and save it off as a new mission file, you should have a pretty good test scenario. Most importantly, stick with it despite the frustration. This game is really hard and this campaign is actually a really difficult way to start playing it. The campaign doesn't ramp up the difficulty. It starts off hard and stays that way through most of it, actually getting easier at the end. It has randomness built in to the mission selection and the contents of each mission so you won't have the same stuff shooting at you from the same locations in different playthroughs of the same mission. Some missions seem designed for you to fail so that you get dropped back to a previous stage of the campaign. Because of all that, this campaign has great replay value but it's a real bear for beginners. That's the reason I put out this campaign video series. I certainly banged my head against it for a lot of hours when I started and I hope to ease that learning curve for a few people. Feel free to reach out anytime if you need help with something.
