Do you have a transcription? I love this song so much
@yazurai4667 No, I don’t have a transcription. I learned the song by listening to a recording and using a lead sheet from the Real Book. The rest of the notes are my spin on it…. 🎷🎶
Thank you sir
@@olabodesunday9137 you’re welcome… what were you doing wrong?

Hey Trevor! Really helpful video. I have been trying the "pop" test on all 4 of my mouhpieces and different reeds, but none of them seem to pop, so im pretty sure im doing something wrong. Any tips?
@velvetimpulse Assuming that your mouthpiece isn’t damaged and your reeds are on correctly, the next step is to check the backs of the reeds to see if they’re warped. Watch at 2:50 where I show you how…
@@TrevorDimoff Thanks! Nop, no wobbling, not warped. And like I said, I can't get to pop on any of my reeds or MPs..
@@velvetimpulse the point of the suction test is to be sure you aren’t leaking air from the reed and mouthpiece because you have to put more air into your horn. If you aren’t hearing a pop then it might be: 🎷 It’s quick and quiet (an ok but not great seal), or 🎷 You’re not effectively sealing the bottom with your palm, or 🎷 Air is leaking between the reed and mouthpiece (usually, but not always, because of a warped reed), or 🎷 You aren’t sucking enough air out of the mouthpiece to suck the reed against the mouthpiece to hear a pop when you release the reed. If you’re sounding good and it doesn’t feel like you’re fighting with your horn don’t worry about the suction test. If it’s a fight, or you’re exerting, to play, the suction test is a great tool to help you identify a potential problem. Let me know what you figure out :)
@@TrevorDimoff My thoughts are: Is the reed positioned correctly on the mouthpiece, perhaps its leaking at the palm of your hand when you try a vacuume test. I wonder if when you play the sax it sounds ok then then its something wrong the way you perform the test.

My sax is squeaking so I put the neck and mouthpiece on my brother's alto and I couldn't squeak if I tried but on my alto it's squeaking a bit
@@king_william40 check your octave key, if it isn’t closing completely you’ll get squeaks.
@TrevorDimoff alright I'll try that thanks
@@king_william40 Let me know if fixes it or not :)
@@TrevorDimoff I practiced today and it seems like it's not squeaking anymore and it looks like it's closing fine to me but If it happens again can you tell me how to fix my octave key because I do think that caused the squeaking
@ Get your sax fixed by a qualified repair professional. The octave key on your neck should have a small space between it and the top of the mechanism on the body of the sax. This prevents accidental squeaks when you move from the lower to upper register. The most common problem with octave keys is too small or no space. You can carefully bend the octave key on your neck to create that space, but if you don’t know what you’re doing it can make the problem worse or break your sax.
I had an extra 500$ so I bought a tenor sax 😭😭 I play it everyday in jazz and concert/marching band lmfao

Did you start out on tenor or alto? (Or clarinet)
@@paulphoenix2778 I started on piano, then clarinet then tenor sax. I studied tenor saxophone for my first music degree, then got a flute, a soprano sax and finally an alto saxophone.
Great tips!! Thanks

@@kex1xik I’m glad that made sense to you 🎶!
I didn’t know that you had to start with a mouthpiece😐
@@Frostwalkhardcor you don’t have to start with just the mouthpiece, but it’s much easier if you do. Some professional brass players practice music and some lip exercises with only their mouthpiece.

@@Frostwalkhardcor that’s awesome 🎶
Hi Trevor, i do enjoy your videos , i am learning how to play dad's saxophone, at 75, some days while playing i squeak a lot, thinking it was the horn i sent it in for a service, any way , after a while trying to work out why i squeak, could having a sore throat cause to squeak, regards mac
@@macahu9374 I’m glad you’re learning from the videos :) A sore throat shouldn’t cause squeaking unless it’s causing you to unconsciously tense up. Assuming your horn is in good repair and your reeds aren’t the problem, squeaking is most often caused by too much embouchure pressure or too much air pressure. Does that make sense?
Mr dimoff im a UA-camr now!! Remember me? Im Mingqi

The really high 🎷 notes are called altissimo notes. I can play them but I like low notes better. I’m not that Guy, he just looks like me :)
F
Thx
You sure it's not caused a lot by the instrument itself moving?
Thanks for asking @canadiodleez5009! When I shook at the end it was definitely horn movement. I wanted to show all those poses on one breath so I didn’t hold each pose for long. Try it with your horn. Even small changes can give you a massive tone improvement 🎷
🚌🚌🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆
😎🎷🎶
Oh man this cool. For guitarists they say our tone is in our fingers but for you guys it’s literally in your whole body!! Amazing. What happens if you wiggle your feet?
@planzed.2 Fortunately the feet don’t affect tone as much because tapping the feet keeps the beat.. haha 😎
Love it. Wow. Are you recording on a Phone?
Yes and I’m using a Rode USB microphone. I record the video with the Rode Capture app so I can set the volume. The iPhone camera app automatically adjusts the volume so the dynamics get squashed. It’s fine for voice but doesn’t work very well with a sax.
@@TrevorDimoff yea, I was wondering. I went through a whole adventure trying to record my sax. And it seemed like you were getting a pretty good sound from your phone. But, the Rhode definitely gives it a boost. But, It occurred to me that something was missing from the phonic picture. Now I know. Man I wish I could hear you live, or with a nicer set-up. No knocking what you are using, but I just remember my experience trying to get a good sound. I just figured I needed a lot more equipment, knowledge, and money to really make it happen. I realized it's notoriously difficult to capture the essence of the saxophone. Unless of course, you spend at least 500 dollars on a mic, and have a nice acoustic treated room, and all other kinds of technical knowledge 😂.Thank you for helping me understand 😀.
I hear what you’re saying. I have the mics, sound interface, treated room and the knowledge. I set a goal of dropping a short a day for a month so I chose an easy setup. I also chose not to edit the audio because it can be time consuming. Even a pro recording is artificial, not because of the effects but because nobody listens to a sax 3 inches from the bell 🎷 The only true sound is live without a mic and the best place to listen is in the middle of the band! 🎵🎶
@@TrevorDimoff Thank you. I feel validated🥲
@@mikeysplace however I can help, brother!
I don’t mind having my scrolling being interrupted by beautiful music
Glad you enjoyed the song. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it helps the algorithm interrupt others :)

Sounds fantastic❤. So silky. I love this. 2 questions, is that an aristocrat? And are you primarily using the the phrygian mode' or is it the harmonic minor🤔
I’m playing a 1929 Selmer, same era and similar tone. It’s mostly D harmonic minor, the chords alternate between D-7 and A7 in that song section. What do you play @mikeysplace?
@@TrevorDimoff I have the YAS-23, nothing fancy. Been playing it for four years now. I played a 1930s aristocrat once, and I loved how velvety the tone was. I thought maybe that's what you were playing. Selmer, nice, beautiful horn!
@@mikeysplace Shh, don’t talk like that about your horn. My first tenor was a Yamaha, we spent a lot of time together. Traded up to a Selmer from the late 70s and then traded it for a 1939 Lady Conn that is still my main horn… You can hear that tenor in this video: ua-cam.com/users/shortsSahY0XTVVzM?feature=share
@@TrevorDimoff Nice, those 30s horns feel good enough ergonomically to play? I know the Buescher I played, little wonky. But the sound was unparalleled. That selmer you were playing looked like it had really good ergonomics. I was surprised about the quality of the buescher especially being almost 100 years old. They just don't make them like they used to! I'll check out the lady Conn👍
@@mikeysplace I wouldn’t call them ergonomic, they have quirks but you learn to adjust. You play old horns for the tone not for speed :) Quick tip, it’s not just the horn… I’m subtoning even in the upper register 😎
Yes, it's a beautiful tune. I like it because it's not only beautiful but it has a sadness in the melody that summer will be ending like everything around us does. Thanks again🙋♀️🎷🎶🎵
