Episode 291: Mastering Your Mind: How Thoughts Shape Your Shape Your Life
Your thoughts create your feelings.
For women with ADHD, negative thoughts and emotions can be particularly challenging. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity for personal growth and mental mastery. By recognizing that our emotions stem from our thoughts, we can better manage our actions and achieve our goals. Mindfulness plays a crucial role in this process, improving attention, enhancing emotional regulation, and reducing anxiety.
Visualization is a powerful tool in this journey. By imagining positive outcomes with strong emotional investment, we can boost motivation and build confidence. The Reticular Activating System (RAS) in our brain plays a key role here, helping us focus on opportunities that align with our clearly set, positive intentions.
It's important to remember that while we can't control external circumstances, other people's actions, or our past, we have full control over our thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. This internal locus of control is where our power lies.
The dialogue we have with ourselves - our inner narrative - is crucial. By consciously shaping our thoughts, we can influence our emotions, behaviors, and ultimately, the results we achieve in life.

I can't believe how much this makes sense to me. I've had such a hard time managing my life and trying to explain myself to my husband. Or the "what's wrong with me" stuff. It literally is my brain chemistry. Hard to believe at 48 I'm finally learning this!! Breaking things down to smallest steps helps a lot.

How necessary is getting diagnosed? I’ll be 70 later this year. I began to wonder several years ago if I was ADD. I assumed not ADHD because I am not the least bit hyperactive. A few of my grandchildren have been diagnosed and a couple of my daughters suggested I might have ADHD. I read your book and I’m convinced. Quite a few of the symptoms you described were true of me when I was younger. For the most part I have been able to create workarounds for myself. As I was listening to your book. I found myself thinking I remember being like that, but I did this and it’s not really an issue now. The main problems I still struggle with are procrastination and being messy. I read Dana K White’s book Decluttering at the Speed of Life and her system has immensely improved my messiness issues. Overall my house is less messy than any previous time in my life, but procrastination keeps it a little messy. My biggest issue with procrastination is that when I procrastinate to the point that a deadline stresses me out, I suddenly have a burst of creativity that makes me do something much better than if I work steadily toward a deadline. I also do well if I do something immediately and way ahead of a deadline. My greatest example of this is as a student, the only time I made less than an “A” on a term paper is the time I forced myself to work steadily towards the deadline. I got a “C” on that one. I feel like even though I hate procrastinating, I get rewarded every time I procrastinate. Other than doing something immediately, I can’t find a workaround. Unfortunately, doing something immediately isn’t often possible. That was a lot of words to ask if I really need to be diagnosed at almost 70. I’m nerdy enough to be curious but frugal enough to not want to spend the money if the only benefit is to satisfy that curiosity. 😂

I love the shoutout for Scrivener! I'm a writer by day, podcaster/astrologer/Tarot reader by night. I don't use Scrivener in a terribly sophisticated way, but I find it invaluable! Neurodivergent here: ADHD + bipolar. Thank you for raising awareness and being honest about your diagnoses. I start a new Scrivener Project once every year or so, and just write everything in there under different files. A document here for interviewing a fire prevention expert, a file there for writing down notes about my family's health. This works great for my newspaper journalism and columns, which tend to run 800 words... there's often need for moving some notes from one newspaper column document within the Project, say, to a longer article I'm planning to pitch elsewhere.

My PCP a Man in his I would say late 30s I'm now in premenapause and My Doctor after I asked and Asked for him to try 1st line Treatment Stimulant Meds?? He Argues with me and says We don't treat Adults with that kind of Medication. He Refused and Refused until now I'm getting another PCP!! I felt like he was treating me like a Drug Seeking Child. He has made me so upset and angry not listening When I tell him I have been on every Antidepressant there is!! They do nothing and have horrible side effects. I have always had a good Vocabulary and I have been loosing my Words. I'm like what is thar word i want to use, it's horrible. Such a pleasure to read your book and just like your situation, my son was newly diagnosed and I stumbled upon my diagnosis trying to help him(literally 3 days ago). Lookin for self help after taking 5 quizzes and a small mental break down I Saw your book and it just stood out to my personality. And reading it 🎉 Wow I feel like a door has been unlocked in my brain and being stuck between relief and fear is freedom and the more I learn unlock these doors, It just feels like all my dots are being connected. I’m just starting on this journey, and I am very excited to see where it leads me and how I can help my son. Thank you for this astounding book. You were able to hold my intention for the entire read. I looked forward to listening in and hearing the way you word things and share your stories and experiences and how it sounds so much like my own. Now in my 40’s what do I do? Is my next exploration 💜🥹I look forward to connecting with you and in truth you are my✨Personal Fairy God Mother Thank You ✨God Bless💜✨

I’m 53 and have engrossed myself in all things about natural health after a busy nursing career. I tried through reading, and courses trying to figure out why my brain felt inadequate and broken, and even tried to ‘reprogram’ my brain through many events put on by the likes of Tony Robbins - but no one ever mentioned ADHD in older females! …. Then about a month ago I found the podcast between Tracey and clutterbug…. OMG! Im trained to read the iris, I am a homeopath and massage therapist and trained to read live blood under a microscope, but my broken brain has kept me small, scared and keeps me from doing what i thought my life’s work would be. My memory retention or articulation of facts is terrible, and I figured why continue to learn when nothing stays in. So your podcasts have been very beneficial and I will continue to improve my superpowers and tactics to combat procrastination problems. We are the quirky personalities in a trained, linear society…. If we all reached our highest potential I do not think the governing bodies could handle such an uprising of pure intelligence and energy 😂 Thank you ❤

This was such a great podcast! I also dislike the term comorbid. I've been using 'co-occurring' instead, and have been trying to help change that narrative in educational settings. I also LOVE the ideas Linda shares about engineering her environment to fit her needs best. This reminds me of Dr. Thomas Armstrong's Positive Niche Construction. Mahalo for this podcast, I'm a huge fan!

I’ve been considering getting a diagnosis in past days and as I listen to this, I’m ticking ALL the boxes! At 50 I’ve always just thought it’s my wild creativity and I had no idea others found all ‘those’ tasks so easy… I have piles of unopened envelopes, I never sit still, constant creative projects on the go, I go until utter exhaustion and I over commit to everything… in the past year I have started to realize this and attempting to put strategies in place to help, but I exhaust myself. Thanks so much for your research!!
