Episode 20 Maiden Voyage
In this episode we take the boat out for the first time! It's a 2-hour trip to the lake. The boat trailered well and was fairly easy to set up once we got to the ramp. Arkansas (where I am) does not have the best winds during the summer and early fall. The day we went was the only day with any predicted winds to speak of for the foreseeable forecast. There were gusts up to 18-20knots, so probably not the best for testing the new boat but we went for it. She sailed well overall. I apologize for the vertical bars and sometimes poor quality of some of this video. I was focused on the boat and trying to do everything I needed to, so I didn't get to video any. Thankfully my family was there to take some pictures and video. As mentioned in the video, there are a few things I'm planning on changing now that we've been out once. Thanks for watching!
This is my first time building a boat. I'm a do-it-yourself guy and don't claim to be an expert. I love creating new things and learning new skills.
The plans for this boat can be purchased at www.stevproj.com.
The background music is from UA-cam files.

Episode 19 Rigging and Sails
Переглядів 8762 місяці тому
In this episode I get the rigging and sails put on the boat. By the end of this video, I'm ready to get this boat onto the water. I still have some finish work to do inside the cabin but I'm going to get the boat sailing before I do that. So the next video should be of me taking the boat out for the first time! Thanks for watching. The blocks and most of the lines are ordered from West Marine. ...

In this episode I am installing the electronic components of the boat including the trolling motor, the running lights and a bilge pump. All the stuff I used I bought on Amazon. I'm not affiliated, I'm just listing it below in case you are curious. Here's the list, somewhat close to the order it appears in the video: 1. 4 AWG wire: a.co/d/aHY3a78 2. Copper ferrels: a.co/d/3ogIIbh 3. Power cut m...

In this episode I complete a few smaller miscellaneous projects as I get closer to finishing the boat. There is some trim for the transom and around the cabin opening. I also install a plate of aluminum along the keel to help protect it from damage. Finally I finish the sliding top hatch for the cabin and the companionway cover. There is some 3D printed trim shown that I printed on my A1 printe...

In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build I will varnish the rub rails and paint the hull. I'm using Halcyon Clear varnish for the mahogany rub rails. I used a quality brush for this. Next, everything bel...
Episode 14 Steering Wheel

In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build, I will build the steering wheel for the boat. The plans I'm following recommend building the wheel from 3/4 inch thick material and then using a router to round the edges but I wanted to make mine on the lathe. I bought a lathe from Harbor Freight and got to work. I realized quickly that I was not going to be able to turn 6 identical sp...
Episode 13 Hatches and Fiberglass for the Cabin

In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build, I am fiberglassing the cabin top and building the hatch for the companionway. In episode 10, I built the cabin top and strayed from the plans for the boat and redesigned the cabin. Since I deviated from the plans, I'm on my own now for how to build some of the components like the sliding companionway hatch. I begin by tabbing the cabin ...
Episode 12 The Spars
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build, I build the spars for the boat. I'll make the mast, the boom, the gaff and the bowsprit. The mast was the most difficult of the spars because it is tapered and rounded. I used a spar makers jig to help this process. I found myself impressed with the boatbuilders of old to figure out tricks such as this jig. I hope you enjoy the video! S...
Planer Stand From from Leftovers

I needed a stand for my planer that would allow the outfeed of the planer to end up at the same height as my table saw and assembly table. This was needed to better enable me to plane heavier beams by myself so I can continue on with my sailboat build (you can find those videos on my channel). The main goal was to build this with only scraps of lumber that I had laying around the shop. After de...

Episode 10: The Cabin Top

In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build, I stray from the plans for the boat and redesign and build the cabin top. From the beginning, I wanted my version of the boat to have a more streamlined appearance. To accomplish this, I drew the top deck of the boat and the cabin bulkhead to scale in Google Sketchup. I then played with different designs for the cabin top until I had a ...

In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build, I fabricate and install the rub rails on the hull of the boat. Episode 8: Building the Cockpit Seats
Переглядів 4,8 тис.Рік тому
In this episode of the Stevenson Weekender Sailboat build I will work on the seats in the cockpit of the boat. Following the build plans taking some mild artistic license, I completed the starboard and port cockpit seats. Wow! That is just awesome. It looks Evan better on the water. She looked like she was handling the wind with ease. It would be nice to be able to have all the halyards come back to the cockpit to raise and lower the main and the jib. It looks like that is what your doing....dang, that is a really nice boat. 🎉

I did use stainless screws. Hopefully it won’t corrode too quickly since I’ll be in fresh water and it’ll be on the trailer most of the time. But if it does, that aluminum strip was fairly cheap.

Hey, do you sell the gooseneck backing and jib hanks? They both look really sharp. I don't have a 3D printer and am starting my weekender build. I love how tyou are able to finish things off...very professional. Also, I think the Stevensons should consider using your ideas and videos as a companion to the one they made years ago. Nice price of work. I didn't see a video of you all sailing it. Any updates or things you would of done differently?

Thanks for your kind words! I took the boat out for the first time on Sept 7th. I'll be making a video soon about that (it went well). In that video, I'm planning on talking about things that I liked and a few changes I'm planning on making. I'd be happy to talk to you about printing the gooseneck fittings and the hanks. Send me an email MakingTime2023email@gmail.com. I will say the jib hanks I show in this video didn't work out. They didn't slide up and down the forestay smoothly, so I printed some oval chain-link looking hanks that worked much better. I'll probably show those in the next video as well.

@@makingtime2023 I'll be looking for the video. I went out on the Stevenson site. It doesn't look like they are doing much. I will definitely spread the word on any forums I'm on of your video. I have Stevenson's video (on VCR tape) and together those videos give a great overview of the build. Your grandchildren are going to have great memories of you and the times they went sailing with Grandpa.
