i had a weird experience the other day. At 7or 8 in the morning, I noticed something strange going on around one hive, I thought that maybe they were swarming. I sat down in my usual chair, about 20' away to watch. Then, one by one, I started getting harassed by bees, which they never do at that spot. Then I started thinking that maybe they were getting robbed, although I didn't think that the flight pattern in front of the hive looked like robbing- you know, that zig-zag aggressive flying in front of the hive? Anyhow, after getting stung 3 times in the head, I hightailed it out of there, grabbed a veil, and slapped an entrance reducer on just that one hive. Awhile later, everything seemed back to normal, and no more pissed off bees, looking for trouble. I guess it was robbing.....?

I would like to add castor oil to the mixture as it plumps your lips and moisturizes but I'm not sure how much to use. I think it would be too much to use in equal parts with the coconut oil but maybe 10 drops like the peppermint/eucalyptus oil would be okay, what do you think?

No screen bottom boards. What my hive would look like if I lived in Canada where you live. I would insulate the top, sides and bottom with at a minimum R5. That's 1in foam board. They are not Native to North America and the religions they are from are not cold, it is warm. You need to take that into consideration when keeping them. Same with Plants. If you want to grow Tropical Anything help them out with temperature to be successful. In August of last year I have around 125 to 130 hives. In October, after my winter splits, I had 170. I treated them twice with 4 grams per hive. I came out of winter with 140 couple. I insulate the top in my area's. In my opinion I came out of winter at 110% survival rate. Meaning I gained Bees. I HAD 0% loss. say what you want but, Bees are like people, they are resilient. But we all have our limits. They can build them up but it takes Years. Genetic aren't changed in a year, it takes time. Mites are the cause of most of the loss in bee colonies but you don't have to Throw the Kitchen sink at them to get them to survive the winter no matter where you put them. start thinking about how they survive Naturally, without Your supposed help. They can do some things on their own but Natural treatments, OAV. I have found have helped me keep my bees happy and thriving. Sorry your girls didn't make it. Wishing you the best with these hives. Wish I could come up there and help you.

A combination of wet and cold is a major obstacle for honey bees, spring can be harder on bees then winter sometimes. It sounds like you have come up with a plan and are and the bees are going to build back up for a great season.
