I hate to comment multiple times but in that scene with the RPG the kid said he saw it in a movie. There’s a scene in Beverly Hills Cop 2 where Judge Reinhold uses one and they show you the process of firing it exactly the way the kid describes it. I didn’t notice that til last year but that had to be what was being referenced

I have been making a series of videos about the story, religion, and philosophy of Wishmaster, so, of course, I do think it has stood the test of time. I agree with some of your criticisms, though. One correction: The Djinn does get Ariella (the store assistant) to say “I wish to be beautiful forever”. Granted, he did literally put the words into her mouth, so to speak, but she did wish for it. However, I do agree with the point you made afterwards: that the wishes need to be substantial. It shouldn’t work otherwise. One of the things that annoys me about the sequel is one of the very first wishes is when a cop tells him to freeze. The Djinn then freezes him, which is totally ridiculous. That was a command not a wish. I’m so angry with the writers of Wishmaster 2 about that, it really pisses me off. With Josh, I think it was a substantial wish, because he was in agony and he really did want the pain to stop. In that case, the Djinn simply took advantage of the fortuitous circumstances. I like your theory about the King. He does seem a bit too dumb for a real King!

As a horror, this definitely stood out as being quite original at least in concept, the idea that genie's aren't these magical disney like spectres that grant happiness, but in truth actually creatures of pure evil, who thrive on human suffering by granting wishes in order to rule over the mortal plain. Fair some of the deaths weren't all that creative, but the intention is there. Andrew Divoff is absolutely perfect as Nathaniel/The Djinn, he just captures that menace with tints of humor, that you want in a horror movie villain. We can pretend, that the series ended at Wishmaster 2. The deaths are a bit more brutal, but yes as you said, a lot sillier. As for 3 and 4, euuuurghhhhh, I like to pretend they don't exist.

I find myself in that camp of people who like Beverly Hills cop 2 better than the first. Mainly Because it was on HBO when I was a kid growing up ALOT (Love that one of you mentioned that btw). Plus I grew up as a fan of the late great Tony Scott's style that I still am in awe with to this day and that style somehow worked with this type of movie. I'm a working cameraman in Tv now so the Scott brothers style of the 80's influenced me heavy.

The film is a masterpiece on all levels, and it is a logical fallacy to equate or dismiss the Holocaust or true attempts at genocide with whatever deadly problem is going on at the moment. That's a cheap rhetorical equivalence that shows up an ugly bias and/or susceptibility to demagoguery. Certainly, Israel should be trying to minimize civilian casualties (and peacefully protesting against deaths of civilians on both sides is fine), but I haven't seen violent protests breaking out over the past 2 years over civilian victims of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Yemeni civil war, in the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, etc., etc. As for the film itself, certainly the cinematography is gorgeous even though the subject matter is so ugly. Schindler is somewhat sanitized in the movie as well - he was certainly in it for the money, right up to the end. To be fair to Spielberg, there were details that weren't known at the time the film was made. Though he did keep over 1000 people alive, he was also hoping to preserve his business and the money he spent keeping his workers alive was gleaned from slave labor, so I understand your point about the "White Savior" trope. His character arc did happen, and he did go from being a thorough Nazi just out to make a buck to viewing his Jewish workers as people, though perhaps as not as powerfully as depicted. Amon Göth was a true villain, and toned down in the film - would be nice to have his character explored more in-depth - he was a cultured, well-off, outwardly normal guy in civilian life and shows that anyone can quickly change into a monster. I can forgive Spielberg for the dramatic license and wanting to make a picture that people would actually go to see. As it stands, the film makes one experience and think and examine one's self in a way few films have ever done - a major achievement. Agree that it should be back in theaters (after all, they are putting _Lord_ _of_ _the_ _Rings_ back on screens this summer), though it might not change minds in the current climate with some anti-semites already dismissing it. Would be interested if you 2 have any thoughts on _Zone_ _of_ _Interest_ from last year? I'm not Jewish, but yes, "Never forget!"
