The Rogue Rigger
United States
Приєднався 6 лют 2021
Rigging and Sailing are my passion (Besides my Family).
My name is Ryan Nelson and I am a professional Sailboat Rigger in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have been professionally rigging sailboats for over 15 years. 7 years ago I started Rogue Rigging, my own Sailboat Rigging Company that is based out of the Berkeley Marine Center Boat Yard. I work on projects from re-rigging laser to Re-Rigging 45' plus cruising boats.
I own and race several boats (yes my wife is aware of my collection). I have a Laser which I race locally and have campaigned all over the country. I also have a Columbia 5.5 Meter that I race with my kids on the Oakland/Alameda Estuary. My other boat is a Prototype Mini Transat 6.50 that I race around the Bay Area. Finally I have an International 505 that I have been campaigning up and down the west coast for the past 20 years.
Follow me on some of my many sailboat rigging projects and sailing adventures.

Episode 43 Big Boat Series 2024 Spin Trimmer POV
In this episode of The Rogue Rigger I show you my point of view as the Spinnaker Trimmer on the Farr 400 Astra for this years Rolex Big Boat Series out of the St. Francis Yacht Club.
This was a pretty windy race that started off the west side of Treasure Island, then upwind to Blackaller Buoy (By Fort Point), back down wind to a navigation buoy off of Treasure Island, back upwind under the Golden Gate Bridge to Point Diablo, then back down wind to Blossom Rock (between Alcatraz Island, Pier 39 and Treasure Island), then back upwind to a buoy a half mile off of Crissy Field and finally a short downwind to the finish in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club.
This was the sixth race of the week and the second race of the day for us. It was blowing 20-22 with gusts in the upper 20's. Unfortunately for us our boat has a "Bad" ORC handicap rating and we were put in the wrong fleet and did not stand a chance to correct out on top. We had a blast pushing ourselves and the boat to the limit all week. This boat rewards hard work! We were regularly seeing high teens in boat speed with some decent chunks of low twenties. Love it!!
This was the boats first actual regatta as Team ASTRA. We all came a away super stoked and can't wait get back out on the race course battling for places!

Переглядів 269Місяць тому
In this episode of The Rogue Rigger I take you on along for our first race on the Farr 400 "ASTRA." This was a great opportunity to finally line up next to other boats. It was a good first race, we learned a bunch more about the boat and we keep making improvements on crew work. Unfortunately in the second race we had a great start, a great first beat only to have another boat loose control at ...

In the 40th episode of The Rogue Rigger we take you along for a ride on our International 505 for the last race of a three day regatta up at the Columbia River Gorge. We were blessed with three days of racing in 25knots of breeze, air temperatures in the upper 70's and a ripping ebb tide(Its a river, the "tide" is always flowing upwind), this is why we travel up here! This was our last race for...

In this episode of The Rogue Rigger I take you on along for one of our practice sessions on the recently restored Farr 400 "ASTRA." The boat was shipped out from the east coast and brought to a Bay Area yard to be stripped of all its hardware, repainted, new hardware installed and then re-commisioned. I was lucky enough to get to work on her by replacing all of the running rigging and doing som...

What is your pro tip to replace an old wind sensor cable with a new wind sensor cable in the conduit? How do you connect the new cable, with a NMEA connector, to the old cable so that it's small enough to slide all the way through the conduit? The mast is a ~65 foot Z-spar installed on a Lagoon 450 catamaran? Thank you in advance
Attach a tag line to existing/old wind transducer cable. Pull the old cable out with the tag line, then use the same tag line to pull the new cable in. Can go smoothly, but it’s a boat project anything can happen. 😊
great vudei but cmon richard! trim!
😂
What’s the button that you press on with your foot? Is it for the winch?
That disconnects and connects the pedestal to the two primary winches.
Yes it is. A-270
Love that chafe sleave splice. I will definitely use that. Great stuff.
Hi. Is this a wireteknik swagger? If so which model is it? Thanks
Yes, an A 270
thanks, always a pleasure to see American craftsman at work mechanic, welder, carpenter... real professional
Fun!
Cool video Ryan!
I LOVE driving up and down I-5 and seeing you guys! Reminds me of your Treasure Island Laser videos...
Very nice!
I have a Parker 5o5 and I was wondering if I can chat with you, I'm so lost with this thing
Definitely hit me up! I have re-rigged a bunch of different 505's over the years.
Why not add some glass in the bow to make it solid and just drill a hole through it and add a bushing of some sort for a dyneema loop?
I have done that in the past, this was the way I wanted to go with this project.
Love the use of the ubolt with the low friction ring.
Awesome!
Hey you are making a video for 2005 to 2024 bruh why are you doing this
Anyone want to sponsor me for race to alaska?
Just out of curiosity, that steering does not seem to be Ackerman steering. It seems to be antiackerman. Is there a reason for that?
отпидарасили лодку - как из магазина !! ))
Would love to see more details on the bow sprit changes. Great video! Thanks
Do you intend on coming along to the 505 worlds in Adelaide, Australia in early 2025!? Hope to see you there, we want lots of international visitors!
Nice video. Great to see Sta-Lok installation up close. Thanks very much!
Great detail, thanks
Jeez, this is brilliantly restored and upgraded. A steal at 20K. If it was in Norway, I'd buy it in a flash
Love it! Even more, loved finding you from our anchorage in the USVI as I'm researching solutions to our problematic Furlex!
Great job! will also upgrade my five with some similar features (can you also upload your videos with higher resolution? Would be great with even sharper pictures.....
Rotate the mast and you will have a full Penguin setup with the movable shrouds
Everyone knows new rigging and carbon bits adds 2 knots of boat speed :)
Man thats a lot of strings! Looking good!
Thanks!
Nice job!
Thanks for sharing your work - appreciate the detail you are willing to show!!
I’ve been watching (in love with) this boat for 15 years in Berkeley. She’s lovely and you did an amazing job restoring!
I like it.
I have same boat ! How much for this great job? Thank you so much
Looking at $12,000 for new standing rigging, new halyards, new Harken MKIV 4 Ocean Furler, quick rattle can paint job, crane/yard fees and my install labor.
Where are you located please? My sailboat is in Seabrook NH!
San Francisco Bay Area
We can all see exactly how you managed to herniate 3 disks while sailing your 505! Glad you are back at it, though, great footage!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Somebody buy this boat, I want to see what the next boat is going to be.
I enjoy your videos and looking forward to seeing what your next project will be.
Мусор…
Cool boat. Does it have a lifting point for a crane, or is it trailer launch only?
Yes, it has a single point lifting bridal.
@@theroguerigger6207 Welp, I hope someone else buys your boat, because if I bought it, it would end my marriage and straight up ruin my life! Looks fun though.
Aha, the full video!
here we R
Stank
Huh but nobody on the rail
Maybe give about 80% more detail, LOA, LWL, weight, draft, video of the inside, some history on the boat etc etc. No idea what "full carbon" means in your lexicon
Good Call, I added dimensions to the description. Full carbon means that all of the laminate is carbon fiber with a foam core. I will add a below deck video. The boat is feature inn a lot of my videos so you can see it in action and down below.
Right? Wouldn't want to waste his time.
New video is 👌
@@oliverbeaty6272it's sailed PHRF on the Pacific coast. Maybe there's more than a handful of minitransats on the west coast but I'd be surprised. Most people looking to do a Pacific crossing in a boat of this size are looking at an express 27 or Moore 24. Most days I forget the class that spawned this boat exists because I'm half a world away from it. It's a very cool boat but mini transat is extremely niche in the West
Or maaaaybe a Santa Cruz 27
How much? Sorry saw the price in the description.
Looking forward to your next video mate
Heyo! Great vid. About to use it on a 12mm Dyneema double braid. What measures would you use?
Nice video. It would have been more helpful if you either showed or described the process of replacing the connector plate.
Yes, it was good to hear it Can be done, and interesting to hear what went wrong and what you were going to do, but I still couldn't figure out how you were going to manage to do it : o Maybe you could do a demo at some stage, on the ground, of how it was done.
Nice. Thanks for doing these!
