Those irimi excercises with unfinished throws are terrible for the back....I outright refuse to do those....Waite's Sensei(Yamada) has had back problems for decades.

His arts are very smooth but it seems he puts a bit of acceleration at the end of the throw, uke has to be ready for that.

it's not cheap to train here, but from what i've heard it's a world class aiki dojo. i'm still trying to figure out the kind of style i want but this is up there with all of them. the other one i'm considering is academie martiale serei and a few others

Is the technique presented in the video a kihon form in your school, i.e. one required at exams, or a variation of a basic technique? I have seen both Yoshimitsu Yamada sensei and Waite sensei perform this technique also in tachi waza, so I am wondering whether it is required from students to perform nikkyo that way.

For the sake of clarity: the title of the clip and the note below the clip window may be a bit misleading. The term "katatetori" (without an indication of the "hanmi") usually refers to an attack from a gyaku hanmi position while the technique shown by Bernath sensei is ai hanmi katatetori kokyu-ho.

He says roughly: - don't focus on one person at a time, keep awareness of the whole space. - keep moving around in such a way that they have to chase you. - don't grab on and try to throw, just send them where you want them (without grabbing) and control the space.

Of course I can agree that both techniques are somewhat similar, but... Basically, in katatetori tenchi nage (the heaven-earth throw) uke is unbalanced by directing his grabbing hand towards the tatami, while in irimi nage the uke is unbalanced by holding his head, neck, collar or shoulder. This refers to kihon techniques of course.

Maybe... What would you consider katatetori iriminage and what would you consider katatetori tenchinage? Which are the main differences when you do it?

ikkyotoshi? I thought this technique is called aiki otoshi. But then again, every school may name things differently.

@MegaHirsute . Yes, they can. And they do. But their way to explain the technique is to break it into part and highlight details they consider important for us to pay attention. Maybe you should check the whole video and see Sensei doing the technique without stopping. There are also other videos where he performs the complete movement non-stop. =) And yes, everybody is different. Different from O'Sensei, from Tamura Sensei, from you, from me, etc etc ...
