From the Shenandoah Harmony Words: Charles Wesley, 1745 Music: Neely Bruce, 1989 1. How long Thou faithful God, shall I here in Thy ways forgotten lie? When shall the means of healing be the channels of Thy grace to me? 2. Sinners on ev'ry side step in, and wash away their pain and sin, but I, a helpless sin-sick soul still lie expiring at the pool. 3. Thou cov'nant Angel, swift come down, toda...

Lamb of God - In the Sacred Harp Tradition
I stumbled upon this music a few years ago through the soundtrack for a film and I must say as an atheist I still found it deeply moving. I heard some scared harp music today on the radio in Australia and it made me remember the singing that I heard in Tonga 50 years ago; an odd connection. Is this possible? Did missionaries bring this style of singing to the Pacific islands? Does anyone know something about this?
I was reduced to tears the first time I heard this song. Very beautifully sung here ❤
I love this. Thanks for the post.
I’m so sorry you lost your babies. It’s a heartbreak only pet owners feel deeply, since they are family members. From your video, it’s absolutely apparent you loved both and gave them a life full of happiness. Westies wrap their paws around our hearts and don’t let go….ever. My Westie, Sophie (she’s still my thumbnail), died last September. One day, her back legs feel from beneath her, then the pain started. Two days later, we had to put-her-down….she was in agony from an agressive malignant tumor on her spine. Sophie was only 12. We were with here as she drifted away. Sophie was my daughter’s first dog, and hearing her cry broke my heart. I petted Sophie until the end, told her “how much we love you” and “you’ve been a wonderful part of our family.” I’m crying while typing. I still sleep w/ her favorite stuffed toy….some may think I’m crazy, but I don’t care. You took wonderful pictures of each baby. They knew you made them the center of your world, and would do anything to comfort them. I pray your pain eases with time. Sorry for the long post. Your video reminded me of my Sophie. I pray God blesses You and Your’s Greatly. Take care of yourself.
Sooo beautiful!
I love this video. You must live in the country. This looks like where I live in GA. Deer walk across my yard, but I have friends who hunt them, which I don't. Thanks for sharing.
I am very sorry for the loss of your special member of your family. My prayers will stay with you.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼 He was the sweetest...
@@dragonlady2264 I am sure
Thanks for such a kind reply.
@@dragonlady2264 You are very welcome. I know what it is like to lose that special part of a family. I hope that you, your husband, and all of your others will come together as you go through this time of grief and sorrow
Dont let it die
Sacred Harp singing’s best hope of survival is amongst people who believe what they are singing.
@@ONEFAITHofJESUS I always wanted to sing this so badly. Just couldn't grasp it. I love to hear it.
We are the Haynes and Wooten family of Alabama and we sing at the family reunion every year.
I thought that the revival started with the folks in Chicago- Ted Mercer and Judy Hauff, and before the internet.
Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful to see David and Clark again after so long.
Good stuff.
I love this kind of singing. I recently found my birth family, since I was adopted as an infant. Many of my blood relatives are probably in this very congregation, in the above video (my maternal blood line are from the Hickox/Lee/Strickland/Crews lines, in the Hoboken/Brantley/Ware county areas). Arthur David and Mary Dell Hickox were my maternal grandparents. When I look at the faces here, and hear these voices, my blood sings and I feel a part of myself in this. Thank you for posting this. Little by little, as I learn more about my origins, I feel more connected.
Thanks so much for making that connection here. A guitarist friend way back tried to explain Sacred Harp w/ the 'shape note' thing to me. As a drummer though it kinda went in an ear and out the other! But I don't remember hearing at all about this *community* that lives and breaths this music. Extraordinary documentary for being only 10 min long about them ... very beautiful.
Magnificent !
I'm a cradle Catholic, but some of my ancestors on the Protestant/Evangelical side had Kentucky connections. Thanks to a librarian friend for taking me to a singing in Chicago during a conference several years ago
Same folks burned women alive for the crime of being a "witch" for fucks sake.
I learned Sacred Harp Music in Goshen Indiana in early 2000’s it’s still music 🎶 🎼 I love to hear
Powerful
Wonderful.
I cry when I hear Sacred Harp music, my precious mother loved this music and told of the many times in her youth she went to singings and we had the book in our house , I was more interested in rock music. How many times I rue the fact that I did not show interest in mama’s music. At seventy nine years old my eyes are full of tears listening to this video, good bye mama!
idk why u put this here but i like it :)
Purely for fun. ...
Are they still meeting? I live a few counties away and I'd like to hear it in person.
I don't know if they still meet ... since covid. I can try and find out ...
@@dragonlady2264 thanks. I would love to visit . I have been thinking about doing this in the Worth County area.
@@UGAboy1974 Reply from a regular Hoboken singer: We are having monthly sings in June and September (local night sings) from 7-9, the Tri-State Convention (which rotates between AL, FL, and GA) which has been cancelled for this year, a New Year's Eve Sing, and our all day sing in March. We are looking at current events and will decide closer to time about whether or not we feel it is safe to have the New Year's Eve and all day sing in March. All of our sing reminders and updates are posted to our Facebook page, Hoboken Sacred Harp.
My grandfather taught this music in East Tennessee
this stirs my soul in a way it has never been before......
ua-cam.com/video/jpJ7wgGQcgk/v-deo.html I never knew what type of music this was called but i found it haunting but calming and intriguing. I can imagine how it would feel in a big echoey room
Look up Alan lomax wooten family. I didn't know it was sacred harp music.. Fascinating and haunting
I’m one of that family, I’m a Haynes
This music is not part of my Catholic religious tradition, but I find it compelling and beautiful in its own way. Thank you for sharing this.
In many ways its similar to chants used by groups like the gregorian monks, this just has more of an early modern and german influence to it rather then medieval or renaissance latin feel to it.
Yes, thank you Lord for Sacred Harp coming to the internet, otherwise I would never have known such beauty. Thanks to David Lee and co for working so hard to keep this going. From my Australian heart to all who sing this.
Yes! Come visit us in America and we would love to sing with you! There are also Sings in Germany, England, and Ireland.
God is good. This is the sound pf his people. There is a desperation in sacred harp hymns. No bs. Its real thirst for god. We cannot let it die
Time traveling
Does anyone know what the monitary value for a, The Sacred Harp by W.M. Cooper 's revised and improved version fifth edition printed and published in Dothan Alabama in 1909 ?

Wonderful video. Are there any good recordings of Hoboken singing they have such a beautiful sound.
R.D. Dragon oh yes, there are a LOT of Hoboken recordings. Maybe search for “cooper book” sacred harp... If you can’t find them, let me know. I am sure I have some in my Sacred Harp playlist. Or you can just go directly to my playlist...

That was nice, my family sings sacred harp. We are the Haynes family of Sand Mountain Alabama and we have had a reunion and singing for 118 years straight now. Thanks for the song.
