Share your experiences of young onset dementia animation
As part of a campaign to improve the experience of diagnosis and to raise awareness of young onset dementia, we asked people to share their experiences of living with young onset dementia.
We asked our audience to answer three questions which were drafted in consultation with people affected by young onset dementia.
Our first question asked if people felt young onset dementia had taken anything away from their lives. This animation shares the real-life stories of five of the people who responded.

I am interested in learning about the medication Julie is taking that she said helped her. I am also interested in learning about where I can find information on the pca group she is a part of. We are in the United States yet information is still helpful. Thank you in advance.

How very fortunate these people are to (rightly) have had the input & support of professionals working specifically with young onset dementia. This is so badly needed to be the norm. My own experience, and that of my sister, has been absolutely horrendous. She started displaying early signs & symptoms of dementia aged 55, whilst fit & energetic, full of life & vigour, working & raising grandchildren. Her long- controlling & abusive husband covered up same so as to exploit her financially & psychologically, closely followed by her son who saw his inheritance being placed at risk! It was only because I was a senior nurse and my husband a medical dr that we were able to recognise the possibility of a dementia diagnosis. Even involving police, GP, social workers and safeguarding teams we had to fight to protect her from harm & to seek help as we weren’t taken seriously. It has traumatised all three of us immensely (me, husband & sister). For the past 3yrs we’ve received no age-related support or understanding whatsoever, my dear sister suffering more than any of us. I believe that if a young onset dementia team had been involved, the situation would have been managed very differently. I hope & pray that young onset dementia services will be available to all families living with this tragic diagnosis. This group of people have specific age related needs which are most definitely not being met in most places.

I met this doctor on UA-cam called Dr Alaho Olu , i got in contact with him and ordered for his (ALS) disease herbal medicine. I used it for 21days. All of a sudden I just got my test result and it's negative. I went to another hospital to get retested to be sure and it is still negative. I am so excited today that I am cured..

Iron deficiency and iron overload can *both* lead to dementia, although iron overload is more common in fair-skinned people. Excerpt from a Cleveland Clinic article: *The inherited form of hemochromatosis is more common in white people with ancestors from Northern Europe. It’s less common in people of African-American, Hispanic, Asian or American Indian descent.* Most of us pop these supplements daily and they are possibly wreaking havoc in our bodies. Anyone who is truly iron-deficient would crave foods such as liver, spinach, etc., especially if they have access to a wide variety of iron-rich foods. Even if the tests show a low level of vitamin D or whatever it doesn't necessarily mean that there is a true deficiency; it possibly just means that *the body isn't storing what it doesn't need.* If supplements are making you feel worse it could be that your body is overloaded on what it doesn't need! We should tread with caution before popping vitamin/mineral supplements with abandon.

That's scary. We r making major breakthroughs, with changes in the brain. My sister had Lewy Body Dementia, for 7 years. Her mind and body went. At the end, she couldn't walk or talk. She passed away peacefully, at the assisted living facility, The Residence, in Darien, CT, on Jan 28, 2021. I salute, the medical staff, including caregivers and Hospice, for taking such great care of my sister. Blessings and prayers to all of u.

No one in this film is under the age of 57. PLEASE talk about & research dementia in children and young people. I know a child who was under 10 with dementia from Batten's disease; my son was only 16 with severe dementia from his brain tumour. There is no public awareness of this. Thank you.
