Have you tried using the green cutting mat face up as you would use it for cutting? I think the problem is the mats rather than the dies.

When looking at measurements you must notice that they give the measurement if the pieces attached. Not the actual size of the dies. So the width of the two together was probably the 4” of so you thought was the actual height.
