    You connected it incorrectly. A choke should be in series with the transmission line. Read K9YC’s choke cookbook for the correct way to add a choke. Liquid electrical tape will insulate the cores, but you want them to dissipate heat. A common mode choke attenuating rain…where did you come up with that theory?

    • @melming8751
      @melming8751 4 місяці тому

      This is not a "common mode choke". It is just to remove the static. I use a 1:1 common choke connected to the coax feedline. It works amazingly well.

    This was truly fascinating, thanks! It was posted almost 2 years ago, so I'm wondering if there have been any further development? I notice that Array Solutions no longer carries the Shared Apex antenna. But whether it's that one or the experimental new one demonstrated at the end of the video, I would love to get some more information on these. I happen to have a healthy amount of land in the mountains, a super quiet environment, and no neighbours, so I'd love to experiment and see what I might cook up here. Cheers!

    Bob, this is pretty much what I have planned for my 160m inverted L. I currently have a 6BTV over 32 ten-meter radials fed by buried coax. I’m going to use a switch and a short length of coax to run to the base of a 5/16 λ wire with a 15m vertical run (the best I can do) and place an otherwise unused MFJ-901B T network antenna matcher in a weatherproof enclosure at the inverted L’s feedpoint. I’m hoping to use the existing radials and run it on not just 160m, but 80m as well. Avoiding the 1/2 λ on 80m will hopefully get the impedance on that band down to something manageable for the matcher. I’m pretty sure it’ll play on 160 just fine. It’s still 20°F and snowy here in Alaska, so there’s plenty of time to ruminate further! 73 DE KL7JBB

    I watched your video and I want to mention some concerns regarding DT. I actually talked to Joe Taylor about how critical DT is and, well, it isn't. The time window for decoding FT8 contacts is +/- 2.5 seconds and +/- 1 second for FT4. Not my words, but the words of the author of the software. - The other part is long delays can also show up when using a slow computer to decode FT8 signals. WSJTx is hugely dependent on the speed of the computer. If you have a slow computer and you are decoding lots of signals, your DT times will increase. The DT time is calculated based on the clock and the time that the decode is completed. I have personally tested that theory on a slow laptop and you can quickly see DT values increase directly related to the number of stations in the passband. - When working another station, he may or may not choose the first station in the stock, but may first choose the station with the highest SNR so that that contact can be completed reliably and quickly. Please take some time and contact the author to confirm my comments on how critical DT isn't. 73, de va3mw

    Thank you for this video and explanation. My thoughts on the Fox answering to FT8 responses multiple FT8 hound people in one FT8 15 second interval. This is not standard across all versions and FT8 packages. This causes confusion. Typically my IOS version of SmartSDR for my FlexRadio does not follow this FT8 convention. My request to the developer to add this Fox/Hound capability was rejected. I have to carefully watch to see when I get the RR73 and manually log as the software never does automatically, and I’m never sure if the FT8 Fox node has logged and completed too, until I see in whatever logging site the DXpedition is using. The thing I have liked about FT8 is the standard for the conversation, but there seems to be a loss of standards in using Fox mode by DXpedition teams. I do hope a standard can be conveyed to all of the FT8 forked versions and it made clear as to why this needs to be agreed upon my as many developers as possible… thanks again for this video. 73 all Merry Christmas and God be with you all.

    Nice presentation but I’m wondering why, as an owner of a microHam Double-six and Single-six antenna switch, that you did not include the MicroHam Station Master controller in your presentation. I have a couple of these boxes and they handle the distribution of all the band and frequency information to any BPF, Linear Amplifier (TX keying w/programmable delay), SteppIR (with safety complete tune before allowing TX, support for external LNA switching, as well as programmable relays and other features. I think it greatly simplifies things and combines many of the things you talk about into one box.

    I was early to make contacts from 9N1, A52, VU7, and XW--all a part of my personal travel and totally personally financed with no donated gear from anywhere. I always thought of real ham radio as a boy with a dipole in a tree and a 40 Watt rig. In a hotel on Andaman Island, I discovered that my first use of their rooftop was now closed with an over roof held down by bolt stubs sticking up over new angled slippery metal roofing. Cautious for myself, I asked the hotel janitor, for a fee, to take my antenna out there and install it. As he clamored over there, I discovered he had a wooden leg! He got up my Cushcraft D-3W and I had fun on 17M with an IC-706. I carried my IC-706 with the two pieces in two separate bags which puzzled the arrival officials who had found the unmarked back part. Travelling alone with no permits in advance, I always told the truth about what my items were. Of course, never lie! Anyone who gets to travel outside the humdrum DX areas, I recommend getting on the air as you can and don't be held back if you lack a dozen or more men with you.

    I gather the call sign for Baker island remains KH1. To see that turned into K1B is extremely irritating to me. However I admit I did sponser E2E, but did keep the E2 of Thailand. I like the things the same in ham radio as much as possible.
