i like both of these peoples works, but Jim Dale didnt seem to read the descriptions of multi characters voices, where Stephen Fry seems like he really took that into account. honestly, i wish they let everybody by either version from anywhere in the world.. having both i prefer fry's work for this book, but i have a HUGE collection of Jim Dale audio books and hes great in most.. most...heh.. what i will say is... i kinda would love to see them do the books togather for a new take, as i think they could split up the characters parts and narration such that it was even better then either version we have now... most people i know who have listened to both(thanks to me) agree with my preferance for fry's take, one flat out cannot take dales voices for a couple main characters, where the voices fry used are much more to description from the books and the annoying voices are reserved for house elves and such that arent huge parts of the overall story, and not talking constantly.. and i cant blme her.. after she said that..i do get it... and its part of what bothered me from the start about Jim Dales perf for this.. though again LOVE his work for other books.

I think it largely depends on who you grew up with. Most people in the United States grew up with Jim’s recordings. Though I would just like to point out that if you are blind, because of what is called the national library service for The Blind, you have a third recording narrated by an American actor who is very good. But Jim is literally the best.

No competition needed, both are great. I love both versions. If I was absolutely forced to choose though, I would probably sway more towards Stephen Fry. I'm from Ireland so the version of this I heard first and grew up with was Stephen's. Jim's version shouldn't be discredited at all. He reads them with such whimsical enthusiasm, that it's infectious. Fry always gave me the vibe of your grandad reading you the story. His version always felt more personal IMO. He didn't have as many unique voices as Dale but I actually prefer that. It feels more realistic. I love both though. No need to have a battle, just appreciate both for what they are.

I think it all depends on which book. Book 1 = Dale Book 2 = Fry Book 3 = Dale Book 4 = Fry (this is considered by many to be one of the best Audio book readings of all time). Book 5 = Fry Book 6 = Fry Book 7 = Dale. Fry takes it 4 to 3 but also because his version of the 4th book is considered one of the best audio book readings ever. That being said, Dales 1st and 7th book are better and those two books are by far the most important, in fact you could literally read just those two books and a short summary of the other books and you'd have a fairly good grasp of the story. So the most important books were better read by Dale.

Dale by far for me. Fry’s excellent but he makes a fraction of the effect.
