Liam Howlett's 50th birthday
Переглядів 12 тис.2 роки тому
Congrats! I want to pay attention to the anniversary by hammering the classic "Voodoo People" riff, on the authentic equipment he used in 1994. But I won't play it faster than 130 bpm, 149 is the original 😉

When you’ve got your covid19 rolls sorted, don’t forget the 91’ ravesound 🔉🕺💾 However I haven’t hoarded myself, since I buy paper from a wholesaler I always tend to have many rolls on hand 🧻
Jilted 25 anniversary
Переглядів 3055 років тому
Back in '94 I quit my guitar lessons and thought music was boring and predictable. Almost immediately after that, The Prodigy released this album that became a real gamechanger for me. I listened and listened and never looked back to my acoustic days. Congratulations "Music for the Jilted Generation" 25 years today on July 4th, 2019!

Saint Stephen and Herod, named "Staffan var en stalledräng" in a Swedish christmas song. Here's a sloppy 303/sampler-jam, as a tribute to a friend whom i was making songs with who passed away 2018 and whose birthday was december the 24.

Setting up a rough mix on my latest acquisition, an 8-bus Mackie. Feeded by all of the W-30's separate outputs spiced with Fx from a single Re-20. Sorry for the poor camera movement, couldn't be bothered filmin it proper due to the excitement havin a console up front. Audio is also poor, cheap home stereo, haven't made room for the desk in the studio yet... For better sound check: soundcloud.co...

Yes, it had a monumental influence on me when I started to sketch tunes in 97. You can also hear snippets of Zeroes And Ones, The Heat and Break & Enter.
My favourite inlay art
great tune, im very curious about the w30. i've been a huge prodigy fan forever now and i have always noticed their tracks change up a bunch unlike other hardcore records of the time. is that due to creative choices or something within the w30?? i heard from somewhere the workflow on the w30 is setout in a way where you gotta map it out first then add samples or whatever. don't know if thats true or not but its interesting.
Thanks glad you found it, poor clip but it was a fun night! The W-30 is limited in its interface yet powerful, which probably makes the way it works unique. It's pretty intuitive to just hammer in notes on the keyboard like I guess Liam did in the recording menu (hardcore). But it also works to purely mathematically calculate a groove in the Micro-editing menu, which I think Armand Van Helden did (house). Since the sequencer lacks loop function, you must instead copy the measures in pieces when you arrange.
@@stoffenl great to know!! thank you for your response!! i remember hearing in an article that liam loves being able to just play everything in manually himself so it gets a different type of groove that isn't copy/paste.. change everything up on a fly!! would love to someday get a w-30 and try it all out for myself! 👍👍
This is great, can you point me to anything that would help me learn how to set the W30 as the master sequencer and use it to trigger other things like a Microkorg? The menu is a bit daunting to the uninitiated! It’s a great machine though
I was hoping to get a tutorial on sequencing, not a show from you.
This was a playback of a multi-channel sequence on a W30. If you want a detailed demonstration of the seqencer search for Synthmania's video "Roland W-30 sampling and sequencing".
Do you still have the MIDI files? If so, can you please upload them? Thank you!
Бля, чувак это просто шизуха!!!! Но, довольно круто! Риспект!)))
Один из любимых альбомов TheProdigy, спасибо, чувак!)
Очень круто!!!)))
cool
This is amazing. You’ve got everything sequenced from the w30? Are the drums playing from the w30 too? I’ve had trouble syncing mine with other hardware
Glad you enjoyed it despite the gloomy picture and sound quality. The drums are inside the AKAI triggered from the W30. I use a box called a Midi switcher to route gear to the W30. Liam used daisy chaining!
Very nice groove on the track, just like Prodigy :) It seams Liam was/is heavy into groove and swing but w30 doesnt have that function. So he might have used triplet record quantization or 16th quantization with offset which w30 has. Or maybe he played all the hihats and everything in by hand. What do u think, did u use any of those methods when recording tracks in? Thank you
Thank you 🫶 Each melodic part like bass and stuff are quantised in straight 16th notes. But the rhythm elements vary, some shuffled notes are free by hand. Also there is a DBX 266-gate on some loops to clean up a bit of the mess. I rehearse and record live, then quantize it or make hand by hand shuffles in the micro edit-page.
cool
This is awesome man, I have a similar set up, but I’m fairly new to this and still figuring lots of it out. Would you mind describing the signal flow you’ve got going? How is everything routed etc. I’d love to start focusing more on the tune itself, right now the technical is still heavy for me. Cheers!
Cheers mate! Most of the stuff routed directly to a 16-channel Mackie (Nord lead, Juno, 303, Prophecy) with added aux fx on some. The Akai though has one individual output connected to a flanger that goes straight into a gate, it chops some loops nicely and adds some spice in the mix ♨️
Cool man, thanks for the info on that! Are you using the W30 as the master sequencer for everything?
@@georgejanho30 In this setup it was the sequencer. Lately it has been master keyboard to Cubase.
Hardware forever <3

sick. what is that synth sound? what gear and signal chain. it sounds just like the album
Thank you, I was aiming for that sound, it's a Roland JD-990 connected to a Mackie 32/8 just like back in the day.
My fav album ever B) Now imagine if Liam would release it as the double CD album and include all of those tracks, which didn't made the album, like We Eat Rhythm, Scienide, Rhythm of Life, or unreleased Funky and Raw. Just imagine if the Narcotic Suite was released as the EP instead to let Liam include all of the tracks, that he planned, including the full One Love track B)
My fav prodigy track in general. Where did you found that exact Voodoo lead sound?
Indeed “Voodoo People” blew me off my chair when radio played it in 1994. It’s a Roland module, the JD-990. Some say Liam used the SH-101 synth, and maybe he did at least for that bending guitar effect 🎸

Online
Very cool. Is that one of Liam's original W30 keyboards? I know therre where a few of them out there that people had aquired through eBay?
Nah, but still in original condition, the display lights up brightly and all keys work great. I have in mind that Liam's W-30's were pretty smashed 🙂
👍
Can you do some line in recordings so we can get a proper listen to it? Sounds beyond good man! Is this just using the Akai ? I'm loving your vids so far dude, subbed
Great collection of gears out there! Hope you'll update wih the 30th anniversary mate!
Lyssnar på denna varje jul, har blivit en tradition:) Mormor och morfar älskar den och hälsar många stora kramar och pussar💋
God Jul till er allihopa 🎅🏻
Great track mate
I came across this video hoping to understand my mackie 16:8 version of the mixer :) I undertstand what you mean when you say you havent made room and mine is almost half the size. Nice track btw
Good luck with the 16:8, very useful equipment that are capable of adding nice warmth in the lower midrange. Thank you, here's the tune in 12-bit hq:) soundcloud.com/akarimusic/pathbr8ker
Thank you:)

I dont know how and why did you make this video, but it made my day; pardon, my week :D
Your priorities in life are perfect 👌
Ironically nothing of value came out of this studio. It was built after Fat Of The Land, and abandoned during Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. Liam wrote Trigger, Nuclear, Babys Got a Temper etc, here. After being disillusioned with the results, and realizing he was having writers block, he came to the conclusion that this countryside studio environment was not conducive to writing good material. He moved a bunch of gear to a studio in London, and thats where AONO was written, and he continued to write in various studios around London area for the remainder of the Prodigy
You're right sir, but I'm actually starting to appreciate BGAT more on older days than when it was released. And some gadgets from Earthbound was brought to the Dirtchamber aswell. Do you know if he is still located in Great Dunmow? (although the studio seems to be in Kings Cross)
@@stoffenl I recall he moved. He used to be next door neighbors to Kieth but I recall when Kieth died the article mentioned that Liam no longer lived next door to him
@@robmausser Yeah Keith lived in Brook Hill, North End about 5 miles from Merk's Hall/Great Dunmow. I think they were neighbours already back in 1996, at the place where Earthbound was located. Liam moved into that house in 1993, and moved out in 98. Somewhere around Braintree (one magazine even said Chelmsford) I'm still trying to catch the name of the street. Totally missed the chance when the Earthbound-house (with the Indiana Jones hallway) was out on a real estate agent site back in 2008.
@@stoffenl I think One Man Army was the only track recorded in the Dirtchamber.
@@shadowrage2593 The Spawn OST tune? Nah he still used good old Earthbound in Braintree in 1997. I believe he bought Merks Hall (this studio location) in 1998.

How did you fucking do that... Wow.. That is just... Fucking no way. How did you get them photos! The fucking studio! Man!! OMG... Much Respect. Had to wait 18 years to see it. I mean these snap photos on back cover of Dirtchamber, you had to guess... It was all mistery. Plus Liam insisted on secrecy, always... Trying to keep the studio hidden out of public eye... This is so rare and unexpected... Feeling like a tomb raider. Fucking lol man, better delete it soon. Just kidding, this is so mindblowing. Thanks man. Whow ...
