In 1978 my Parents purchased a block of land at a lesser-known location called 5 Rocks. Today, it is a popular spot for those who love 4WDing and camping, but back then it was an undiscovered gem that at times we had to ourselves. It was here that my passion for 4WDing and exploring amazing camping destinations began.
Over the years, I have built many 4WDs and travelled to some of the most breathtaking camping destinations in Australia, I have experienced the thrill of off-roading and the serenity of sleeping under the stars. It's a passion that I truly love and has given me memories that will last a lifetime.
This channel is about building my dream 4wds and traveling to some of Australia’s most stunning destinations. Sharing my experiences, opinions and honest reviews along the way

GVM - WE GET BAD NEWS.
We weigh our GVM before we fit out our canopy, and come a lot closer to our maximum GVM rating than we were expecting, not leaving us a lot of weight to finish our build.
But Jason from weigh safe gives us some great advice to help with planning our build.

And after shorting them you’ve got them sat on the battery next to the positive terminal and the battery clamp.
Once you put a fridge, 12v battery, spare tyre and tent. Your passengers will need to bus it to camp.
I can’t believe you are planning to spend anymore money on that thing… not a chance of staying under legal GVM after you want to put everything in/on it, plus potentially towing… no point jamming a square peg in a round hole, just because thats all you’ve got. Do your research better and purchase a more suited and capable vehicle, then spend your money on that…
Not too mention SAS converting a vehicle that is too heavy and packed out for proper offroad driving?… Sorry, but i shake me head when i see trucks like this on the road and trails. When you understand it, they look so obvious lol…
Looks like ol' boy caught a right hook on his cheek. Learn to hold your liquor more better or at least hang out with a better crowd of fellow drunks.
Hey mate, what size is the tray? 1650? And what size is the box? 1500?
Sorry for the late reply mate,.. 1650 tray and 1500 canopy
keep an eye on the piano hinge with dust & sand, my Bull one on the psgr side basically seized up overtime, also go easy with the door closing with just the one hinge, it takes all the strain from the two struts when closing.
Would be very interesting to see how your final set-up will look like 👍
The Colorado is finally back from the fabricators and the last of the gear to fit it out arrived today, so hopefully will get a video out over the holidays 😊
Memories 🥰
Love this!!! ❤❤❤
Omg this is so touching!!! I cannot wait to see you get the Old Blue truck and restore her!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Bliss!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻😎😎😎
It's hypocrisy that nearly every dual cab tray back is over weight but the scalies and nhvr harrass truck drivers every day of the week.
Yeah exactly right... i think a large percentage of touring vehicles and caravans would be over weight I think with its growing popularity its going to be something they crack down on though.
hey mate any updates on how to get the canopy off with the nuts
Im taking them out and getting canopy latches made up, its currently in the shop getting roof rack made and latches installed. had to remove boxes and mud guards to remove the bolts. I will be doing a video on it as soon as we get it back
Hey mate, what you do with the existing tub?
sold the rear set up, tub, canopy ect..
Having watched this again i reckon you are up to the challenge of ultra light packing and canopy deck out. Will watch with great interest as i reckon you can turn this into a positive 👍
Hopefully mate, the roof rack and canopy latches are getting built atm, so roof top tent and awning should be on soon, and i can finally start.😊
Did you research how much gvm upgrade you can do for the Colorado..
I never gave it a thought till after purchase unfortunately.. never towed anything heavy or had a proper touring set up before so never had to worry about it. But have since and with these older vehicles you can only go 10% increase in gvm.. doesnt matter what mods you do, thats max.
Love the music and 5 Rocks is always a god damned treat!!! 😉😉😉
Yeah, its a special place 😊
Hi mate I just watched your vid when you first purchased the Ute. Have you still got the canopy? If so I would be interested. Draws ect as well. On the GVM did you get an upgrade at all. If so from whom. I also have a RC colorado. I’m a little Older than you (70) and I like it’s rude and performance. Cheers.
Hi mate, sold tub, canopy, draws... havent gotten the GVM upgrade yet, waiting to see how heavy my fit out comes to, to see if i need to upgrade vehicles or not.. i hope not though i love the RC for its simplicity aswell. Can get a 10% gvm upgrade max on these older vehicles. Fingers crossed its enough. It is currently in the shop getting the roof rack and canopy latches made up. Project got a bit delayed, i done a week trip up to 5 Rocks
Mine is a manual and drives like a dream. 10% gvm sounds good. Do they also give a 10% GCM? I have not had a tune yet. These engines are good but an extra 80-100 NM would be nice. Thanks for the reply.
@@kenlillia cant upgrade CGM unfortunately... my tune has around 100nm extra, very happy with its performance and fuel econemy
Thanks for the information. Will watch keenly your travel with colorado.
Old mate needs to re do his calculations 50x0.6 =30. If he meant to say 50x 1.6 that’s 80kg.
Yeah, i did the diagram the way it was said, over sight in my editing... though they way it was said works and is a simple way for people to work out there weights
what is the name & brand of your truck scale?
Dini argeo, designed and made in italy
Maths 101: 50 * 1.12 = 56 🙃 Perhaps give the formula instead?
Yep.. oversight while i was editing the video, just done it the way he was explaining
Good review .. a few handy points I never considered thanks mate 👍
Thanks mate, im glad you got something from our video 😊👍
Im putting a 62 kg slide out kitchen. That is going above the axle with the fridge weighing in at 25 kg at the rear.
What slide oit kitchen are you using?
I got the TC 1 meter half canopy for my Navara. Paid way less than market value “new” but second hand on marketplace. Very happy with the build quality and design of it, especially for what I paid for it.
Marketplace is such a great place to find bargains, we have gotten a bit of gear off there.. we are very happy with ours😁 what do you have in yours?
I don’t have kids so I’ve been able to pull out my rear seat and put my fridge, battery and charging station there. This allows me to put my spare hard up against the front of my canopy. Another way to save weight is to put parabolic leaf springs in and you get the benefit of better handling also.
Great idea, balancing the weight out is so important. And having the fridge in the cab would be handy. I will look into the parabolic springs, thanks mate.😊
I’m getting a similar canopy from GTWORKS Seven Hills for my new Dmax for $12k, bargain!
12 grand is a great price, we were going to check them out but never got there, so many companies building them now.
It was a this point, he knew he had fucked up.
I still think the Collie will do what we want.. gvm upgrade to 3150, the lighter i can make it the better on fuel it will be and more capable offroad.
I weighed every thing including people for a remote trip in a close to stock Hilux with one jerrycan of diesel and 70 litres of water I had about 120 kg spare
What gvm were you working with?
@@lockedhubs4x4 Stock GVM 3050KG it has a payload of 1050KG I had used about 100 KG in a nudge bar some spot lights and a dual Battery and some better tyres. Two people with food and water for three weeks remote. Fridge and solar panels 50kg, awning 38kg ,ARB twin Swag tools and basic spares filters and belts 40KG it was scary how it soon added up
A real eye opener. Such a problem for dual cab owners. The rear axle I s way too close to the back of the cab. Even the weight guy's comment on the poor load reserve of the Landcruuser. 640kg. I got the feeling that this build is not going to work unless huge dollars are spent on weight upgrades. Good luck.
Your right about the design, there is plenty of room for the rear diff to move back. I am looking at gvm upgrade options atm, I believe i can go to 3150 which will give me a bit more breathing space
Ive seen heaps of canopies with the drawer system weighing more than the contents. Look for plastic shelving and baskets. I use a wardrobe shelving system from Bunnings for my tools and spares. strengthen the weak points with twitching wire.
Yeah i have seen some very heavy fit outs, we are going to have to be very concious with the weights of everything we put in it. Thanks for the tips, i will check them out.
I saw a TC-Box on a Ranger Wildtrak with the Sabre (gold) color coded doors to match and thought i have to get one and at 15K was good price for a premade box. But im in no hurry at the moment.
We are very happy with ours, look good and well made. 😊
Great info its definitely the elephant in the room also loving those Butcher birds
Yeah definitely is, i see a lot of fit out video's done with everything timber, must be very heavy... we get a lot of birds where we live, we recently moved to Hervey Bay, we love it here.
Love the simplified formula to determine axle load weight for loads outside of the wheelbase. Thanks for the content. Cheers
Thanks mate, im really glad you got something from our video
A great informative vid ,the guy weighting is 100% correct the axle placement on all utes in this class is too far forward. Load the canopy up hook on van = a bent chassis, we saw 2 utes with bent chassis on a recent trip W.A. Kimberlies and N.T. There is talk in QLD allowing a GCM up grade ,more pain to come I think if the weights aren't keep in check in the canopy and towball weight. Safe travels
Yeah, its a poor design, we are getting strengthening plates put on the chassis, seen a couple of bent ones aswell, it is going to be a challenge for us, but we can get a gvm upgrade which will help us out. I think a lot of vehicles are on or over there safe limits now, I hope they choose the vehicles able to upgrade gcm wisely.
@lockedhubs4x4 Hoping the chassis strengthing does the trick for you, most of the damaged utes I have seen have had airbags fitted with high pressures. I sold my Hilux because of the chassis concerns and purchased an LC200. No worries with 265kg TBW and a 2,460 atm offroad van in tow seems to work well for us. Safe travels. 👍
Suggest you line the draws with rubber sheet and maybe the canopy as well, would be nice to have the top of canopy hold down bolts flush with the floor
Thats a good idea with the rubber, i will see if i can find some thing stuff somewhere😊
Cheers mate! Love the spot you picked also, drive past the old Maryborough ship yards a fair bit for work 😂
Yeah, we were lucky to get in there to film, amazing building and history
The more I look at all the add ons that people are chucking on vehicles the more I think that something like an off road Pod style trailer is the way to go, albeit an expensive way to go imo. I have a 18 Pajero Sport that I use for camping but I don't have a fridge, dual battery system, drawers etc etc. I basically use an esky and Front Runner Wolf pack boxes that I put everything in. I do have a steel bull bar on it as well as a roof rack (not heavy) but no other real mods that add weight. I chucked it over the weighbridge where I worked a while back before a trip I was doing and it was only 100kg under max weight. Keeping these things under GVM really isn't that easy considering the amount of gear that most people seem to cart around with them these days.
Yeah exactly, especially with all the mod cons for camping these days, we can get around 200kg more with gvm upgrade which will help, but i need to do a bit more research with the sas conversion side of things. Wow... the Pajeto doesnt allow for a lot of weight obviously, i bet there are a lot getting around over weight, they are a popular 4x4. When we did SA we saw a lot of modern Pajero's used as tow vehicles.
@@lockedhubs4x4 The Pajero Sport can carry around 600 kg, from memory, before GVM is hit. This is pretty comparable to other vehicles I have seen. Mine is base spec so higher models may be a bit less. They have a pretty high tow limit but I'm guessing most that you see pulling decent sized vans will be very close to or over GCM. That would apply to plenty of rigs you see getting around imo.
Use rivnuts (that’s what we call them in uk) and it puts a rivet with a thread so you bolt into that for the lift off box
We call them rivnuts aswell, not recommended for strength reasons here with the conditions of our tracks, weight and corrugations. Was something i asked the fabricator who is doing our work. Thanks for the advise though mate, cool to here our video being watched over there 😊👍
Bloody awesome channel dude learn more in your few videos and I have watching some of the bigger channels well done dude hope you channel grows
Thanks mate, im really glad you got something from our channel, we are only new, but hoping to improve with every video😊
I had this problem with the same platform ('09 DMax). After a lot of time spent researching, and shifting what weight I could around the car, I managed to solve the issue. I sold it and bought a new car. The gen 1 Dmax (and Collie) just can't carry weight. There's no GVM upgrade kits for them. It is doable... if you're prepared to spend what the car is worth* getting it engineered yourself. Expect to pay for new suspension components, heavier rear diff/axle, new wheels/tyres, brake upgrade and potentially chassis bracing. I was also warned that the already average ride quality will be even worse. It is an expensive process and I couldn't get a solid answer on what the final GVM figure would be. (I'm remote though, so limited in engineering options... you may have better luck down your way) I could not justify paying an engineer to start the process without knowing where we would get to. If you choose to stick with the old girl, I wish you luck. I will be following with interest. But unless the car has some sentimental value I honestly can't imagine it being worth the cost. The money you will likely spend (especially if you're planning to SAS it) would get you in a newer platform that will take a GVM upgrade... and be a far better car all round. *Hyperbole...maybe... but a small fortune none the less.
I really love the old Collie, i prefer my 4wds to be simple, which is why my last 3 have been GQ's... im personally not too fussed on all the modern bells and whistles... Im pretty confident i can make a cool rig out of it if i plan it out well... but i guess we will see in time.
Very nicely presented video mate, no. 126, keep it up!
Thank you mate, and thanks so much for watching and subscribing to be a part of our channel 💯 😊 its been a lot to learn, and still have so much more to learn... but i am really enjoying the journey. If only my pesky job would stop interfering with the things i love to do.... lol Hope to hear from you on the next video 👍
So you could have 2 upright fridges and 2 lithium batteries and still be 42kg lighter than 1 fridge a slide and 1 AGM 😅
Its amazing the difference you can make to your set up when you start looking at weights 👍
Yet to see a bd review on the TC canopies based on their price point. Looking to buy a canopy within the next few weeks and still shopping around to narrow down the options. Appreciate your time and content. Cheers. ps: if you haven't yet filled the holes from the TC badge, you might want to consider aluminium brazing to fill them. Cheap and easy to do considering the small diametre needing to be filled
We couldn't be happier with the build quality for the price. Thanks for the advice with the holes, i will definitely keep that in mind 👍
I commented on your last vid about weight I knew you would struggle ..Pull your towbar off if you don't tow and build your own draws out of ply with plastic sliders not draw runners .Use plastic tubs to keep it as light as possible ...Good luck
Thanks mate, thank you for watching again😁👍 thats a good idea, we wont be towing for a while, i will be looking at GVM upgrade options this week, hopefully i can get a bit more out of it. But if not, there are plenty of advantages to keeping it light. Either way we will make it work, and it will be a upgrade to the swag and gazebo set up ive been running for years out the back of the Patrol 😊😎
@@lockedhubs4x4 Buddy I know your pain ..I have my touring car on my channel as light as I can really get it without sacrificing to much
nice canopy mate, i went an explorer canopy and tray for 8.8k installed, good old edi downer behind ya must live in maryborough
How do you find there canopy? There were a few people coming and going on the day, a great guy by the name of Doc was the one kind enough to let us film there. He was a real caracter and gentleman, though i think a few of the stories he was telling us may have been slightly stretched 😁
Hey mate! Loved this video, TC boxes is great bang for buck I’ve had my TC boxes tray and canopy for 3 years now and I’m really rough with it lol. It’s seen a lot of mud puddles, dusty roads, rivers and even scrapped a few trees. It’s held up really well. I had whale tale locks fail. TC sent our replacements for free. The back drawer, gets a little dust in it but I left it unsealed. I also had the Jack off but my ford Ranger and tray (1800) have the bolts accessible. I built a false floor and just cut outs to access the bolts still. Overall, not much has failed. I also used insulation foam on the inside which reduced the temperature inside the canopy by 10 degrees
Thanks mate, we havent gotten to test ours on the tracks yet, but very impressed with it. We did a video getting our ute weighed, we will be looking into a GVM upgrade for ours now. cant wait to get it all fitted out and on the tracks 😎
Great info. Not mentioned, GVM also includes driver, passengers and luggage etc. So you probably have little left over for mods.
Yeah exactly, a lot edited out of this shoot, there was a whole lot of information and wanted to keep it short and simple. But should have had that in there. definitely be looking at a GVM upgrade. Otherwise we will be looking at a very simple fit out.
I think you said it's a 2009 model car? I have a 2010 ranger, and I couldn't find anyone to do a gvm upgrade, I think you might find it very difficult to go down that path. Only because the age of the vehicle, good luck, if you win, let me know, I'll try my luck aswell
@@antem77 yeah its a 2009, I have heard that people have gotten GVM upgrades for them, but dont get a lot of extra weight like more modern vehicles. Ill be doing the ring around during the week, hopefully we can find someone
@@lockedhubs4x4 it sux, I love my car, it's got plenty of life left in it, I just left ig a bit too late, I'll have to with it for a few more years, then when I build my new rig i will know exactly how to do it, step by step. We learn the hard way sometimes, but what can you do 😉
Maths on the 50kg fridge moved back 600mm - 50 x .6 = 30 ?
Been waiting on mine since june but booked in next month, i went with the 1metre trundle drawer and an 80litre water tank behind it . Also getting the spare wheel to the right side and a ladder in the middle for rtt. Look forward to seeing some vids on the build🤙
We are wrapped with ours, other than the few little issues, we are going to get latches that go into the jack leg holes. Got it weighed this week, bit shocked how little we have left with weight. Have to adjust the way we are going to fit it out, but hoping to still get everything in there that we want. It took a while to get ours, but its worth the weight. How are you fitting yours out?
Crazy heat sink design but its thinking out of the box. From a retired sparky, you learn quickly on what to be careful with next time. Haha⚡️ Good of you to post your mistakes so others can learn.👍🤠🍻🇦🇺
Hi mate, yeah i definitely learnt my lesson.... lol silly mistake to make, but these things happen unfortunately. Hopefully it can help some one, its easy enough to get distracted and over look simple things like this. 👍
it is a nice build BUT, you are putting the spare wheel and 2 x 20 ltr fuel or water tanks on the rear, plus the rear underneath, so this isn't built for towing a van obviously.
No, we won't be towing a van, just the roof top tent and possibly a camper trailer for the boys on bigger trips. Its also why i got the shorter canopy so it wasn't hanging that weight even further back. Then when i get the bar work done i will be getting the chassis strengthened at the same time, the pre-fab plates are cheap insurance not to turn it into a banana. I seen someone else was a victim to this on Fraser recently😔 Our next video i will be getting it weighed so i know exactly what weight i have to play with when im fitting it out. It all ads up quickly.
You will be massively over weight..
