Tying The Whistling Dun
I wasn’t able to find a huge amount of information on this pattern beyond what is listed in Mike Harding’s pattern reference book; if anyone knows more on the history or background for this fly I’d love to hear it!
Whilst this doesn’t actually whistle like it’s whistling (golden!) plover namesake, it’s a very attractive spider pattern nonetheless! Do give it a go if you’ve got some golden plover hackles and you’re fed up of tying “Hare’s Lug And Plover”-s.

Where have I been the last few weeks? Here’s some gratuitous cat videos to make up for it…! Don’t worry, returning to normal running soon.
Tying The Wiggle Damsel
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
A fun John Goddard damsel nymph pattern, this uses a sacrificial hook to create a jointed body that dances and shimmies through the water - just like the swimming action of the naturals! Alternatively, a 20mm shank for jointed streamers would do excellently for this technique too.
Tying The Pretender

A lovely early season pattern from George Barron, this uses reds, yellows, and blacks to beautiful effect.
Tying The Old Master
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
Yet another classic spider, Pritt’s 1885 ‘The Old Master’ is a great all purpose summer pattern. Although the original recipe calls for heron herl on the body, this can be easily substituted with grey goose fibres.
Tying The Fifty Degrees
Переглядів 5653 роки тому
A beautiful Jim Deren pattern, the Fifty Degrees is a classically styled American dry fly pattern that suggests a number of light coloured insects. Jim Deren owned the Anglers Roost, a fly shop in the Chrysler Building in New York City, and developed a number of patterns still in use today.
Tying The Oak Fly
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
Another classic North Country pattern, this fly has been around for a while; certainly it was already well known when Turton wrote his “Anglers Manual”. Nicely segmented with horse hair and with a little dubbed thorax, this fly can be taken for any number of small midge-y things!
Tying The Adams Irrestible

A small variant of the wonderfully chunky irresistible, using barred woodchuck guard hairs for the tail. I think tying all those Ausable Wulffs has rubbed off on me…!
Tying Spiders - Three "A and B" Patterns
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
Here I tie three classic north country spider patterns - the Snipe and Purple, the Partridge and Orange, and the Woodcock and Red - hence the “A and B” moniker! These are the simplest of the spider patterns (we will get to here heads, wings, and the like soon, don't worry!). But whilst these may be very minimalist flies, they can be technically challenging to tie; with such very fine and fragil...
Tying Fran Betters’ ‘Usual’
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
Rabbit’s foot - lucky for some, clearly not for the particular rabbit though! This pattern uses the wiry and water repellent fur from the bottom of a rabbit foot for this one-material dry, giving a bugginess and texture that can represent any number of insects. Simple tying at its best, as was Fran’s ethos.
Tying The Tup’s Indispensable
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
Using Vicuña Dubbing’s excellent Tups substitute, we can avoid the need to go anywhere near the urine stained testicle fur of a breeding ram - the secret ingredient, alongside the brushings of a lemon yellow spaniel and some red mohair - to tie this classic chalkstream dry!
Tying A Paraloop Midge Emerger
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
Paraloop hackles make for great emergers; the body and thorax are suspended just subsurface, with a big mass of hackle fibres dragging down a meniscus of water and imitating the jumbled mess of an emerging insect.
Tying The Green Mayfly #1
Переглядів 9213 роки тому
A stunning Donald McClearn loch pattern, this fly uses warm olive French Partridge, chocolatey-brown pheasant, and creamy seals fur and badger hackle to make a fly even I feel I would like to eat! Donald is probably best known for devising and codifying the Dabbler family of loch flies, but this is a cracking pattern of his too. Green Mayfly #2 swaps grizzly for the badger and the tying of this...
Tying A Super Simple Hendrickson Nymph
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
No legs, no hackle, and technically the rib and thorax cover could be done away with too; this is all about the different dubbings to create contrast between abdomen and thorax. Creamy felted red fox for the abdomen, scruffy teased seals fur for the thorax. A simple but effective fly, and you can really churn these out at the vice.
Tying The Ausable Wulff - with an original Fran Betters fly
Переглядів 1,8 тис.3 роки тому
Skip to 1:45 if you’re just here for the tying! The Ausable Wulff; one of the many patterns developed by Mr. Francis Betters, a fisherman of renown in the Adirondacks, and who knew the West Branch of the Ausable like the back of his hand. One of my favourite patterns of all time, in no small part due to the impact it’s creator had on me during a serendipitous visit to his shop. In the summer of...
