    Driving through the desert outside of San Diego, my mother harvested chaparral “la gobernadora” and used it for many medicinal purposes. This was nostalgic…smelling the fragrant chaparral after a desert rain.

    I disagree with him saying that chaparral takes 30 years to recover,the brush around my home was burned 10 years ago and now it’s 25 foot tall…..

      Not knowing where you live and what kind of plant community is actually growing around your home, it is not possible to know much about your particular situation. That said, if the conditions are perfect and the chaparral is in a relatively wetter environment on a north facing slope, it might reach 12 to 15 feet tall, and only then with particular tree-like species. You are probably looking at a recovering oak woodland.

    Doesn’t sound honest. That’s not what long time fire managers decided. No land management agency could afford with personnel, equipment and resources. Fire management efforts are very limited and managed by professionals who like you claim love our environment. That’s why we chose the profession. You might have ostracized yourself from that community. You sound great though. Much great information but not entirely yet. Keep on exploring.

    Great video. So much value in our Chaparral community. It’s management by first people’s a great lesson for our future, burning for resource values. Our wild land fire community taught ages old fire management practices from our first peoples and Spanish accounts. Sensitive wild land plant communities, 19:17 building practices on private lands that incorporate Firesafe/Firewise principles. A willingness to reduce fuel hazards to communities which includes non-native introduced plant 1769 ACE forward to 19:17 native interval burning for example in diegan coastal sage scrub for basketry for example. Studies needed include at what age should Chaparral be burned for increased water development in Chaparral communities adjacent to water sources for our greater communities. What value does old age chaparral have vs. younger chaparral reference species diversity. Wild land fire science has yet to catch up with the Wildland Firefighter. T. Porter, Calfire Fire Chief (Ret.), It’s the fuels. Bob Eisele Fire Behavior Analyst (Ret.) , as one who manages Preserved lands in my career and private life I find removal of dead fuels through removal and trimming leads to vigorous growth and reduced fire effects of our beautiful chaparral and oak community.

      @jack4theplanet 6 місяців тому

      I’m not vegan, but I am vegetarian. I encourage people to reduce their personal footprint where they can (like by eating less meat) because it does have an impact, but I also encourage people to advocate for system changes, because that has a much larger impact. It’s often framed as an either-or issue, when it can be both.

    • @veganradiation

    I disagree when you said chaparall does not need fire but it adapted to it If there are no more fires, the manzanita seeds will not germinate naturally. they will go extinct. they need fire to reproduce

    • @jack4theplanet
      @jack4theplanet 6 місяців тому

      Fires are a natural part of the ecosystem, and I agree with you that chaparral benefits from fires happening at natural intervals. Unfortunately, because of climate change and poor fire management, these fires are not happening at natural intervals anymore. There’s no need for us to do controlled burns at unnaturally short intervals for the sake of ecosystem health or fire management because at these unnaturally short intervals fires do more harm than good.

I live in Israel with a similar climates and relatively similar vegetation of chaparral, and people either calling it a desert or calling it forest 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ and usually don’t care about it. Sounds like you have your priorities right. Do well in school. Allow me to give some advice, from someone who has done it all. Conventional education is important, but life experiences count for far more. We are going into a period of time when actions will count for more than words. Learn real skills, with practical application, like carpentry and engineering. I have an MS in Biology, I've done a lot of field work. But that work-for-hire is far less significant to me now than simply knowing how the natural and artificial worlds really work. While in school, I learned biological system theory and ecosystem analysis, rare at the time. While doing that, I picked up huge and marketable computer skills, at a time when coding was exploding in importance, and made a career later as a software engineer. I learned carpentry and home construction in my spare time, including electrical and plumbing. These are by far my most important skills today, this outcome was completely unexpected. Expect the unexpected, for that will shortly come to dominate the human experience. We are in a terrible place. Seriously, whatever anyone tells you about the risks, they cannot say enough. The situation cannot continue, nor will it. Things will break. Nothing you and I know today, or take as permanent and sacred, will endure past a few more years. So learn everything you can about resilience, change management, communications, and Medieval history. I'm serious about that latter. Take a summer internship on a working farm, if you can. Learn about animals, domestic and otherwise. Install solar panels. Learn to work metal, including how to weld. Learn to work with wood, then craft a wooden wheel. Indeed, I have made many. There is so much to learn, and the time is short, but everything you master in the coming years will give you confidence as the current civilization unwinds, as it must. We are going back now. It will be scary and exciting, but we are going there whether we like it or not. I've enjoyed your content. Especially given how young you are. You remind me of my son, who is maybe five years older than you. Looking forward to hearing about your next adventure. You have no obligation to come back here and inform us what you are doing. You have every obligation to expose yourself to as many new things as you can, and to do as well as you can at all you do. Meet new people. Trust, but don't become vulnerable. Take pleasure in the moments. Make important memories. Embrace the unknown, for you and I are going there. Stay fearless. Good luck. -- Cougar.

    Climate change climate change climate change. Where were you in 1990 when Las Vegas didn't have anything but the strip and desert hills? Since then, I have seen this town grow so fast with so many building projects, hotels, and lavish golf courses. Not to mention the man made lakes for ducks at newly developed neighborhoods. Google map Las Vegas and you will see plenty of swimming pools in the backyards of the affluent. Rules for you but not for me. The water consumption had gone mad here. But let's blame climate change not man's thirst for property values and tax revenue.

    You are wrong about stopping fossil fuels stopping climate change. We are already in a feedback loop that could take hundreds of years to slow down. 90% of the excess heat is in the oceans. We are suffering now from what we did 30 years ago. Might be time to start becoming a doomer. In any event, our race is only going to continue to increase the contamination. we are decades from any type of international cooperation.

    And for those of you who think this isn’t climate change because it snowed a lot, it’s climate change. All of the science points to an increased severity of storms being a symptom of climate change. And remember, this is a global phenomenon. It was a harsher winter than usual in the Western US, but a very mild winter in the Northeastern US, and the second-mildest winter on record in Europe.
