Emotions of drawn lines
I talk about the emotions drawn lines carry once placed on a page. People usually talk about shape language. But I believe this starts with the atoms aka lines as they make up shapes.

    this is exactly the video I was hoping to find! I've just picked up drawing again after many failed attempts to stick to it. this is the first time I've started to actually take into consideration what I'm doing, my motions and speed, and being more thoughtful about the stroke I'm about to make (even if it's just practicing lines). I very much appreciate your realistic view of how hard it is to become good at drawing. I can't expect to become good without putting in the hours. making a routine and sticking to it like you recommended is an important step I need to take if I truly do want to improve. I personally don't feel you sounded like a know-it-all at any point during the video. you've practiced and trained yourself for years, you made this video with the sole intent to help people like me! this video alleviated some of my fears and gave me some more confidence to do this for real. Using Drawesome and the practice sheets will become part of my daily routine if i can help it! In short, thanks dude :)

      I feel like I should mention one last point about drawing lines. At the start of the day when I wake up, I am commonly rusty. You could say it is atrophy from not drawing all the time. The purpose of a daily drawing warmup helps get you in the drawing flow mode. Executing lines at the start of the day will be a bit choppy. This gets better after years of practice. Just make sure you don’t cause a stress on your shoulder, arm, and wrist. I have done this. Basically you can put in time but you need to take breaks or you can cause a stress fracture. I was inspired to make this video coming from drawabox in which they showed some drawings on how to execute lines. But I thought I would touch upon it again. Digital nibs glide easier than say pencil lead. Different tools will feel different. Paper matters as well. Rough paper you will feel resistance compared to say strathmore series 300 smooth paper.

      @@larsbarnabee Thank you for the tips! I actually have just started drawabox (again). The first exercise led me to searching "how fast should you draw lines" on google. This video was the first result under the videos tab so i clicked it. Watching it made me realize I should spend more time researching questions I have about drawing and the course, so I checked out your website, your software, your tip jar, etc. I then watched reviews of drawabox on youtube to see and they all mentioned that they too, like me, had started drawabox once or even multiple times in the past and had dropped it for one reason or another. However, they all said what helped them to stick with it was coming in with a new mindset. reading and watching the materials in full, the 50/50 rule, and making it part of a daily routine are things I didn't put in to practice 5 or 6 years ago when I first attempted it. I'm happy to say I have spent some time dialing in my tools, desk space, and chair in order to reduce fatigue and make strokes more consistent and accurate. I'm sticking with the printer paper and fine tip pens drawabox recommended for the course, but in my 50% time I do draw in both a sketchbook and with a drawing tablet. Thank you again for this video! it's been a catalyst of sorts

      Haha! No problem! A good math education is hard to get. When I was younger I struggled greatly until I took many math classes on university. 2d and 3d forms can be a lot to take in. I hope to make videos on ellipsoids and other weird forms. Regarding my videos being unknown. Some people said they couldn’t find my videos, so I created an all videos playlist. Also when I started, I was doing a lot of app development so I didn’t post videos for a few months or so. That may have hurt my channel a bit.

      This is funny that you bring that up. My personal work is a bit more rough. I draw any art traditionally that I save. I will have to make a UA-cam video about it. I would put it on my blog, but my laptop is out of service at the moment. Rip my website until I can get my computer fixed. My more finished work will likely be in black India ink. These days though I have been focusing all on my rendering skills as they are lacking. I worry about trying to add polish on things that I still need to work my skill up on. I do not have a portfolio in the traditional sense. Like the resume kind. I may make one someday. Apologies for this type of answer. I have been plagued by some bad luck. My personal computer needs fixed and I inherited a lot of work at my day job from layoffs. In the near future I want to record myself drawing traditionally. Please stay posted. I have the vision but it takes so long just to see my vision in action. Lot to be said about working with a team. I think i am more of a programmer and music person. Art more physical, I like pixel art but I think I choose a way too high resolution. This ends up taking me a lot more time considering I add subtle animations. Maybe should have stuck to 16x16 as when I start I make drawings then struggle to translate. I think a good reason exists as to why some people stick to their one domain. @thatdude8022 6 місяців тому

      If you are truly that consistent, you can improve a LOT! However, drawing 5-6 hours a day is very tiring, and you will burn yourself out quickly doing that. But you could get decent pretty quickly if you practice often, but we all move at different paces, so don't be disappointed if you aren't where you want to be in a year.

      I am going to be brutally honest. It depends how much experience you already have. First off you can always achieve it. It is a bit of a marathon and not a race. I say go for it. But don’t burn yourself out. I believe people talk about 1-2 hours a day being a healthy amount. But if you are addicted to it, by all means do more. It also depends on what level of character design you want. Personally I don’t think I could work 5-6 hours a day. I think 2-3 is a bit more reasonable. But I also have an unrelated full time job. But burnout could loom. Also character design can go deep. Depending on the level. I would seek other resources for learning character design. Perhaps Brooke Eggleston character design forge on UA-cam. Or other books. Seek out your favorite character designer to learn from.

But sadly you can’t pause gif images without opening them in a program. It was briefly mentioned in the first lesson i believe. But I heard Uncomfortable changed some lesson material. So perhaps it is gone. I guess the only other tip I could give is if you want to figure out how to rotate anything in 3D space, keep in mind a rotating box. But study the thing you want to be able to rotate from as many angles as possible to learn. Hope this helps!

    OH LARS! I went through DAB shortly after/ about the same time as you (I started later and caught up at lesson 6 or 7) and I remember looking at your homework and feedback and learning from it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the experience. Your treasure chest submission in particular was one I looked at a lot, because there are so few student submissions for it. I agree so much that taking the time to critique other students helps you AND the student, it works well. You're not the only one to go through revision hell in lesson 5, it is a toughie. For ellipse guides instead of a full set there are "master" ellipse guides which have a bunch of different degrees on a single sheet, they're cheap, but tiny. I understand the frustration of not having the ellipse you want, I remember the pain. Interesting that you fount the wheel challenge painful, for me it was easier than lesson 6. For lesson 7 I did a bicycle and a wheelbarrow to get away from doing a ton of wheels. And a blimp hahaha. HUGE congrats to you for finishing everything, it sounds like you had a rougher time than I did and I have SO much respect for your tenacity. Yeah, Uncomfortable is overhauling the lesson content, and recently updated the box challenge.

      No problem. Quite possibly I suffered a bit more at the time due to time constraints. Drawing is one of those life long habits that gets easier the more you do it everyday. To be honest, I learned to ghost ellipses more on my own so I don't have to use the ellipse template. Possibly I should have bought a master ellipse set because I ended up buying a bunch of sets instead that never really had the right ellipse I needed. Wish I could have used digital because Lazy Nezumi works for technical, but free handing is what I enjoy more. The rougher time could have been from many factors as I had to balance a job with a lot of over time during the early 2020's. Thanks! I still draw everyday. Although due to time constraints I don't have enough time to make as much tutorials as I want to. Uncomfortable tends to do that a lot. It makes sense an iterative approach. I believe he has done that about two times already. He had to take burnout breaks as well. Which makes sense. I just hope he draws these days still. When I was giving a lot of critique, I got a bit burned out. I will have to check on the updated content Uncomfortable made. So I can keep up to date with practice. But I never stopped drawing boxes from time to time. It ended up kind of spilling into my other work. Haha. I tried to cover topics I learned from dab but possibly some of my stuff will be outdated based on his newer exercises. All in all, I think being able to freehand what I want was the greatest thing I developed overtime from dab. After completing it, I was a bit lost for an hour on what to do next. But I just kept practicing and drawing what I wanted to along the way. That appears to have worked for me.

      Thanks! If you are looking for more information regarding this, possibly hatching method in shade and shadow. Basically you use lines close together to draw shade or shadow. Although not every line maybe identical. Many will be, but they have to follow the same flow. Identical lines get easier with a ton of muscle memory. Like years and not days. So it can be a bit difficult to achieve. But possible. Mirroring lines is another topic. I will have to make a video on that.

    This always happen to me. How often do you use horizon and vanishing points. For instance do you freehand and reverse engineer with the help of two point perspective.

    • @larsbarnabee
      @larsbarnabee Рік тому

      It depends. Do you have an idea for something you want to draw? I can make an example video for you? Often I draw from a reference image. So you don’t always see the vanishing points and you may need to guesstimate a bit. Personally I have drawn a lot of boxes in 3 point perspective. That can help you orient objects. If you can fit it in a box, you can orient the thing you want to draw using proper vanishing points. I feel like it is more about the illusion and making a convincing rendering. If you ever deal with organic things, it helps to understand gesture drawing. I plan to make a massive series of these. It is more about the feeling. I think doing a lot of gesture drawing meaningful practice to the point that you can do it automatically is key. Although I am not a pro yet, I think I can make something to help others

    • @larsbarnabee
      @larsbarnabee Рік тому

      Yes! That is exactly it! That is just due to perspective and the box actually being closer to you! The viewer based on perspective. I guess you could call it perspective distortion. In reality. The box is the same. Just like a person is larger up front and smaller farther away. This varies a lot with the viewing angle, just to keep in mind. Glad to help!

  • @guitarsandsuchetc
    @guitarsandsuchetc Рік тому

    How do you determine the correct dimension of the box such as width and length. More so width. Is there a formula or process you can use with vanishing points with a straight edge. I want to make a frame as accurate as possible.

    • @larsbarnabee
      @larsbarnabee Рік тому

      So in the video I winged it. But if you like draw a circle to encapsulate the rotation of the box, it could help. So you would try to encapsulate the top and bottom of the box into a rotation. Like a cylinder form.

    • @guitarsandsuchetc
      @guitarsandsuchetc Рік тому

      @@larsbarnabeeThanks for writing back. I guess this a very tricky procedure because the information thus far from research on the internet is very hard to understand other than maybe that plainly simple rotate cube channel where he depicts those ellipse method. but I am having of a hard time trying to properly describe to anyone that I am trying to draw a sequence or animate a cube of front view turning horizontally on its center. Its very difficult to describe it, like a box positioned center on a lazy Susan spinning.

    • @larsbarnabee
      @larsbarnabee Рік тому

      No problem! You have the right idea with the lazy susan. Basically it is just a cylinder that would encapsulate the box perfectly. Have you tried drawing a perfect circle centered on the axis of rotation on the top of the cylinder and the bottom of the cylinder? If you are attempting to get it perfect, possibly using some type of cad software then using that as a drawing reference from that can help. Although I mostly focus on logical free handing. Focusing on this like for near 100% accuracy is best left to a cad program. Some cad programs allow one to do animations like you are describing. And focus on the axis of rotation. I can see how it is difficult to visualize. I should make a video on that….

    • @guitarsandsuchetc
      @guitarsandsuchetc Рік тому

      @@larsbarnabee I am a bit confused about a perfect circle since the cube is face straight on. But I tried very narrow ellipse for top and bottom. trying to get the hang of it being its alot of thinking and gets messy. I had a feeling that maybe to be as accurate as possible would require a computer program. Just seeing if those exercise that those artists provide on those sites suggest that the process is meant to be free hand or if there is even a more technical approach to facilitate near perfection or at least realism. anyway thank you again for your time.

    • @larsbarnabee
      @larsbarnabee Рік тому

      Oh, so think of the cylinder that encapsulates the box. The top of the cylinder has a perfect circle and the bottom of the cylinder has a perfect circle. Now the top circle depending on your perspective is a bit distorted. If the box sits centered on the vanishing point, then you wouldn’t be able to see the top plane of the box or the bottom plane of the box. So the cylinder that encapsulates the box you would not be able to see the top of the cylinder nor the bottom of the cylinder. Just like a box still has 6 sides, a cylinder has two circles. Even though you can’t see them based on the perspective. Make sense? If you email me, I could draw a few pictures to describe it better. As it is a bit difficult with words. To be honest, it is better shown with drawings.
