Anyone who thinks Jani was better than Elias is probably conflating Jani's skills (which are considerable) with the speedier, catchier compositions of earlier Sonata songs. Both are great guitarists, but I respect Elias much more because (1) he made a name for himself as a solo artist before joining the band and (2) he's evidently a much easier person to get along with than Jani was.
+Jonathan Duckworth There is a reason why he was chosen with little delay from Toni at the time.
Jani is the more gifted virtuoso of the two and his guitar sounds better. You can tell if you compare their live performances on the same songs. Jani's playing is more fluid, faster, and feels more effortless. Not to mention Jani just sounds more like SA because he is SA. Elias is great from a technical standpoint, but he's a bit more rough, not as fluid at high speed, and his guitar doesn't sound as good.
Jani is better. ^^

Is it just me or does Elias look hilarious in that picture? Leather pants, a loose sparkly transparent button-up, those sunglasses, the face he's making, then the shiny guitar. I'm not one to make fun, and believe me I'm not. I'm a big fan, it just looks like he's trying really hard to be badass and it looks so freaking funny.

Elias Viljanen>Jani. Not hating, I'm a huge fan of Jani's work but Elias is simply better. Better range, more distinct sound, better musician IMO. Now that being said Elias has never written something like My Selene :P

To all of you saying Jani is so much better than Elias... well I'm a huge Sonata and Jani fan but did jani release a solo CD? plus Elias has different styles in his songs while still having his own signature in it so in my opinion he's an awesome guitarist. and no I'm not trying to say who is better I just want you ppl to stop trashing other artist!

Es tecnico y buen guitarrista pero le falta ese algo a la hora de componer , es poco creativo. En cuanto a creatividad musical me parece mucho mejor Jani , ambos son muy tecnicos Jani mas autodidacta que Elias, pero con mas espiritu.
i've only gotten to know Sonata Arctica within the last year, so i never really got a feeling for Jani's style. Although Jani's solos on Winterheart's Guild are amazing, i prefer Elias because of what he's done as a solo artist and the fact that i never really got to know Jani's style like i have with him
