A melanoma in Ray's leg required lifesaving amputation⎜Conquering Skin Cancer
When we think of melanomas and skin cancers, we have been told to look for any moles that are a bit odd, or changing over time. But a broader goal for us all is to just “know the skin you’re in”, because sometimes, skin cancers won’t even present as a visible mark on the skin.
Just as Ray, who would often joke around with his dermatologist about whether he had found anything before he started looking. But one particular day, Ray said yes- and presented a golf-ball sized lump on his leg, with no mark visible on his skin. His dermatologist’s shock quickly turned into action- and before Ray knew it, his only option to save his life was amputation.
Imagine feeling sick for two years straight, and then one day, you just wake up feeling younger and healthier than ever. As scary as amputation sounds, Ray reflected on feeling 21 again just two days after his leg was amputated- the melanoma had been affecting him for years.
His sense of humour could never be affected though. “If I’d had two legs, I would have jumped up and down!”
Your first line of defence is being familiar with your own skin. Prevention is key, but early detection is absolutely crucial in our mission to conquer skin cancer. Are you due for a skin check? Let this be your sign- and go and book one in!
See Ray in Conquering Skin Cancer, in cinemas near you. Don’t see your local cinema on the list? Shoot us an email at hello@conqueringcancercampaign.com and have a chat to us about how you can see it!

We completely agree- it is such a powerful story!
Thanks for sharing your story, I've had a few BCCs and I no longer bake myself on the beach and am a lot sun wise.
Thank you for your support Laura- we are thrilled to hear you are more sun safe now, but are so sorry to hear about your BCCs. We hope you had them removed smoothly and are recovering well 💛 Chandrika's story, and the voices of so many others in Conquering Skin Cancer, are striving for positive change in the skin cancer space- we hope you get a chance to see the film on the big screen!
@@ConqueringCancer Yes, put Aldara cream on them and have recovered, thank you. Hoping for no more in the future!
It's not being paranoid, it's being smart! So everyone get your skin checks!
We completely agree, Laura! Regular skin checks are absolutely essential 🙌

very helpful video ❤
Thanks for your efforts to raise awareness about sun safety. Reading your message really hits home, as my brother Dan also battled skin cancer. Five years after having a skin cancer removed, we were devastated to learn it had spread to his brain and lungs. Before his diagnosis, I never realized that skin cancer could travel through the bloodstream and cause such widespread damage. Dan underwent brain surgery and was placed on a clinical trial. While the new treatment caused the cancer on his skin to shrink and disappear, it was sadly too late for him. He lost his voice and, ultimately, his life to this disease. I share this to emphasize how crucial early detection, prevention, and research are. Skin cancer can be a horrible, avoidable death, and stories like Dan’s show why we must support advancements in treatment and educate others. Let’s all enjoy the sun safely and protect ourselves with shade, sunscreen, and regular skin checks. Thank you again for shining a light on this issue and helping create a safer, sun-smart future. 🌞
Thank you so much for sharing your story and Dan's- we are so sorry for your loss. The stories we hear when people have lost their lives to skin cancer are so powerful, and so devastating as it is such a preventable disease. We hope this film will educate and raise awareness for the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment- and ultimately save lives. Thank you for your support of the film 💛
I really want to see this as I've had skin cancer.... but not showing anywhere near me!

You are all TROOPERS 💃 who have fought the good fight keep on keeping on ....say no🙅🏾♀️ to cancer
We completely agree! An incredible group of people, all on a mission to prevent breast cancer 🩷
Well said Pratika sound just like when you were at Suva Grammar good luck.Love the dog!
You are brave to tell your story. I hope you are able to reach others.❤️ Cancer is still a killer and prevention is always the best solution. I too lost my husband to Cancer, my best friend to melanoma... Jesus protect us all. ❤
We are so sorry to hear about your husband and best friend, Trish- how awful. Prevention is absolutely the best solution, and it's why we are so passionate about spreading this message. Julie is an incredible advocate, we feel very privileged she chose to share her and Allan's story with us for Conquering Skin Cancer.
.😮😮
It's nothing to feel ashamed about.
Praying for your full recovery and healing!❤️🙏
No no! No shame! One common place to get melanoma is the soles of the feet! Who tans there? And, whoever made you feel you could have prevented this should be ashamed themselves.
Looking forward to the full stories of the brave women/ men respectively
Thank you for the opportunity to feature in this film and help those affected and afflicted by breast cancer.
Thank you for your endless inspiration and courage in sharing your powerful story! We are so privileged to have you in this film.
😮😮😢 ❤
We're looking forward to seeing this!
Thank god for BRAF inhibitors man. That pet scan is gnarly.
Bless you❤
Absolutely no need to feel any shame. YOU didn’t do this to yourself.. the sun did. We also didn’t have as high an SPF as we do today. Replace the shame with hope! Wishing you all the best! 🇨🇦
Dont be ashamed. Youre not a doctor. When I got grown and knew fair skin with freckles was never going to tan I started wearing a tshirt outside, even in the water. And sunscreen. I had cancer on my back and on my left arm removed twice. Keep checking. Have a family member take your phone and video your back each month. You can keep track of changes. Thats how I knew the mole my daughter found was actually cancer. My dermatologist was impressed and printed a pamphlet to hand out using my technique.
My best friend died at the age of twenty, I had turned twenty one and we were waiting to celebrate her twenty first birthday but she died three weeks before her birthday! When she was around five she got covered in moles all over her body, it wasn’t from sun damage! I miss her everyday she was the nice one, she was the kind one, she was thoughtful, and caring, she should have lived, I get so angry now because I have children and I understand that her parents would never get over their beautiful daughters death! ❤❤❤
For the longest time we didn't know this. We do our best going forward.
My mother’s grandmother passed away from skin cancer in the 1940s. My mother never saw her grandmothers face because due to feeling shame over how she looked, she lived behind a hanging curtain until she passed. Grateful it can be treated now.
Thank you for sharing your story Anne, my eldest daughter was diagnosed with melanoma almost 2 years ago. You give me hope.
We're so sorry to hear about your daughter, Joey- we hope she is receiving the care and treatment she requires. ❤️
@@ConqueringCancer yes, she is. Thank you
Hope you are all clear now ❤
Verigood
😊
Does being outside in the sun without sunscreen and clothing contribute to melanoma ?
Yes, 100%! Exposure to UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer, with up to 95% of melanomas and 99% of non-melanoma skin cancer caused by repeated and over exposure to UV rays (Source: SunSmart & Cancer Council). We know the dangers of the sun- but we also know how to protect ourselves. Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, & Slide! Hopefully 🙏 a miracle will happen for you and you will be cured take care. !! Xxx😊
My father has had 3 rounds of mohs surgery to remove skin cancer - all on different areas of his face. The last round they found it was starting to bond to his nerves and use them as corridors to move through his body….but we think they caught it early enough. I’m waiting to get in to the dermatologist for biopsies -- which terrifies me. Sending you love and light and hoping everything gets better and stays that way. 💜💜 thank you so much for sharing your story with us
Thank you for sharing your story too- we hope you and your father are both alright. ❤️
