Pretreating with DTG, How to measure your pretreat to achieve better DTG prints. DTG tips and tricks
Knowing how many grams you are spraying is very important with DTG printing. Not only does it give you insight on achieving the best print possible by able to dial in your settings. When you are in a jam you can ask questions and provide information to allow a tech or fellow DTG users to help you. Just saying you are having trouble pretreating a certain brand or color doesn't provide enough information to answer it correctly. See this simple quick video to show how to measure your grams you are spraying and get your DTG prints to the Pro Level.

Process does matter with DTG printing. Watch this video to see how the vibrancy is different between a heat press method and a Conveyor system method. Everyone's shop is setup different, so we can't always use the same settings as others to achieve the same print quality. In this video we are using Brother GTX Pro B CMYK - Firebird ink White- Firebird ink Pretreatment - Gen3 from Firebird Heat ...

The viper MAXX should be measured in a 14x14 square to get to your accurate grams ratio. This can be calculated by hand as well using a fence painter if that is how you still need to measure that way. It’s ok to name drop the most excellent machines you use my man……..
The reason why we use 14x16 is because we have so much data going back to when we had the Shulze and did a 16" length. Its easy for me to know quickly the amounts and adjustments. I will say that each of my machines has a different step number to achieve an even spray so I keep that in mind to confirm my spray area is what i want it to be. But you cant beat the open system and stack ability feature if you fast. Can we maybe get a drain hole lol
Great video!
Thank you!
G-Money the GOAT.
making me blush
tbh in my country u cant sell DTG Shirts with the "normal manual" Pretreatmarks anymore...
what do you mean by normal manual? our shirts especially when using our Ghost pretreat is retail ready with no markings or box.

Droppin another banger of a vid! Always a great watch. Spittin the facts!
Thanks Bisket! appreciate that. Keep on doing great artwork
How does Ghost pretreat compare to Image Armour Titanium?
I have not personal purchased Titanium to compare and test, only watched videos that they have posted. So at this moment I can't really say anything about it, I just know what our ghost can do, and you can see from our uncut video and print settings our vibrancy and print settings with the GTX. IF we do test we will let you know. Thanks for watching.
What brand of machine do you use for pretreatment? Thanks.
We currently use the ViperMaxxx, this is mainly because with the amount of work, using a dryer sprayer is to much stress on our shoulders so we want an open air system. We have had other Vipers, Shulze, Wagner, Polyprint, Pearl all to test.
What are your oven settings?
For the ink curing our settings are 340F for 3:20 seconds. This gets our ink to 330F for at least 30 seconds which is what I want.
Amazing channel I am the #51 Subscriber🎉🎉🎉. Can't wait to see more videos, amazing content
Thanks so much appreciate that!
Great Video Champ!
Appreciate it!
What’s the drying time and temp for the PT?
@@Styln with our chiossi we are at 250F for 1:30 but there is a lot of forced air, if your using a IR dryer like Vastex I’d recommend going higher. With our old Vastex 3d we were closer to 500-500f for 1:15 seconds 4 height. With IR dryers they vary so much I’d get a temp gun and see what the PT area is getting up to. I’d recommend above 300f.
@@Styln than for the Heat press I recommend no less than 300f, regular cotton shirts I’m 320-300, but blends and dyed I’m closer 300. The PT likes be to very dry. Pressure wise I’m normally 70psi(med-high) for blends 30-40psi. Unlike other PT it doesn’t need to be damp to lay flat. It’s very flexible with soft hand feel.
Would love to see a video on the Pre Treatment process.
Can you be more specific? this video shows us pretreating and printing with no cuts or edits.
@breakthroughclothing I've never understood what determines how much PT to apply to garments. I remember a tech explaining it's based on garment weight. But, is it really and if so, how do we figure it out? A video explaining this would be FANTASTIC to see. Thank you!
@@websurfer2344 its dependant on the color and weight of the tee as well. Each PT solution has a baseline starting point of grams, and then you can adjust from there to lock it in. You want to apply the least amount needed to get the most optimal white. Performing a step test will help you determine that if you want to get really exact.
Gerald, fantastic content! Thank you. I'm just wondering, what is your thought process when choosing how much in pre treat????? Would really appreciate your explanation.
It varies based on color and fabric material. Understanding what dyes have a bigger impact such as a red or pink dye can cause more dye migration than a yellow or blue. to be honest some of it is just experience over the last 15 years and seeing how different colors reacted with the same amount of pretreat.
Cool!🌟👌🏼👏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼
Thank you
hey, I really enjoyed the video, it's nice to see what the processes are like in other companies. Out of curiosity, what temperature must the ink reach in the dryer to polymerize well and have extreme resistance to washing? thank you so much 😄
With the inks we use we like to get to 330F for minimum 30 seconds for optimum washing. With that being said also understanding that if the image is 15CC of ink it will need more energy to reach those temperatures so we may need to increase our system to reach that, and the same for vice versa.
Awesome👍
Thanks 🤗
How about a gildan safety green work shirt 50-50 blend?
A Gildan is definitely harder to do as it is a looser weave and heavier shirt so more dyes on the shirt. Having the GTX in the shop its harder because we are not able to flash the white in between like Polaris or ROQ. But overall I wouldn't recommend the Gildan or the jerzees 50/50 just simply because of the dye migration as in screen printing your able to use a dye blocker but for DTG your not able to so I would stick with a slighter tighter weave shirt as for now until a Ghost version 2 even better with dye blocking.
Also can you provide the highlight and mask settings when you are printing a CMYK + WHITE on a white shirt?
My personal settings if there is visible white would be (2 or 3) highlight 1 mask with contrast upped to around 15 to help darken the colors since GTX graphics lab doesn't profile for white shirts.
Can you do a demo for customers who have a heat press only
Also do you you work with ASCOLOUR?
we will work on getting a video for that for you
Yes we have done AScolour in the past, we don't have a direct account so we don't always get them in. They work
Awesome!
Thank you
Been waiting for this one!
Glad we could help
How are the prints looking after washing. Is there much fading on the CVC tees?
No, I have shirts I wear for work that have over 15 washed and look completely passable. I will say that a lot with wash fastness will be because of the curing of the ink. Because ghost doesn’t drain you can not worry about curing your shirts at the correct time or temps. The red color did dye migrate, and neon yellow needed more ink because of dye migration
