Too Close For Comfort ~ Protecting The Cottage | Tree Danger

Hello Friends, We finally reached the day that we will have one of our trees taken down. We don't like cutting trees down, but the 3 trees that line the drive way have grown too big and this one is leaning directly over the cottage, the telephone lines and would block the road if it were to fall, so we have no option than to have it taken down. We would normally take trees down ourselves, if th...

It took ten minutes of shaking the milk (we did not separate the cream out) to get the butter we wanted. Nice memory.
Hi Neal, Indeed it can take a while if the cream content is low. It kept us amused for ages when we were kids. Thank you for sharing this. 😊
I'm going to a composting course in about 3 weeks as I just haven't got the hang of it. Sigh you are so organised =-) I'm battling weeds but am making progress as seedlings are going in. Now I've got to work out what got the ripe strawberries last night. Lol it is fun really and munching on broccoli as walking around the garden makes it worthwhile. Take care =-)
Hi Lorraine, have fun on your composting course, it maybe good to meet some other like minded people and talk compost. It can be trial and testing to see what works for you, that what I’ve done just over many, many years. It’s exciting to start planting up all those seedlings with hope of yummy harvests. 😊
Fresh farm milk on frosted flakes for breakfast is still a great memory from my childhood .
Hi Guycalgary7800, thank you for your comment, you just brought back a memory for me too, when we lived on a dairy farm when I was young and we would very occasionally get frosted flakes ( Frosties) 🙏
Hiya Menita, I had written you a long winded comment but it appears to have disappeared and I don't have the time to re-write. the clay water feeders arent something I've seen before but look very useful. great vlog x
@@livingjustright90 Hi Rae, aww I’m sorry your original message disappeared into the YT abyss! It’s good to hear from you anyway and I hope the garden wedding went well. The clay water feeders are handy especially when you don’t have an irrigation system. 🤗
Hiya Menita, it was interesting watching the arborist bringing down the tree. They made it look too easy. I think you may be shredding branches until next winter looking at the size of the pile. But I'd be relieved not to have a tree like that hanging over my house. X
@@livingjustright90 Hi Rae, it really was fascinating, I was very impressed by the boot spikes they use for climbing the tree. I don’t think I’ll be trying it any time soon though! It is a relief to get this tree down as it was the one over hanging a little too much. I think you might be right with the branch chipping, I might just decorate the pile for Christmas lol 🤗 xx
Yea yea all very pretty but see …… I do get have a coo , and we aren’t American so we don’t use cups . Nor do I have a fancy kitchen and making these while camping …. In Scotland ……., the wind ….. the gales ….. less romance more practicality please 🤨
@@janicegray511 Hi Janice, thank you for taking the time to comment, it’s a shame you don’t find this video as practical as you might like. Our kitchen is far from “fancy” but we like to make the most of what we have. I use many different ways to measure ingredients, and I find that this is a great recipe that can be prepared ahead of time before cooking outside by mixing all the dry ingredients for transportation and just adding the milk last which can be done whilst camping. We do have our share of wind and gales here in Scotland but we are also blessed with some beautiful weather too, which is when most people that enjoy camping in the great outdoors head out. Enjoy the rest of your day, take care. 😊
It is always something to be done around the garden and land, a never ending job. Not a chance to be bored😊 Thank you for sharing the videos to us, looking forward to the next one. Take care🤗
@@domnicadragan377 Absolutely, you are so right, we never get chance to be bored! 😂 Thank you for stopping by, I hope you are well. 😊
Firewood galore =-) and paths nicely covered. Win, win. And yes it is fun watching the guys cutting with such skill. Take care as always.
@@lorrainerichardson3280 Yes we will definitely be getting warm several times over by this wood , by the time we get it all cut up, stacked and chipped. 😂
Your poly tunnel is always looking nice. You are so well organised, so tidy and attentive to every detail. Fantastic place! Thank you for taking time to share with us! Looking forward to the next one.🤗❤
@@domnicadragan377 Hi Dominica, it’s lovey to hear from you and thank you for your beautiful words, that’s very kind of you 🙏
Your mystery plant possibly looks like butternut. The green bottles - do you fill them with water and turn them upside down in the soil for watering? I'm trying to work out the best way of using rainwater without having to trundle back and forth with the water can. I'm late planting seeds this year -still within time - but time just runs away. Your polytunnel looks fantastic. Do you feed your garlic as it grows? Mine is looking really healthy but I have never had good sized cloves and I really want them to do well. Take care and have a great week, =-)
@@lorrainerichardson3280 Hi Lorraine, thank you for the plant identification, I think you might just be correct. The green bottles do get filled with water or I have used my banana tea or manure water to have a slow release water or feed which is delivered near the plant root system. I use the clay spike for the same reason as you, I don’t have an irrigation system and it saves quite so many trips with the watering cans, so this is what I use. In warmer weather I do have to top the watering up generally with a watering can but the spike can keep things going in between times. Just as we are slowing down you folks across the big pond are speeding into the excitement of spring. 🌱
Garlic - I add a layer of home made compost when planting in October, then in Spring I top dress with some well rotted manure. I don’t add anything else. 🙏 I show this in the video that I did in Spring called “A Spring Awakening In The Polytunnel” 🙏
@@ahumblehighlandhome-scotla8636 Thank you =-)
Hiya Menita, what an awesome holiday you've had. I loved seeing all the scenery, some of it breathtaking which has fuelled my ambitions even more to travel. The quirky gardens were adorable and interesting. Your vlog was a much needed break for me this week as we are in the process of organising a wedding in our garden for the end of October which is our Labour Weekend. I'm sharing this with your, because Brian has nicknamed it 'the humble highland wedding' , tongue in cheek because I've talked to him often about your vlog and because its going to be a full on Scottish affair with everyone in kilts and the like. As most of the family and guests are descended from Highlanders, I guess the name is fitting :) and we are a humble lot over here, down under. Anyway, before get too carried away. Thankyou once again for a really interesting vlog. Rae x
@@livingjustright90 Hi Rae, wow a wedding in the garden, and that of Humble Highlanders too, how wonderful, what an honour but oh so much organising. When the time comes a message from Adam and I to yourself, Brian and all of your guests to raise a glass in toast of the happy couple, “Slainte” 🥃🥃 🏴 After this might be a perfect time to sit and plan your next travel adventure. We had tried to plan this one a few years ago but it wasn’t meant to be then, but was perfect for us this time. We have noted a couple of places that we want to go back to, to explore a little more. As much as it’s lovely to research places that we want to see we also like to go with the flow and see what we find. The day we went to the monastery medicinal & veggie garden , the cable car in Switzerland and the wee wander in the hills was just perfect but not planned at all. I hope to hear all about your travels one day. I’ve been having a few video techie issues this week but hopefully you can pour yourself a cuppa soon and join me in the polytunnel for the next video as we enter the frosty nights. It’s an especially busy time for you on a normal day, so please remember to pause for breath every so often. Take care 🙏 Menita
First, God bless your patience!! I'm trying to do the same in a small part of my yard and OMG! it is very challenging😳, and it takes all the energy out of me, thank you for this video is very informative, I feel relieved that it can be done , slowly but sure. God bless you! for giving me the strength to continue with this project and get it done in the future. Thank you!! 🙂
@@china7843 Hello my patient friend. 😊 Yes working with rocky ground can be very challenging and exhausting but for me it is worth it. Little by little, it can be done. I still have a few more garden beds to do, so I will be with you in spirit each step of the way. You will be rewarded. 🤗
Always amazing to go to Europe and see the history of different places. Living in NZ it is a long way but that hasn't stopped us. I am always stopping to look at the plantings and various gardens. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
@@jeanettefrancis6473 I agree the history is important to keep alive for future generations, I do find it all fascinating, everyone & every place has a story to tell. There is generally a nature & gardening based theme to most of my/our trips. I like to appreciate someone else’s designs, uses of spaces & hard work. 🤗
Great video, glad you both enjoyed your touring holiday 😊
@@mellow-3oj Thank you so much on both accounts 😊
That's one thing about living in New Zealand. It's a long way and a plane ride to go anywhere. I'm not a traveller by air by choice. Thank you for the trip, it's good to see other's ways of life. =-) Take care.
@@lorrainerichardson3280 That’s what we will have to factor in when we hopefully get to plan a trip over to New Zealand, I will be asking for some tips 🤗
What a good harvest. Everything just keeps on growing whether you are there or not. Great that the cats stayed home this time. How is your vege stand at the gate doing? Here in NZ it is Spring but not quite warm enough to plant out yet.
@@jeanettefrancis6473 Hi Jeanette, Yes that is very true, everything does carry on and keep growing, this is why we planned our trip at this time as things start to slow down a little and it over laps the autumn planting. It sounds like you are also exercising your Spring patience, as I know it is so tempting. 😊 I will look forward to hearing how things are getting on, what you are growing, your celebrations and lessons from the garden. Thank you for calling in by 🤗
Hiya Menita, so glad you had a wonderful holiday and caught up with old friends. Im abit envious of your travels, but our time is coming next year. I loved the garden tour as your garden despite your absence looks so abundant and lush even with Autumn approaching. I think at a guess the volunteer climber in your hot house is a squash, possibly butternut looking at the shape of it. The leaves dont look serrated enough to be a melon. It will be interesting to see what it turns out to be. Spring has definitely arrived here. We grow all year round using frost nets and cloche for the outdoor vege gardens. The spring brassicas here have taken off and spinach, lettuce and celery are staples in our diets at the moment. I also have spring onion , carrots, kale and brocolli still thriving in our winter beds too. Its been a cold winter here with -4 degrees celcius mornings, (unusual for our location in the Wairarapa) but everything in the gardens coped well. Our citrus we triple frost netted this year and although now abundant in fruit the colder temperatures have created thicker skins and less juicy fruit. But great for preserving :) Glad your kittens stayed put, but Im sure they would have been happy to have you home :) Take care and thanks for another interesting vlog. xx
@@livingjustright90 Hi Rae, sometimes I just feel like you are sitting at my table drinking tea with me, I do love our catch ups 🙏 Your garden pantry sounds very productive especially when fresh food on your plate in winter is such a treat. Our winters can go down to -13 to -15 C here and there are times that we don’t get any winter sun due to us being tucked in the corner of the hills. I do use some fleece and mini plastic tunnels for extra protection but there are some things that we just can’t grow. Finger crossed this year we have a few more things survive to see us through the hungry gap, it’s trying to time the planting so the plants are big enough to survive but not too big that they just freeze. Thank you for the volunteer plant ID I think it will start dying off soon so we may not see the full growth but I have taken pictures to research it a little more. You have briefly mentioned before about your travel plans, I’m so pleased you are booking a date to make these dreams happen. Take care 🤗
Yes I love Autumn too. Spring is racing ahead here and even though it's too early to plant, it's really busy preparing what veg is going where. Good to hear that you had a great trip away. Take care =-)
Hi Lorraine, It sounds like you are excising your Spring patience, it is so tempting sometimes to start to plant those seeds. I will look forward to hearing how your garden is blooming on our dark winter days here. 🤗
We used to have fresh, local milk delivered in glass bottles when I was a child. Also, until the 1990s, Stewart's stores used to see milk in glass gallon bottles which we returned for reuse. Milk tasted so much better! Thank you for this recipe! I will definitely try it.

Thank you for all your beautiful videos. They are truly calming. I make a similar tinktur, but never thought of adding ginger to it. Can't wait to try it this year, thank you for this healthy idea! Growing up in Germany there was always a "chase" in Autumn for the bushes and trees to forage from. When I moved to Ireland I was quite shocked that nobody in my country side neighbourhood even knew that these delicious and healthy berries can be used for all sorts of things. It's sad to think that knowledge that was shared for generations finally just disappears. But it brings me so much joy that you share and keep this wisdom here. Take care❤
Hi Sabine, Thank you for taking the time to write this beautiful comment, I truely appreciate it. It has surprised me that in just one or two generations that such life skills are at risk of being lost, that's partly why I started this channel as I felt that i needed to do my bit however small it maybe. I can remember foraging with my grandparents before it had a name, it's was just something that we did and then my Nan and mum would make all kinds of pantry and medicinal supplies. Its the same as all the other life skills that I am hoping are now making a bit of a come back like, growing food where possible, sewing, cooking from scratch, fixing things , shopping local, bartering, trading with neighbours and sharing precious skills and knowledges that will be lost if we don't. That's why I encourage chats in the comments, there is always some absolute nuggets of information. Thank you so much for joining us and adding your voice. Take Care 😊😊

Once you have rolled and bruised the leaves, you put them in the glass container to ferment. Then put the container in a dark and cool place. Once the leaves have gone a dark brown, there will be moisture on the inside from the fermentation, and it will be warm, it will also have a certain smell to it before I dehydrate it. 😊
Awww... This was lovely. What gorgeous wee cats❤ I'm so glad your puss returned unscathed💕
Thank you so much, yes it was so good to get him home. 🙏
What a delicate stand!! The sense of rural beauty shoes so much in your design!
@@feifei-sweetcat Thank you so much ❤️
What a charming garden you designed! 🤩🤩🤩Indeed!I One of the most impressive qualities cats possess is their resilience. your cats are lovely! 😍So much love and attention from a new subscriber!❤❤❤
@@feifei-sweetcat Awww thank you so much and a very warm welcome to our wee virtual community 🤗
Just another idea, if you are thinking of making preserves and putting them on the stand, put a call out for jars. Hopefully you will create a community of likeminded people which would be fun. =-) Lol I live too far away. =-)
@@lorrainerichardson3280 Thank you Lorraine. There a lot of hoops to jump through to sell homemade foods on a stand, I’m not quite there yet, but I will keep it as a possibility in the future. Wouldn’t it be so much fun if we were part of that community in the physical as well as the virtual lol 😊
❤Wonderful! Thank you so much!!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you for stopping by 😊
Hi there Menita, the opening photos of your flowers and garden are stunning! Actually, it was quite uplifting as its still super cold here and weve just endured two days of unexpected hail. Im sure with your drive and enthusiasm the Vege Shack will prove fruitful :) (haha no pun intended) I enjoy the fact you upcycle and recycle and the potted plants around the stand make it look so inviting. I found the thoughts you shared about your life's journey very interesting and has given me much food for thought, so thank you. Hope you and the family have a great week x
@@livingjustright90 Hi Rae, Thank you so much, I like to capture these moments in the garden as all to soon we will swop over and we will be in the midst of the cold season. I love the fact that we all have stories and hidden talents, some of which we don’t even recognise ourselves. We rarely give ourselves enough credit! I will let you know how “ fruitful” the Veggie Shack is. 😂Thankyou , as always for being here, I appreciate you. Take care 😊
Best wishes for the Veggie Shack. I used to love buying my veggies from an honesty box veggie stand when my boys were small and we were out for a walk. It's long since gone and now I grow my own produce but the memories are there =-) Take care.
Thank you Lorraine, yes this type of thing brings back a lot of memories for me too. Hopefully more & more people will establish their own gardens or get involved in community gardens as we manoeuvre through tricky times. 😊
good luck blessed be x
@@summerbreeze1955 Thank you 🙏
We also experienced a storm this morning between 8am and 9, it was quite fierce. We stay at Roy Bridge so I wonder whether your storm and ours was the same one! I really enjoy your videos, it's interesting to see what you manage to grow in comparison to what I manage to grow here.
@@barbarabond5460 I do believe we experienced the storm at the same time, it was pretty fierce. I’m delighted that you enjoy my videos, thank you 🙏 I’d be really interested to know what you can grow over in Roy Bridge if you are happy to share this information? 😊
I can grow most of the brassicas, salad leaves etc, carrots, peas, beans, potatoes sweetcorn in a good summer. In my polytunnel I grow asparagus, tomatoes, squash and pumpkins, herbs, flowers, peppers, aubergines, courgettes and have been trying melons for the last two years with limited success. However we get a lot of rain and humidity is high while the season is short so it can be challenging and this year has been poor for heat/sun. I look for varieties that crop early and grow in cooler conditions and find that these work better for me.
@@barbarabond5460Wow, that is a fab list , you definitely make the most of our short growing season 👏 I always struggle with tomatoes, cucumbers & peppers due to us being tucked away with limited sun but it doesn’t stop me trying 😊 I did try melons but there was no way it would ripen in time. Like most this year I have struggled with the wet weather, limited sun and so many slugs it hasn’t helped that I’ve had a few trips away this year so I’ve been playing catch up at times. Thank you for sharing your list, it’s so good to hear from other local folk that have the same issues as me. 😊
@@ahumblehighlandhome-scotla8636yes, ditto, it's really nice to chat to other locals and share experiences in the garden. Thankyou for the nice exchanges, it can feel a bit isolated at times there aren't many that interested in growing in a wildlife friendly way around me. Very best wishes for all your Projekts, I shall continue to watch and enjoy your videos ❤
@@barbarabond5460 Thank you for your continued support the next video will be out shortly 😊
